It has gone a wee bit quiet in TullLand soo... let's have another head scratching heart string pulling ...poll ;D No need to set it out as a poll just choose a song and "100 words" to describe it - I'll be counting You meet someone and they say I've always wanted to listen to Tull PROPERLY but just never got round to it. "Yeah I've heard Lung and Loco and LITP and Bouree! but not much else..." What song would you recommend as the next song they listen to WOW them to listen to more?... it's tricky..

Life Is A Long Song. This would be my recommendation for the next song to hear. An essential part of the Jethro Tull catalogue, from 1971, with an superb tune, lyrics to die for and a string accompaniment second to none which exemplifies one of the classic Jethro Tull sounds. No one, at the time it was recorded, was writing anything as stunning or as sophisticated as this - only Ian Anderson could write a lyric whose opening line perfectly sums up the act of waking “When you’re falling awake and you take stock of the new day”. A true classic.

Provided out theoretical listener is not handicapped by the attention span of a gnat...my first Tull taste should be their's: Thick as a Brick...a piece of music that really separates Tull from any other music of that, and any other era. In 1972, with Tommy and longer Floyd works like Meddle and numerous other album side or album long pieces of music around, listening to TAAB would not seem the stretch it is today when people are liable to click on the remote or shuffle or refresh or whatever button at hand rather than devote a hefty, 45 minute stretch of their rushed lives to a true introduction to Tull.

I think Tull's album comes from such differents ages .I agree the former opinion:Thick As A Brick would be representative. But maybe A Christmas Album touches many differents ,various and meaningful J.T moments.

Yeah agree with all of the above however I can't answer my own question... What would be a good "all rounder" to suggest to someone after the biggies! ie not too folky/rocky/80's/flutey...something with a bit of everything!

Budapest couldn't hurt. A much more "mature" Tull song - musically that is.
Teacher is good.
Back To The Family is another.

The most likely response to that would be the first two that got me, A New Day Yesterday and With You There To Help Me. I really wonder had I been born even a few years later if I would have liked/known them at all. I have liked all the records but I would need to know the person of course. I have been pleased to see people from outside Tull world be impressed by Divinities for instance, which I am impressed with only in part, but will always be impressed with the fact that he never has sold out his muse.
