Although Ian was born in Dunfermline, he was but a toddler when his family left and moved to Edinburgh. As the youngest of the family and with over a decade in years between himself and his two older brothers – Robin and Alastair, any details regarding his life in Dunfermline is more to do with the family background rather than any interesting exploits he may have got up to. Ian’s father – James, ran the family business - the RSA Boiler Fluid Company in East Port. Robin - the eldest of the three siblings, started at Heriot Watt university in Edinburgh; this may have been one of the reasons why the family moved to Edinburgh when Mr Anderson retired from the business however, I’m sure they must have had other reasons given the relatively short distance between both locations. The Category B Listed building that the RSA Boiler Fluid Company occupied at 15 East Port is known locally as the Prudential. Originally built in 1916 and designed with a Greek/Art Deco front, the Prudential Assurance company occupied the ground floor and the remainder of the building was let to various businesses and companies. As well as Mr Anderson’s business, The Carnegie (Dunfermline is the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie) United Kingdom Trust and The Naturalist Society were all tenants. I’m assuming ‘Naturalist’ being flora and fauna rather than nudity – it’s too cold in Fife for that kind of thing! Records show a Mr Anderson as renting rooms in 1957/60. photo to follow

I occasionally visit East End Park, the home of Dunfermline Athletic Football club. On a wall there, they have a mural of famous folk from Dunfermline. This list includes Andrew Carnegie, author Iain Banks, singer Barbara Dickson, Stuart Adamson & Richard Jobson from the Skids & Big Country, Ian Anderson and others. Here is a link to a photo of the mural. It looks much more impressive in real life.. link billwalkermsp.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/ccpage11.jpg

Very cool...I know Iain Banks, when writing under his own name as well as when publishing with a pen name, mentions Tull a few times.

Was surprised to see a few additional people who were either born or lived in Dunfermline. King Charles 1 of England was born in Dunfermline and King James VI of Scotland and 1 of England lived there. I would imagine that they did not make it on to the mural as they could not sing, play flute or were rubbish at football...

I went with my primary school in about 1965 to take a brass rubbing of Robert the Bruce's tomb. Never kept it. The library is impressive especially with a new extension. It was (naturally) the very first Andrew Carnegie donated library of which there were 2,509 built between 1883 and 1929!.

I'm heading into Dunfermline again soon and I wanted to walk up to Headwell Road to take photos however neither myself nor the library can find the actual house number that he lived in.
Anyone know?
No point in walking up there without seeing the actual house.
Aberdour Rd as well?

Thanks Jim, I know where the roads are it was the actual house number/s that I'm looking for.
Aberdour Rd looks like all new housing so maybe that house has been demolished?
Headwell - his first home looks more promising - I just need a number! I'll do a bit of snooping.
