I think there were several different Tull recording sessions in 1981 (and possibly 1982) which resulted in Broadsword album and multiple songs that were released later on (singles, 20 Years, Nightcap and/or Broadsword bonus tracks). Some of them feature Peter Vettese while the liner notes for the other list IA playing keyboards. The same goes with Gerry Conway vs the drum machine.
My belief is that there were multiple sessions in those years, featuring different lineup and different approach:
1) "Early" sessions including only IA, MB, Dave Pegg on bass with IA programming drums and playing (rather simple) keyboard tracks, and no flute:
- I'm Your Gun
- Down At The End Of Your Road
- Too Many Too
- Jack Frost? (the drum machine is similar, but there are flutes, and Vettese is listed in liner notes on 20 Years, possibly overdubbed later)
2) Second batch of "early" sessions with Gerry Conway already present, resulting in more layered sound with flutes and acoustic instruments, but still Peter Vettese not yet there (in general).
- Mayhem Maybe (an acoustic song from a completely separate session? actually anyone could be playing drums there)
- The Curse (drum machine or not? the arrangement is simple, it could possibly be a part of first session too)
- Rhythm Of Gold (drum machine or not?, sounds similar to above, but Vettese is credited on 20 Years)
- Overhang (drum machine or not?)
- Commons Brawl
- No Step
- Lights Out
3) Sessions with Vetesse on Keyboards, probably proper Broadsword sessions:
- Jack-A-Lynn
- Motoreyes
- Crew Nights
- Drive On The Young Side Of Life
I'm judging using my own ears here and the liner notes from 20 Years and Nightcap (which can be wrong). I've listed only the non-album (Broadsword) songs assuming that the album itself has been recorded during proper "final" session. However, some of the songs could have been recorded during the earlier songs too?
I think it would be nice to put it all in order properly .
It would be also interesting know the exact dates when these sessions could have taken place? The places would be also interesting, I believe some tracks could have been recorded in Peggy's Woodworm Studios, together with his solo "Cocktail Cowboy" album.
