It suddenly changed. I've always wondered about this. Does anyone know? His voice was sounding really good from Heavy Horses onwards, husky and strong. Then it suddenly got deeper, softer, less range. Almost unrecognisable. The new voice sounded good on some songs, not so good on others. Did he have throat surgery or something?

I've always assumed it was the fags. Dear old Ian always points out that he never indulged in drugs which always seemed strange to me. What are ciggies if not a potent and harmful drug?

1984 Under Wraps tour & throat problems
Ian Anderson's throat problems started during the intense Under Wraps tour:
"The Under Wraps tour was one of the most electrifying live sets that Tull had ever done, (edit) ... It was an intense set, musically, and a punishing schedule which was due to finish with a tour of Australia. Tragically though the strain told on Ian's voice, as he developed serious throat problems as the tour wore on. By the time they got to Australia they tried to minimize the problem by altering the set to make it less problematic for his voice, but just five shows into the Australian tour he had to admit defeat, and the rest of the tour was canceled. (edit) ... On his return to England, Ian Anderson was ordered by doctors to rest his voice completely for a year." - David Rees - Minstrels In The Gallery a history of Jethro Tull
Under Wraps - "I think it was a great album in terms of sound, in terms of the actual song, particularly I was singing really well. The best I've ever sung was on that record. Sadly it was the singing of that material on tour in '84 that actually caused the difficulties with my larynx." - Ian Anderson

Longest River in the world answer; Something happened to Ian's voice? Personal Theory: ' Black Sunday' three tours in a row blew it out.
