www.antimusic.com/reviews/17/Jesse_Colin_Young_and_the_Martin_Barre_Band_Live.shtmlJesse Colin Young and the Martin Barre Band Liveby Kevin Wierzbicki Two legendary figures took to the stage at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix on Friday, Sept. 22; beloved folk rocker Jesse Colin Young and revered guitarist Martin Barre of Jethro Tull fame. The pair gave the audience plenty of chances to reminisce as they performed hits and favorites from throughout their respective careers. While Young and Barre are on a co-headlining tour, on this evening Young was the opening act. Working with a band featuring a guitarist, bass, keyboards and sax players, drummer and two female background singers, Young played acoustic guitar throughout the show and opened with one of his signature cuts, "Ridgetop." The set also included "Light Shine," which starts out mellow but ends up rocking, the introspective "Cast a Stone in the Water" and the ominous sounding "Before You Came" which featured a scorching solo from guitarist Aleif Hamdan. Young introduced the Marvin Gaye oldies "Mercy, Mercy Me" and "What's Going On" as "two songs for modern days" and also made another musical statement about current societal concerns with a take on his own "American Dream Suite: Sanctuary." Young also hopped into the way back machine for "Get Together," the hit he had with the Youngbloods in the late '60s, saving another fan favorite, "Darkness, Darkness" for the encore. Martin Barre has a fairly extensive catalog of solo albums but for this show he led the Martin Barre Band through a set that mostly featured versions of Jethro Tull songs. Barre is not a vocalist, but band member Dan Crisp handles the vocals in such a way that he sounds a little like Tull singer Ian Anderson while completely making the songs his own, resulting in a great Tull-like experience for the audience. The set included Tull favorites "Minstrel in the Gallery," "Teacher," "Fat Man" and "A Song for Jeffrey" along with lesser-known tunes like "Hunting Girl," "Steel Monkey," "Love Story" and "Sealion," on which the animated Crisp was particularly entertaining with his gesticulation. Barre was also entertaining between songs as he chatted up the audience with stories about the Queen breaking wind, writing the song "Moment of Madness" while under the influence of "a runny brie" and explaining in depth the definition of "prock." Barre picked up the mandolin for a cover of the Robert Johnson chestnut "Cross Road Blues," indicating that he couldn't play the song on guitar. Other covers included two Beatles songs; "Eleanor Rigby" and "I Want You (She's so Heavy)," both of which were performed with arrangements that echoed the classic Jethro Tull sound. When Barre and company left the stage the audience was on its feet and loudly demanding an encore; the band obliged by returning for a spirited performance of Jethro Tull favorite "Locomotive Breath."

www.thelcn.com/lcn05/martin-barre-talks-tull-new-music-amp-his-future-20171005Martin Barre talks Tull, new music & his futureBy BEN BEAGLE BEN@LIVINGSTONNEWS.COM PUBLISHED: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2017 AT 10:31 AM Martin Barre. Guitar legend, appearing Oct. 15 at The Geneseo Riviera, says solos “should be melodic ... not long-winded because no one wants to listen to that, and I don’t want to either.”Martin Barre, long-time guitarist for Jethro Tull, has played some of rock’s most recognizable guitar solos. His two-minute solo on “Aqualung,” recorded in a single take, regularly rates on greatest solo lists and is praised for its poetry, economy, emotion and the virtuosity of its creator. But it’s what he has yet to write that keeps Barre motivated going on some 50 years as a rock ‘n’ roller. “My dream is to write a piece of music that becomes iconic, a melody that will be so eternally remembered. Not something from the ‘40s or ‘50s, or Mozart or like a Justin Bieber song,” said Barre, who is scheduled to perform Oct. 15 at the Geneseo Riviera, 4 Center St., Geneseo. Leader of the band Barre is touring with his own band. And while it’s his name on the marquee, he prefers to stick to the guitar, entertain with stories and leave the vocals to Dan Crisp. “He’s capable of singing any Tull song,” Barre said. “It’s been a great thing having him. I can constantly revitalize the set. “I’m quite comfortable doing what I do now,” Barre said in a wide-ranging telephone interview from Norwalk, Conn., where the band was spending several days rehearsing with its new drummer before hitting the road for a series of East Coast dates. “At no point do I sit back and be lazy,” he said. “Some nights I like to arrange and be a band leader.” The songs may vary from night to night, but the shows typically include a number of Barre’s solo works, including songs from his most recent album, “Back to Steel”; a couple of Beatles covers, such as a bluesified “Eleanor Rigby”; and, of course, Jethro Tull selections. “Since Tull finished I’ve kind of taken on the mantel of keeping the rockier, dynamic side of Tull alive,” Barre said. “I want to make sure they’re not forgotten.” His sets include such Jethro Tull favorites as “Teacher,” “Minstrel in the Gallery” and “Locomotive Breath,” and lesser known works such as “Hunting Girl.” “The songs change a bit to make them more dynamic,” he said. Time with Jethro Tull Barre, 70, was a young axman from Birmingham, England, when he auditioned – twice – in 1968 for the scraggly band of musicians that would become progressive rock icon Jethro Tull. Barre thought he had botched the first audition, but was given a second chance when the guitarist originally offered the position severed several fingers, making it difficult to play the complex chords of Jethro Tull’s music. Barre played with Jethro Tull for 43 years until founder Ian Anderson decided to take a hiatus in 2011. Three years later, Anderson announced that Jethro Tull was done. “It was time to stop playing,” Barre said. “Because we had a huge reservoir of music to draw on, Tull, the last three or four years live, nothing changed.” The guitarist himself acknowledged he went almost five years without playing “Aqualung” – perhaps the band’s most recognizable song. When he started playing it again, he went in a little different direction than the original. “More bluesy, more guitar,” he said. Finding inspiration daily Barre learned to play guitar on his own. He didn’t want to follow the work of others who might commonly be cited as influences. Though, Barre is now as likely to find himself cited as an influence. For Barre, his influences are more likely to be guys like Count Basie, Duke Ellington and B.B. King. “They kept playing music to the end. They loved the music and were so passionate about it. It’s the same with me. I find inspiration on a daily basis,” said Barre, who likes to run daily and always has a pair of running shoes with him should he decide to venture off through a current tour stop. “Back to Steel” was inspired by one such departure when Barre saw a beautiful old Gibson jazz guitar in a shop in Nashville. He bought it and then stayed up all night playing it over and over. “It was just me in a room with the guitar doing what I do, playing,” he said. He described the guitar as a beautiful piece of wood with silver strings that reminded him of the basic ingredients of music that come from a simple instrument. “Sometimes you need to strip music bare and look at what you really, really need to do,” said Barre, who proceeded to write the song “Back to Steel,” which became the album’s title. “Back to Steel,” his sixth solo album, is two years old. He’s working on a new album and recorded eight tracks before coming stateside for this fall’s tour. He wants to get back in the recording studio and have the new CD ready next year. “Music feeds me, keeps me alive,” he said. “May I put back enough in to it that I keep music alive. I love live shows. It gets in the blood. I love to play live, love entertaining.” Secrets of solo As for those solos, Barre said he’s not one to analyze what makes a great showcase. “I just enjoy it and the minute I stop enjoying is when I go work on different aspects,” he said. Still, his “Aqualung” solo has been voted by readers of Guitar World magazine as the 25th greatest rock guitar solo of all time. It also ranked highly on lists by Guitar World and The Guitarist and is regularly cited as a favorite among guitar fans. Barre does allow that his solos are improvised and that he always starts with rock and blues. “I always try to keep in my memory that soloing should be melodic,” he said. “It should not be long-winded because no one wants to listen to that, and I don’t want to either.” A Quick Look WHAT: The Martin Barre Band, in concert. WHERE: The Geneseo Riviera, 4 Court St., Geneseo. WHEN: 8 p.m. Oct. 15. TICKETS: $35 in advance, $40 day of show. Available at b

