Hello Friends... Has been some time and I do hope everybody is well out there in Tull Land, been a busy busy Skull here Anyway I found this question on the RUSH forum and really had no answer for it... Mara asked: "I love the song. However, the first version I heard, years 'n' years ago, was live. So when I bought the studio album I thought at first I had a defective cassette! The first verse, as many know, sounds sort of distant and tinny, from "Sun streaking cold. . ." all the way up until the tempo change at ". . .as you snatch your rattling last breath. . ." Any reason why the song was recorded this way? I love it, am used to it, but it is definitely different. "

Maybe the effect is supposed to be 'underwater'?

I agree with Steel - think it was an attempt at the underwater theme ........... unless it was one of those mad ideas like Frampton and his gizmo or Cher and her voice effect

Well by means start a Rush thread here Skully Btw, the version of Aqua on the MU album doesn't have the "telephone" effect - I think this may be the quad version. I've no doubt our expert in these things Mr Tootull will enlighten us

Yes agree definately a 'Telephone' effect ,ive noticed at some recent concerts Ian switches some gadget to get this effect in at this part great authenticity. Song for Jeffrey has a similar type of effect on the vocals.

The same effect we have been calling 'underwater' and 'telephone' is used on a verse of 'The Clasp' to imply alienation and detachment, perhaps with a tech tinge to it....it too resolves into Ian's fuller, warmer voice to illustrate a more human contrast.

He's always been good at that. ( messge from Ian - gee thanks nonrabbit) even the way he would do the grunts and chuckles to add depth to the lyrics and songs.

IF? I thought between tours, now that the fish farm has floated, en masse, to the surface, Ian IS the station master at Preston Platform. Ever notice that all the string bowing girls have gypsy eyes? seems to be some connection betwen Tull and these fancy Toy guys....
