I read this I'm a forum years ago. But I just confirmed this myself. They made changes to the actual song in the 40th anniversary edition of Thick as a Brick.
Go to:
1:41 Thick as a Brick (Remastered)
At this point there is a heavy drum solo, with the main TAAB flute Melody played over it. At this time it plays the first portion of the melody 5 times before going into a guitar solo.
2:09 after the guitar it goes back to drums. Here they play the main "half" melody *10* more times before the guitar kicks back in and they move to the next section:
But on the 40th Anniversary version:
1:41 See there a man is born
Same starting point, but this time the half-melody is played *8* times in a row prior to the guitar solo! (Not 5!)
2:09 - same again, and there are still 10 half-melody plays, but the timing of the pauses is different!!
The whole section I think is subtlety shuffled around. That's why I focus on a quantifiable example. Please check our especially my first example and tell me I'm not crazy.
Because if I am not crazy, that is not cool! Reissues are free to remaster the sound or split track listings, but they should never change the actual *music* of the original album!
