Hello, I'm just popping by.
A few months ago I bought some tapes just to record over etc, but found they all (10 - 12 I think) seem to have live recordings of Jethro Tull gigs on them, mostly pretty poor quality but so far a couple are listenable. Whoever had them before me removed the labels. At least 1 is pretty old, branded with the 1974 Football World Cup logo and sounds like it was recorded with a tape recorder. Others seem to be from the 80s 90s - e.g. on one tape I heard 'Budapest'. The tapes came from within Germany and I can certainly hear some German language shouting from the crowd. I think in one of them Ian mentions Milwaukee, too.
Are there recordings of all the Tull gigs of the past? Is there any demand for this sort of thing, I mean not value wise etc, but I would hate to record over something that doesn't exist elsewhere. I think I may have recorded over one already!
It would take some time to digitise them all. I'd quite like to know when and where they were (which I suppose is difficult, unless Ian happens to mention the location between tracks).

Perhaps the best to be hoped for is to determine the tour/year by the song listing on each tape and comparing it with known set lists? Once upon a time we were so desperate for live recordings that we would listen to any poor quality recording because its all we could get. Nowadays in these worldwide sharing days I think most of us who are interested have at least one good quality recording from each tour over the years. Having said that, one or all of your recordings might be a one off, the only recording in existence of a particular date, venue and performance, so historically at least they could have some value. If you can get these recordings lifted from the tapes and digitally cleaned up , they must surely be worth keeping Impressive that someone still uses tapes too!

I make up tapes and send them to my dad! He has other more modern music solutions too, but I like tapes and the fact that you can give something completely customised and personal as a quite special present these days (as long as the recipient can play them).
I have a couple of Tull albums and recognised them straight away as being Tull, but I am not familiar with every song and to work them all out (perhaps SoundHound would help there) and digitise them would take many hours. Most are 90 min tapes and one is even a 120 min. So 16 hours or so, all sides recorded from start to finish.
I will persevere though and will list track listings here when able.

Im sure if you can do even a mini track list of 6 or so consecutive songs we should get a good idea of the year. The intro and very first song is often a good clue, so it might not be as difficult to identify as it seems, though perhaps exact date and venue may be impossible.

A tape taken at random, it appears to be a mid 90s TDK, had these tracks on it in this order (I don't know if they are from the beginning of the gig):
Locomotive Breath Hunting Girl Living In The Past Fly By Night Watching me Watching you Wond'ring Aloud (a jam with Ian announcing Peter on k/b not sure if part of above) I Don't want to be a Fat Man
Crowd definitely German.

There are more tracks, those are just the first 6. The tape is 90 mins and it's full. I noticed that one or two of the tapes have cuts and short silences, so it sounds like someone had been editing and they're probably not even 1st gen amateur tape recordings and may even be mixes of live music. The vast majority are certainly live recordings, probably in their entirety. A couple are ok quality wise - i.e. listenable without it hurting your ears (for amateur tapes recorded with amateur equipment).
And there are 12 tapes in total. I've recorded (to Audacity) the first 9 so far.

I've now digitised all the tapes and have 12x .wav files containing a total of just over 16 hours of audio.
Who wants them? I'd like to send them to someone for preservation, perhaps someone who can go through them, check for any duplicates, try and work out when and where they were etc. At least I can now record over the tapes.

Well done! Is it worth putting them "in the cloud"somewhere and putting a link to them on here, ( a free onedrive account or similar) so we could download and work through them?

Yes, but making them freely available to everyone on the internet may technically be illegal, even though they are overall fairly low quality old recordings. I haven't looked yet, but perhaps there is a forum area for members only that isn't crawled by search engines or visible to all.

Speaking of which I'm amazed that a company like Amazon is openly selling "bootlegs" of Tull concerts. They may have professional looking labels and covers but we all know they are unofficial releases of Radio broadcast concerts.

Hi all, Prentice Jack, I recommend you to contact Bert Maessen, chairman of the Dutch Jethro Tull Fan Club and - more important - editor/publisher of the magazine "That's not the way Ian planned it". For decades Bert has published details about Tull bootlegs. He is a true expert and is also member of this forum. His mailadres is: dutchjethrotullfanclub@hotmail.com He might help you out here and can give you information about releasing your material without selling it. Cheers, Jan
