I was excited for weeks, and had counted down the days to the gig. Ive loved JT all my life and all of their albums and even the songs with dodgy lyrics (like I'm your pepsi cola, but you won't take me out of the can-said she was a dancer). I saw them once before, years ago during their Catfish rising tour and had been totally blown away, despite the fact they were ageing even then. I was however realistic, they are afterall getting on, but I was prepared to be forgiving because I love them so much.
However not long in, it soon became quite upsetting, and towards the end despite the encore of Locomotive Breath being probably the best performance, I was truely heartbroken. Although Ian looked fantastic, his vocals were terrible throughout. His voice was extremely weak and he sounded like he was singing with a swimming nose clip on. The millions of flute solos, were extremely self indulgent, and just went on forever, and sadly kind of all merged into one, I would describe it as onstage flute wanking. It may have been the mix, but the bass also completely dominated all the instruments. When Aqualung started I was hopefull for improvement. But then Martin completely massacred the most wonderful guitar solo in the world. It was a sad night for me, that said, I still love them for all they were. But I wouldn't see them again. I'm not saying I think they should go away, curl up and die, their spirit should live on but not by continuing to tour, and Ian should certainly stop singing.
Set list: Dun Ringill, The Water Carrier, Life Is a Long Song, Eurology, Nothing Is Easy, A New Day Yesterday, Songs From The Wood, Tea With The Princess, Fat Man, Bourée, A Change Of Horses, Bug (incl drum solo), Budapest, Aqualung, Locomotive Breath
