Here’s a Tull Tale with an unexpected ending…Maddogfagin emailed me his suggestion that it might be of some amusement on this forum; that I should post it in ‘episodes’, but before I can bring you up to date with the current and pertinent part of the tale, I’ll have to make episode 1 into a wee bit o’ background detail… Yours truly, HipflaskAndy, has adored Tull’s music since…? …I do believe I was a schoolboy! Ian’s writing and the guitar playing from both Ian and Martin were hugely instrumental in forming my own desires to write and play, to be in a band. And so it came to pass, I learned my way round a guitar, attempted to sing, to write songs and found myself, just after leaving college in 1974, with my first fledgling band. All through the ensuing decades, I’ve always been in one; Never took it too seriously, never had any illusions of going ‘pro’; Just kept the ‘band thing’ going as a very enthusiastic ‘hobby’, all the while holding down a full time ‘day-job’. There was one ‘near-miss’ when things almost got out of control in the late 70s when my ‘local’ band made a self-financed vinyl LP (just for fun, really). It was heard in a few places we didn’t expect, ending up in a few plays on his BBC radio show by the late, great John Peel, no less! A contract was waved at us, the band argued like hell about what it meant, resulting in my refusal to sign up – and the band split. I stuck with playing semi-pro in local bands then, and over the years we occasionally, by gigging, make enough to self-finance the odd CD, as much as anything, to document the material! The current band (which plays ‘folk-rock’ for want of a better term) has done quite well, making two studio recordings; mixed, mastered, glass-mastered and manufactured – none of yer CDR rubbish, y’ know! Some folk ‘stations’ (radio and webcast) have been kind enough, from time to time, to broadcast the odd track from them – bless! All of which brings us to 2010 and a Tull-Tale I will entitle…
A Tull Connection! It’s mostly in the form of ‘email dialogue exchange’ – and I’ve taken the liberty of removing any personal contact info, leaving in only the info that anyone can look for on the web. This is how the dialogue started… Vixen FM Radio Show to Duncan 19th Feb 2010

Hi TM, nice of you to drop by, although I see you really can‘t keep away and you‘ve lost your sense of humour. Still on about that hoary old “tale” eh? Oh well, each to their own I suppose.

Stick with it TM. There is a Tull-connection-making point to this, and I had no intention of, in any way, making this a ‘blog’! It’s just without ‘some’ background info, any balance to understanding the tale gets totally lost. I have no idea what has transpired on here before, pardon my ignorance. But, your point taken on board, I have removed much more of the email content that ‘would have’ followed, in order that it might be less offensive to your sensibilities. Cheers – Dunc Now back to the ‘exchange’…. EPISODE 2... So I sent her this…

Hello from Yorkshire, Anne! I'm Duncan ************* - and I received an email from Bill Horncastle of Vixen FM radio station Thanks for your interest, especially as you 'loved it immensely'! The track was a Traditional English folk song called 'Jug of This' (although it has had a considerable re-vamp from me, not least the inclusion of an original tune of mine to supply the main instrumental 'deviations' from the standard melody. The radio station has played it from our 'first' studio CD called 'Woodshed Boys' of which we are rightly proud - mostly because it stands tribute to a good friend of ours - Alistair Hulett ************************************************* ***************************************************** ***************************************************** I guess that's why Vixen FM had delved back to our first album - as Ali has just passed. But I digress. ************************************************* ***************************************************** ***************************************************** I will gladly sent you both of our CDs, if you wish. Just say so - it's no trouble. ************************************************* ***************************************************** ***************************************************** - all the very best - Duncan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Concluding episode:
So I sent her this…

WOW! I see on your 'list' - Jethro Tull!! Only my all time fave band from my youth! Some say I've picked up influences there. I DO hope so! Not bad mentors to have, indeed! What connection, exactly, have you had/have with them? They are my heroes - awesome! In fact, I have tickets to see them (in Derby) on their current UK tour All the very best – Duncan
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And got this back…
Hi Duncan, Thanks for the note. I do publicity for the band in North America. I can absolutely hear the influence in your music. You know what, send me a copy of your recent album for Ian with a note, and I'll get it to him. ***************************************************** *****************************************************. Anne Leighton, 3**0 De****ur Ave., apt. ** Bronx, NY 1***7
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I sent her an extra copy of our ‘All Rogues’ in response to her ‘send me a copy of your recent album for Ian with a note, and I'll get it to him.’ … ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And that’s where the (so far) happy Tull-tale took a turn…
Two days after posting the CD to the States for Tull’s USA publicist, Anne, to ‘put in Ian’s hand’ I bought a copy of the fine music magazine ‘R2’ (the rebranded ‘Rock n Reel’) – I specifically bought it as it featured an interview with Ian Anderson! Imagine my dismay when I read his words in that very article where he stated that he ‘hated CDs as a format’!!! That he ‘always threw them in the bin’!!! And ‘didn’t even own a CD player’!!!
It would seem then (and I slightly bend the quote)…
My words and music but a whisper, his deafness – a SHOUT!
Hope this is as amusiing to you, out there, as it was to us!
All the best - Dunc

And such is the stuff of legend Dunc. I hope that when I'm at the solo shows in September one of your tracks is being played before the performance begins.
Thanks for sharing.