^ What a fantastic night with Martin & the boys last night in New Hope. Our third time catching them on the Back to Steel tour, about 5 months between each time we've seen them. Nice venue as well, was a 4 hour drive for us but so well worth it.
I thought nothing could top the show they did at Daryl's House in the spring but I was wrong, they were out of their minds fantastic last evening. Set list had changed quite a bit since the last time we saw them and it was spectacular! If anything Martin's getting younger and more energized the longer this tour rolls on! We had front row last night and it was mesmerizing. "Teacher" was still the highlight for me but this time not only was Martin's guitar soaring to new heights he was running around stage, standing on amps and then, right in front of us, jumped down off the stage and ran among the crowd, and never missing a beat! When he returned to the stage he was right on top of us to finish his solo...awesome stuff. Encore of Locomotive Breath and Aqualung brought down the house.
If you haven't seen this tour, and if they are within a days drive you owe it to yourself to catch them. So far 2018 looks to to be mainly UK and the rest of Europe for them so don't miss out if you can possibly see Martin in the US right now!!

Great review lotus72d Martin is doing the right thing by changing the set list regularly IMO. It's keeping the band on their toes and certainly keeps the fans happy. I agree with you that 'Teacher' is the highlight of the show as it was for me when I saw them, and it's good to hear that Martin's keeping fit and well. Long may the Martin Barre Band keep rocking.

ADDITIONAL UK SHOW ADDED! November 7th, 2017 LINK A very special night @ Barnoldswick Music & Arts CentreI will be playing a charity gig in aid of 'Concert For the Kids' in Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre Lancashire on Tuesday November 7th. Only 70 tickets available for this very special & intimate show! In November 2013 one of my Agents Peter Barton's son Liam and his wife Sophie gave birth to little boy, Ashton. Over the first 14 months Ashton had Open Heart surgery and operation after operation. The doctors said that he will have some brain damage but Peter tells me that Ashton is happy and is smiling (Most of the time) and he gives Peter and his family a reason to live and to fight. He is not out of the woods yet, he has a long way to go and a lot more trips to the operating table, but Peter tells me he is a fighter and he will get there in the end. Over the next few years Peter Barton and Rock Artist Management/Peter Barton Management with the help of people like me are trying to raise as much money as we can in order to buy life saving equipment to save children's lives and to help them start their life on a good healthy foundation. This equipment WILL save lives...
Me along with my band are donating all the ticket sales from this concert along with a night of my life to perform for free to help raise money so that one day my efforts along with you supporting this event will hopefully give many, many children a lifetime of nights. The main setting for these events will be in the little town of Barnoldswick at the Music and Arts Centre. A very small intimate Up Close venue. We are not asking for donations, we are asking you to come and support a great cause and also have a great night out knowing that your night out will give a lot of children hopefully a lot of nights out in their future to come. Hopefully see you down in Barlick (Barnoldswick)
