Yesterday I listened to the remastered Minstrel In The Gallery from first to last, thinking it could be Tull's most concentrated and advanced compositional accomplishment (the group arrangements all come together but are astonishingly precise and advanced). I think it's more advanced that way than Passion Play or Thich As A Brick, certainly the best thing before SFTW.
Q: can you name another album by anyone that has such advanced group composition going at full tilt like Minstrel? What peer does it have?

You might be right...the Mount Rushmore of Tull is Aqualung thru Minstrel...and Minstrel was the last...so it stands to reason that in many ways it could be the best...practice makes perfect and by the time the classic line-up recorded Minstrel they were a fine tuned machine going where no rock band had gone, before or since in terms of musicality, competence and strength...For me there is something special and even a bit stronger about the talent and balls it took to produce and release the two single track compositions, Brick and Play...no one has come close...not Tommy or The Wall or any other so called rock operas, concept albums or less glorified singe-track releases......but there is something about the altitude reached on Minstrel that may in fact leave it peerless...

well vive le difference and all that but MITG was the turn off for me after the previous devout following at the church of Tull. I can still see/hear the day I bought the album - liked the cover liked the visuals of the roving minstrel - wasn't quite understanding the "us watching you" concept but absolutely hated the medieval renaissance type music and unfortunately still do.
