Jack in the Green and Witches Promise. Be prepared........ My views are from people's comments and piccys and videos. I live for that as I can't attend concerts and I can't repeat enough how grateful and interested I am to see them here. So....the usual catch phrase "But it's only a youtube video" aside the Witches Promise has not gladden me at all. Una is not working it for me and the set up looks a bit cheaply done- the background etc. Where I'm coming from is something that we've discussed manys a time. The wonderful lyrics and imagination of Ian's songs deserve a better theatrical, reworking than this. I don't know the technical difference between a "opera" or a "musical" but has he not said it himself that he's not really putting it into any category? I would have preferred an actual fantasy-like drama for that song, onstage performed by not only musicians but actors too and not the orange/pink psychedelia screen in the background. A kind of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles onstage. I might be in the minority here and Ian may scoff but back to my original point his lyrics, songs and flute playing warrant something more in the way of a visual production.

The Birmingham show was excellent, provided that you accept it's a show rather than a concert. That one sentence sums up the appeal of the project - something different from the normal concert and one that IA can run alongside the "greatest hits" shows during the festival season next year.

Didn't buy a programme. Should've bought a programme. So used to programmes at all kinds of music events and venues being a total - and frequently comical - waste of money. Especially the ones where they tell you that the particular international star you've just come to see has indeed toured the world extensively... Who'd have thought it? Anyway, I obviously made a tactical error on this occasion not investing as the narrative line wasn't all that clear to me at times in the second half.

Review: Jethro Tull: The Rock Opera, York Barbican, September 13 Robert McKelvey / 2 hours ago IAN Anderson celebrates the life and times of the English agricultural inventor Jethro Tull with a series of concert tours across the UK. The show tells the story of Tull's life, reimagined as if in the near future and conveyed through the progressive rock music of Anderson's band, named after the same man. Anderson has lost none of his musical prowess or enthusiasm. Every song from the old catalogue – Aqualung, Locomotive Breath, Songs From The Woods – found its mark with the ecstatic crowd, drawing huge amounts of cheering and applause. However, the presentation left something to be desired. The show’s use of a pre-recording audio and video backdrop proved more of a distraction than an enhancement, populated as it was by dull, wooden performers and baffling, ill-fitting visuals The decision to transpose Tull’s life story, already vaguely represented at best, into the near future somewhat undercuts any intended celebration of his accomplishments. The connective segments were also similarly weak, lacking much clear direction. Overall, I personally would have preferred a straight Jethro Tull concert, rather than the overcomplicated and slightly jumbled affair presented. The music was absolutely stellar, but most of the Rock Opera trappings served as little more than distractions from the main event. The show would have benefited from a little more focus, but it was still quite enjoyable. My purely subjective views. The 2 video's I posted are probably the least visually effective of the whole show. I was 'cautioned' by the police but managed these.
I disagree that the 'set up looks a bit cheaply done- the background etc'. The background was a superb part of the show and was very professionally done - better than both TAAB2 and Homo Erraticus. It was visually stunning live.
I can't see a fantasy drama with actors ever happening and personally wouldn't want to. I believe he got this one absolutely spot on.
OneWhiteCritic.
PS. This is the first time I have disagreed with Ms Rabbit - please don't scold me. Xx

I think that the critic who would have preferred a 'Jethro Tull Concert' probably says more about him than the show.LITP

Went to the Sage last night and have to admit to being in agreement with the guy who reviewed the York Barbican show. The Rock Opera part of the show just did not work for me though the music was excellent as always.

It's early to judge how successful this musical presentation will be down the road. The shows in Russia will be just as complicated for those fans as well.
One thing I learned in 1973, if it doesn't make sense when you first see it... give it time. This is more than a TULL Concert. This is an experience I would want for my own happiness.

I just thought it looked that way from the video and I did try to imagine what it would look like live. I do have to disagree with you on the theatrical drama production based on a Tull album. Would you not come along and see APP at The Globe? Dammit! if I win the lottery I'll pay for it to be done. xx

Can anyone tell who the person on the left of the picture is? 10 points at stake.

I agree apart from the fact that I wouldn't mind the use of people singing along with the band used in the future, I thought it gave a new dimension to the live show and brought a much needed extra vocal support for Ian especially Unnur Birna Björnsdóttir who was amazing . The background was very well put together and the fact that the band had to keep the timing with them left me in awe. How lucky are we that we can still see a band who I still call Jethro Tull live on stage regardless of the changes in personnel. Long live Jethro Tull.

Jethro Tull - The Rock Opera Introduction and part Of Heavy Horses StormwatchUK Hello Martin. Was it solely Ian writing the dialogue and choosing the images? The bit where John comes along - I get the silent movie similarity.

The video montages were sourced, compiled and/or shot by James Anderson, but Ian would have given him a steer as to what he wanted.
As to my own contribution in disguise (cover blown by Ash!), after take 843 by this babbling over-excited idiot I said to Ian, "It would have helped if you'd shown me the script in advance." "I only wrote it half an hour ago," he replied.
To my relief, James didn't use the out-take where my false moustache succumbed to the heat of the studio lights and slowly ended up at right angles...

OW Well you done very well given the lack of prep time. I can see that Iceland plays quite a part in the opera too. I think it's a favourite for both James and Ian. False moustache? Now we really are treading on silent movie ground.

Au Contraire Monsieur Duck I'm glad you commented and gave your opinion after all, as I said you were there and I bloody wasn't. Oh what fun we'll have sitting at a concert taking notes and comparing them afterwards in the train station foyer over a polystyrene cup of coffee before we catch our trains. It'll be a blast Steve!!
