I have to admit I used to see Tull on every tour, but in recent years what with family (Two young ones!) and other musical interests, I pop in every now and then to see how they're getting on. I didn't much enjoy Cheltenham's Aqualung show a few years back, and the acoustic tour was hit and miss.
Tonight was something different. Started gentle, then ripped into "Nothing Is Easy" and got me by the throat. This was the same old Tull that I loved in the 1990s that was missing from the last two gigs.
The sound up in the roof of Symphony Hall was damned good, and Ian's vocals were actually pretty strong on most songs - I was surprised by how strong they were, especially on "Nothing Is Easy" and "A New Day". Songs from the Woods was clearly a struggle, but the rest were fine - maybe a few places where he struggled to hit the notes.
Ian was in fine form when he put down a heckler who shouted out in between every song ("This is a symphony hall not a football terrace" he said, semi-jokingly) and got a huge round of applause... Hilarious. The heckler didn't shout out again.
I had reservations about the set-list, but came out having seen one of the most enjoyable Tull shows for some time...
I liked A Change of Horses a lot. Not sure about the princess one. I'd prefer two Tull songs to the solo Ian stuff, but Eurology was groovy.
The Symphony Hall was sold out, and the atmosphere was pretty good and the audience appreciative.
I love the current lineup - the keyboard player actually contributes a hell of a lot to the songs and the sound and the bass player seemed to be really getting into it. A tight band tonight, indeed.
The people I went with were all impressed and pleased they went...
