Good evening loyal Tull fans, of which there are many, I'm so out of the loop these days; I'm thinking about buying the aforementioned title. Is it worth the money? And are there contributions from Martin? I must say I have never quite seen IA in the same light after Martin and Doane's departure and any volume without Martin's willing participation in, would have put me off buying it. Anyway I hope everyone is well and listening to the great works of Tull on a regular basis. Kind regards to all.

Here (for what its worth) is a copy of the review I wrote on Amazon when the book came out.
"Beautifully presented, a pleasure to hold and browse, some nice photographs , and It looks great on the bookshelf.
However, the actual text is a disappointment. There is little insight or depth, few things we did not already know.
Curiously some periods are selectively glossed over or in some cases not mentioned at all ,so its far from complete.
Martin Barre chose not ( or was not asked ) to contribute, so all we get of Martin, who was such an important part of the band for so long, are quotes from old interviews which surely says a lot . Likewise with Barrie Barlow, in his time an outspoken member of the band. An undercurrent then of stories untold.
.The definitive , balanced, and unbiased Jethro Tull story is yet to be written, and sadly ,this "Official" release is not it."
My opinion hasn't changed.
All the best.

I don't own a copy so it was interesting to have your opinion on the book and, like you, I'm disappointed to hear that the publishers (or Ian) chose to skate over Martin's time with Jethro Tull which spanned 43 years. Martin was such a big part of Tull so it's sad that his contribution to the band has not played a bigger part in the book. Thanks again for the review and if anyone else has a copy I'd like to read more reviews

I was thinking of buying this book so im also disappointed There seems a lot of JT books around Is there any worthwhile ? Over the years I've bought most of the Tull books I could find ,and have yet to find any that completely hit the spot. Some are little more than a collection of press articles cobbled together, or the author either forces his/her opinion on us or weaves themselves into the narrative.Even "Minstrels in the Gallery" by the long time editor of the Tull magazine Dave Rees cant resist spoiling itself by waving the backstage pass in our faces. As discussed the "official" , "Ballad of Jethro Tull " is somewhat of a whitewash. The modest little book "Pocket essentials, Jethro Tull" by Raymond Benson is quite a pleasant little read and avoids most of the pitfalls , though its more of an introduction to the band really. One to really avoid "On track: Jethro Tull , Every album every song" by Jordan Blum. I hate this with a passion. Overblown, pretentious, egotistical , and inaccurate. There is still room for the Ultimate Jethro Tull book.

Ian, from day one, has kept strict lines between show business and backstage and behind backstage and by extension or fiat, so have most of the ex members. Tull fans have to accept this unilateral contract with Ian. Just a fact of Tull fan life and not likely to change at this late date. Partly admirable, partly frustrating.

Ian Anderson explains how surprised he was at some of the stories told by other members of @jethro Tull and how important they are to the history of the band. It's all in The Ballad of Jethro Tull, the first official oral history of the band at jethrotullbook.com

Ian Anderson Weird stuff in our hotel room… Back in the 1970s @jethro Tull were expected to stage photo shoots for magazines, some of which were weird. German publications were particularly inventive, remembers Ian.
