I thought of hitting this one, but the venue is just awful and not worth the drive. It's just ridiculous how far from the band Row 1 is. There's about 15 feet of unused staged in front of the band. I will be @ Mohegan tomorrow though

Have fun Tommie can ya hear me and Hey Ray in the next coupla days...My tix say Tuesday...fair warning to Tullskull and the rest of the LA peeps: Red Rocks is about 7000 feet above sea level and the humidity this time of year is less than zero....the rox have shredded stronger throats than party leaders'! Maybe he'll throw in extra instrumentals to save something for points west...maybe he'll just play bouree and serenade over and over...aaaaaargh.

I was skeptical about the show because I did not like the 2007 show I saw at NJPac Center. I disliked it so much, in fact, that I did not go to the Hammerstein show a few nights later. But last night Tull were back. Now I see what others have been saying about the current tour. Ian's voice was shaky at first (he sometimes sounded like he was on helium), but it steadily improved as the show progressed. There were no moments that made me cringe, and he sung many of the songs extremely well, in the best voice I've heard from him in a long time. Heavy Horses was just fabulous, the entire version was played of this beautiful Tull classic. I can't say enough about how tight (and, for a change, loud) the band sounded. This was an aggressive, muscular performance by Tull. Martin was in top form, Ian's flute playing was flawless, the new boys were good and the string quartet added a lot. (I think I prefer them to a solo violinist.) And best of all, every note played last night was Tull. There were no covers and no female violinists playing their own material during a Tull show. (That has been a very disturbing trend of late.) Every time I think it's the end for Tull, they pull me back in with a great performance like this. Jeff

Great to hear the shows are doing this well this tour! I will have to sit this year out . But who knows I could get a break. Mmike

I know that feeling.
But I'm glad to hear they were good Jeff.
Maybe I'll catch them next time.

Hey, Fatman and MMike.
This is wild because I believe it was you, Fatman, who had the same experience at NJ Pac as I did. And I never thought I'd ever wanna see Tull again. And it seems we were all happy with the Jones show.
And I dug it enuf to get a tic for the next nite @ Mohegan. It was just as good! Peace.
(Really glad I went....I had no intention of going at all to this tour)

And it seems we were all happy with the Jones show. And I dug it enuf to get a tic for the next nite @ Mohegan. It was just as good! Peace. (Really glad I went....I had no intention of going at all to this tour) For me it was, "Okay, I'll go to this one show, and Tull better prove themselves to me again or else this might be the last show I ever attend." And they did. Big Time. This show could not have been more different than that horrible NJPac show. Unlike Pac, 75% of this show were songs that Ian actually sung (some in their entirety) whereas Pac was literally 75% to 80% instrumental. Ian's vocals were abominable at Pac but at Jones Beach he sang as well as I've heard him in many years. And his voice seem to grow stronger as the night went on. At Pac, Ian did a little square dance with country-violinist Ann Marie Calhoun. There was none of that $h1t at Jones Beach. There was no hot female violinist playing her own material accompanied by Tull as a backing band. There was no string quartet playing a SFTW/HH instrumental medley WITHOUT Ian, like at the Pac show. At Jones Beach there were strings, but every note that emanated from those strings belonged to a Tull song. Martin's guitar was not turned down low, it was cranked up high. There was no Christmas music. There were no cover songs of other bands. There was no Griminelli's Lament. There was only vintage, ass-kicking Tull. Tull played like a band that still has something to prove, and I loved that. I was toying with the idea of going to Mohegan Sun, but decided not to because the Jones Beach show was so satisfying, I did not need to see another show, especially not a casino show, because the few times I have seen Tull at a casino they were not very good. (Once, in A.C., the opening act was, believe it or not, a magician.) Tull did not need any magician the other night. They pulled a musical rabbit out of their own hat! Jeff

Bravo, Jeff. Couldn't agree more w/ all you eloquently wrote.
Jones was so good that I actually was trying to figure out if that was b/c I chose the perfect spot to STAND (believe or not). Altho I had a great seat I decided to stand ....do u know that area on the side, right on the water? I had to get permission from security but it was heavely: I was still close, was on a direct line with the speaker so heard Ian so much more (I always try to do that), the water, the moon, the breezes.......ahhhhhhhh!
Thanx for ur great explanation,also.

Oh.....and Jeff....BTW..ha ha. I def know what u r talking about with the casino-Tull past shows. Abominable!
But Mohegan was nothing like that, thankfully! It's a pretty big arena like a much smaller MSG and the crowd was respectful hard-core Tull fans.
Just to add to ur point: About 5(?) years ago I saw Tull @ Turning Point CASINO. Now, THAT was a very small typical Vegasy- place. All small , round tables, etc. Yech! So there was this rowdy bunch of drunks at the front who kept screaming for "Aqualung, DUDE"! or "Play Locomotive, man!"
So Ian stops the show, walks over to the drunks who were at the very front and tells them to shut up or leave.
But, at that point, I myself was so sick of Tull starting to become this f**king "lounge act" that I then said to Ian (it was a small room) and he def heard me because he then gave me this menacing , hard, cold stare. I said:
"Hey, Ian. Don't blame THEM. If you've REDUCED Tull to playing in places that are essentially large BARS (lounges), playing your oldies,..don't complain that you get rowdy drunks!"

Yes. Mostly same set-list. But did they do "We Used To Know" at Jones? Oh, wait! They DID do more songs at Mohegan (an added surprise!) b/c they played LONGER! since there was no opener (let alone a big opener like we had at Jones (Frampton). So, at Mohegan, they did a full 2 hrs! Wasn't it unusual, how long Frampton played as the opener at Jones. I think it was, like, 1hr, 20 mins or so. But, the next nite there were def MORE songs. I'll try to remember and get back.

Good for you Tommie! Don't care how long you've been in the business or how good you are -I reckon Ian and band DO pay attention to what the fans say! Wouldn't you take the occasional peep into Forums etc just to get an idea? HEY pssst Ian - it's working ;D
