I've just learnt that Michael Veith passed away recently. He was a great Tull fan from Germany and we met many times, both here in the UK and elsewhere, at Tull shows and corresponded many times in pre internet days.
Laufi wrote this on the German Forum which sums up my feelings
Rest in peace, Michael, you will have always a place in our hearts and will remain forever in memory.
Meet on the ledge
Laufi
Those of you who knew him will have their own memories of Michael but I for one will miss him.
Rest in peace my friend - I will drink a toast to you this evening.
Graham

Little did i know, when last night i drank a huge Konig-Pils @ an SF restaraunt that serves german food and beer, that I was honoring the great Michael Veith A.K.A.' pipe'...a nice guy and very, very devoted, sincere, hard-core, loyal Tull fan.....Anyone know the Mark Knofler solo song 'Rudiger', about a german rock and roll fan ?

Some great memories of Michael, this one from Mark Collins That's very sad news indeed. I haven't been in touch with Michael for a long while but have many memories of him on his regular trips here to see the band on their UK tours. He was also a regular at Cropredy and the UK Conventions and with his distinctive hat and pipe he was always easy to spot in a crowd! He stayed with us for a few days during one of his visits here and we drove down to Milton Keynes to see Tull support Marillion. It was a scorching hot day and the pies and cakes we'd brought in to sustain us had soon softened to a warm mush. Michael, being a veteran of such events, survived the entire day on a large bag of green apples and several pipefulls of tobacco! He returned the favour by providing accomodation and transport when we went to see Tull play in Germany. One memory of that visit is bombing down the fastlane of the autobahn in his small VW car (to the sound of Gerry Rafferty's excellent celtic flavoured album "North and South") whilst he casually filled his pipe using both hands! He was a true gent, a friend to all he met and a walking encyclopaedia of all things Tull - especially the band's live shows of which he had an extensive tape archive (many of the recordings made by himself!) .... and as you say he will be sadly missed. From Graham Smith Really sorry to hear about Michael. I think the last time I saw him was in Oxford for the Aqualung anniversary tour & we had a good natured chat about all things Tull - especially Tull playing cover versions I seem to remember (this was when they did Kashmir). I'd heard he was not in the best of health & having not seen him for some while was wondering how he was. From Martin Webb I knew that Michael had been very ill for a long while. His German friends had kept him supplied in hospital with Tull stuff - but I know that would have been scant compensation for his missing the live shows. Michael was ubiquitous - it was a rare event indeed to attend a JT show and for him not to be there. But he was also unobtrusive, and was never interested in going backstage, meeting the band, or whatever - the music was the important thing for him. He was also great company over a beer, chilled out, humorous, in near-perfect English, and at the end of the evening just disappearing into the night to sleep in his car, before driving off to the next gig. His presence had already been missed over the last couple of years - it will be even more keenly felt now. Safe journey, old friend. From Pete McHugh Very sad news indeed !Last time I saw him was at the Basingstoke concert in 2006. He was not well then and his pipe was non existant as he was suffering from a heavy cold. Over the years he and I exchanged many concert tapes and letters concerning all things Tull. Very knowlegable and a huge personality in more senses than one.

A true mensch...took over his father's business at some point and became a trusted and comprehensive patriarch to his own family and his employees....And yeah...like the man said above, never rabid or pesky ( like me)...just deeply happy to be in or around a Tull gig with his people. I'll miss the guy though i last saw him in about 2002.

Michael Veith - A true Tull fan - RIP.
I met Micheal several times in the late 1980's mainly in Europe and always when in Germany. There was a time when hardly any British Tull fans would consider venturing to Europe to see their heroes. Plans hatched prior to the Crest of a Knave tour in 1987 changed all that and along with the likes of Dave Rees, Dave Hall, Tim Stenton, Terry the Innocent, Frank Snowman etc etc we ventured out into the big wide world where guys like Micheal made us very welcome over the next few years. His knowledge and enthusiasm for Tull together with that trusty pipe and hat is certainly a strong memory to this day.Sad to hear that Micheal is no longer with us but no doubt in spirit he remains.
God bless you Micheal..
Patrick/Cold Flame,.

For Americans, the pioneer in Tull/Europe was Six and Violence front man-Tull fan extrodinaire Kurt Stenzel, who had a da who worked for Pan AM that allowed free internatiional flights...I met him in 1987, in Germany, seeing the Crest tour in Hamburg and we remain friends today...he lives nearby. I met Michael during the Rock island tour as he was already part of the 'New Day' crowd and pleased to meet some Californians ( me and my estranged friend Mark D.) who followed Tull around Germany...he invited us to his home near Hannover. What a great guy and his spirit will prevail among Tull fans. Tull firendships are good friendships.

Yes, he certainly made many of us very welcome to the Crest mini tour in Germany, as well as dear Dave Hall who would have "open house" for Tull fans when any of us ventured Manchester way. Great times.

I first met Michael at the Milton Keynes Garden Party, spending the day with him, Mark and Kevin Collins. A few months later I spent about a week staying with Michael in Germany. At the time he lived in a flat upstairs at his parent's house.
In later times he stayed here when the Tull tour reached Bristol, Cardiff or somewhere else nearby, and we spent time together whenever he came to Fairport's Cropredy convention.
As everyone else has said, a true gentleman, dedicated fan and collector, walking encyclopaedia - of Frank Zappa as well as Jethro Tull - a big man who leaves a big hole in the Jethro Tull world.
Meet on the ledge my friend.

I was also saddened to find out late last week that Michael had died recently. I traded Tull recordings with him in 2005 and then met him at St Albans while there for a Tull show on 10 April 2008, 4 years ago today. This evening I have uploaded Michael's recording of that show on dimeadozen.org as a sort of tribute to the great man.
Regards
Paul H.

Only found out this sad news when I read AND #103 last night. I met Michael a few times at Scottish gigs over the years and helped him out with travel directions and places to park-up etc. He was a true gentleman and excellent company. I was actually driving up to Perth on Saturday hoping to meet him again, so really shocked at this news.

Tribute to Michael V. how his passing has garnered so many comments from so many dedicated Tull fans...It's uncanny...I mean, it's a big world and Tull has so many fans but it remains impressive how many paths crossed Michael Veith....even moreso because he was not a pushy, loud, attention seeking guy, rather a true fan who found his place in Tull world.
