Most Under-appreciated Jethro Tull Songs The Top 20 Jethro Tull Songs that Deserve More Attention Rod Little, Yahoo! Contributor Network - Aug 22, 2013 voices.yahoo.com/most-under-appreciated-jethro-tull-songs-12292605.html Jethro Tull have been rocking and serenading us for more than fifty years. With a few #1 albums and a huge library of over 300 songs, a few songs seems to have got buried under the gold. It's like a pile of gold coins with a few emeralds buried at the bottom. Plenty of Jethro Tull songs get attention: Aqualung, Thick as A Brick, Budapest, Minstrel in the Gallery, Rocks on the Road, etc. But what about those hidden gems? This is a list of some great Tull tunes that rarely get heard, are rarely played live, and almost never mentioned on forums - but are some of the nicest Jethro Tull songs. The 20 most under-appreciated Jethro Tull songs: 1 - Orion (1979) Stormwatch was the most under-appreciated album Jethro Tull ever released. Orion is an intricate song that I've never heard live, rarely see on lists, but is one of my favorites. Orion, light your lights: come guard the open spaces, from the black horizon to the pillow where I lie . 2 - Rover (1978) from Heavy Horses, which does get a lot of credit, but Rover is a track usually missed. The complex music here plays effortlessly - it's a graceful song. 3 - Dr. Bogenbroom (1972) from Living in the Past, this Tull song has some of the best lyrics on the map, along with a killer acoustic rock mesh. I have one foot in the graveyard and the other on the bus, And the passengers do trample each other in the rush. 4 - Toad in The Hole (1983) from the Ian Anderson "Walk into Light" album. 5 - Slow Marching Band (1982) magical song that wraps up side 1 of Broadsword and the Beast. Oops, I've just dated myself. What's an album side? 6 - The Flying Dutchman (1979, Stormwatch), powerful and dynamic, one of the finest Jethro Tull songs ever written, but rarely ever discussed. A ballad wrapped around a hard rock candy center. The middle riff phantasm is cosmic. 7 - Alive and Well and Living In (1970) short but sweet from Benefit 8 - Living in these Hard Times ( 1988) 20 Years Box Set, it's amazing this great song was originally cut from Heavy Horses The cow jumped over yesterday's moon, and the lock ran away with the key. You know what you like, and you like what you know, but there is no jam for tea. 9 - Silver River Turning (1993) from Nightcap, which is filled with great under-appreciated songs. 10 - Fly by Night (1983) another track from Ian's "Walk into Light" CD 11 - At Last, Forever (1995) from the CD Roots to Branches 12 - Ladies (1974) from the album Warchild 13 - Whaler's Dues (1989) - Rock Island. To be fair, I have heard this live, but it's still under-appreciated. A compelling story song. 14 - Pibroch (Cap in Hand) 1977, Songs from the Wood got plenty of attention, but this song usually gets passed by. It's one of the strongest tracks on the LP. 15 - Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow (1988) 20 Years Box: originally cut from Broadsword. 16 - Weathercock (1978) the final wrapping on Heavy Horses 17 - Mountain Men (1987) Crest of a Knave has more than just Farm on the Freeway. 18 - And Further On (1980) the "A" album usually just gets pulled for "Working John..." and "Black Sunday," but the LP's last track "And Further On" is very nice. This could have been used in the Lord of the Rings. 19 - Heat (1984) from the infamous and cursed Under Wraps CD. "Heat" rocks. 20 - Home (1979) we finish where we started, with Stormwatch, the least appreciated Tull LP. Every song on this album showcases Ian Anderson's indelible songwriting talent. Give these songs a new listen. Discover that Jethro Tull fellow all over again (He's Pink Floyd's brother, right? Or is he related to Mr. Zeppelin?).

Very much enjoyed the way that gentleman closed out this assessment. Gently clever. And I love a nice, inclusive dose of gently clever. Might take small, very small issue with his perception of a lifespan of 50 year. Geez, isn't 45 years enough. Listening to my poor bones creaking as I rise from a seated position. Unless, I guess, he is including all those years dating back to the Blades which shortly, if not yet, will indeed be touching upon 50 years.

The song "Ladies" was always a favorite of mine after seeing it performed live in 1975. I think the ending on the record was too soon. It should have continued much longer as it did with Sir Barriemore Barlow playing his 5 minute drum solo. Also, the 'Ladies' that walked across the stage were quite beautiful!

I agree with almost every song he mentions, as underappreciated, with the exceptions of "Living in these hard times' and 'Mountain men'...I could easily add 20 more equally underappreciated songs...but face it...the whole catalog is underappreciated minus about 6 cuts...and the most underappreciated is 'A Passion Play' since proper appreciation would involve making it the national anthem of every country on earth and required memorization, reciting, analyzing and frequent listening for every man, woman and child over the age of 6.

Should be taught at school. "So what did you do at school today then ?" "Oh . . . maths, geography, latin and a passion play"

They could dump Latin and double the Passion Play study time....and there are calculators for math and google for geography, for that matter.

Nice list. I especially agree with his inclusion of Alive and Well and Living In.
I'm a little surprised to see Orion in the top spot. Great song, but it seems to be commonly considered the best song on Stormwatch, which in turn seems to be a fairly well-respected album (though not as respected as SftW or HH). I'd sooner name Old Ghosts or Something's on the Move as an under-appreciated track from that record.
I think Slow Marching Band gets too much appreciation if anything, ha.
These are some tunes that I'd like to see get more appreciation:
A Time for Everything? Memory Bank part of A Passion Play Acres Wild Journeyman practically everything on A that isn't Black Sunday Watching Me Watching You Overhang Radio Free Moscow Tundra Raising Steam Heavy Water plenty of Roots to Branches songs Black Mamba

A college major in Tull....with senior year seminars on selected songs/albums/topics/eras. A cacophony of Tull songs blaring out of open dorm windows. Scholarships for promising Tull acolytes. University of Jethro Tull paraphenilia at the gift shop. Relevant graffiti on the grout between the tiles in the bathroom stalls: Jethro Tile, A Tile for Everything.

All fine with me...except: Not a big fan of Orion. (Love most of Stormwatch). Raising Steam not so hot, too. add; Black Mamba not lethal enough.

I like that list tootull...... The beauty of us being Tullheads is that the back cat is so great. I could give my 20 under-appreciated tracks that would be completely different. I could do it more than once....or twice... Ian has written some fantastic songs over the years, aren't we lucky..... Very lucky - where's my list?

Maybe there are underappreciated Tull songs, but they are not underappreciated by me. Our school offers a course on the Beatles. A course on Tull would be much more interesting. Maybe I could teach it? The Forum would be required reading and I could post everyone’s final essays for you all to read and critic.

"Tundra" would be my vote. I very rarely hear it talked about but it is a Tull song I admire. Very different and odd, and it has a lot of ear candy--except for those who can't stand any 80s synth stuff

Can't really argue with the bad score given to my Raising Steam choice, haha. I was kind of iffy on including it myself. The Z.Z. Top-ishness almost does the tune in for me, but ultimately I do find it pretty catchy. Steel Monkey is a better song in that vein though.
Perhaps I should've included Rhythm in Gold instead of Overhang.

No, you're right...you got me to upgrade stitch a teeny bit....but not that much....I heard the teeniest echo of 'stitch' riff in 'banker bets' but i still wouldn't call it underappreciated.

Previously under appreciated by you. (actually that's my concert wish list)-I should have trimmed it to your (always appreciated-LOL) standards. Bad dream thread-courtesy of WHO? YOU!
