A SOUTH Shore business manager is out to prove the Fylde coast has a rich rock music heritage – and has created a cartoon poster prove his theory.
David Worth’s creation traces the history of local rockers from Graham Nash (originally of The Hollies and later Crosby, Stills and Nash) through to Little Boots, by way of Mot-orhead’s Lemmy, Andy Summers from The Police and Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson.
It was a labour of love for David, who only started doing caricature cartoons last April.
“The first one was published thanks to John (Johnny Rotten) Lydon,” said David. “It all started when I was messing round with a drawing programme on the computer and had a go at doing a cartoon of him. I then decided to draw the rest of the band, Public Image Limited and I sent it off to them.”
They were on a US tour but he got an e-mail from their webmaster saying John loved it. “I then drew another of the band and I was amazed when these were both put on John Lydon’s site and the Public Image Limited site,” he said.
Over the next few months, he drew more and they all appeared on the sites.
Last July he met John Lydon and his manager/minder John ‘Rambo’ Stevens at a PiL gig in Liverpool which encouraged him to do a cartoon of John from the County Life Butter commercial, which was published as a full page picture, along with his scribblings underneath, in his limited edition photographic book, Mr Rotten’s Scrapbook.
David has now done cartoons of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, The Ramones, Siouxsie Sioux, Billy Idol, Kate Bush, Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding, Manic Street Preachers, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and others.
His Blackpool composite also features Robert Smith (of The Cure), Dave Ball (Soft Cell and The Grid), Chris Lowe (Pet Shop Boys), John Robb (The Membranes and Gold blade), Little Boots and would have included The Nolans but he ran out of space – and is based on old flyers and posters for summer pier shows.
Now David, who has no artistic background other than an O-Level GCSE, is hoping to have his work displayed at Blackpool’s annual Rebellion Punk Festival.
