The original version of the song is 6 minutes long, while the one released on CD has been cut to 3 (a wise decision, imho, although it would have been nice to have both available. Oh well, I do have a digital copy of it as well But is the 3 minute version exclusive to the re-releases or was it featured on some 7" as well? Also it's slightly off topic, but, anyone who has the "My God" LP boot (that's my source for the "17" original single version)... The mixes sound a bit different to my ears. Is it because of a different equalization or were, in fact, the original 7" mixes "Love Story", "A Christmas Song", "Sweet Dream" and "Witch's Promises" slightly different than their re-releases on "Living in The Past"?

Think you might well be right on this. I had this discussion many years ago with some Tull collectors regarding the two mixes of the Living In The Past studio recording used for the original single(s). The difference with LITP #1 and LITP #2 is the flute solo towards the end. It turned out that #1 was the original Island Record mix and #2 was the mix used on subsequent Chrysalis Record re-issues, both singles and albums. Therefore I would suggest that this probably happened with the single mixes of all the songs issued at that time, up to and including The Witch's Promise. Greg Russo's book "Flying Colours" mentions the different mixes to LITP and also Driving Song by the way, and one would suspect that the difference came about because the original releases were in mono, certainly the earlier ones were, and subsequent ones which were in stereo, depending of course what country you lived in. Interestingly, when Island Records issued the Island Story double album in the late 80's they used the original mix of the song and not the one used by Chrysalis.

Now that you made me think about it, I noticed 2 different mixes of LITP... The one on the album, and the one as a bonus track on Stand Up are slightly different (I recall the intro sounding a bit different on the percussion... hard to explain, it's quite subtle)
Btw, anyone can answer my question about "17"?

Btw, anyone can answer my question about "17"? I reckon it's only on the re-releases although I can't be 100% certain because I don't have all the original 7" singles Apart from the UK ones I think I have the German 7" issue which from memory is the long version. I'll dig it out this weekend and have a look.

Pretty sure that all the original vinyl issues of "17" were the extended version and that upon IA's insistance it was shortened when it came to remastering the song. As far as I can make out, it was titled "17" everywhere apart from Germany and South Africa where it was titled "Seventeen". Illustration of the South African issue from www.collecting-tull.com/

Thanks for the informations man Last question about "17" (I promise ), I heard that Ian really hated that song. Does he mentions it in some interview? Or maybe in the "Stand Up" remaster? (I don't have the remaster, I have the older CD without bonus cuts)

IA mentions it somewhere that he doesn't like the song but I can't remember where. Probably in one of the booklets with the box sets or in a magazine article.

Thanks for the informations man Last question about "17" (I promise ), I heard that Ian really hated that song. Does he mentions it in some interview? Or maybe in the "Stand Up" remaster? (I don't have the remaster, I have the older CD without bonus cuts) My recollection is that David Rees spoke with Ian in A New Day, likely in 88 at the time of the first box set and explained something to the extent that only half was included intentionally as he disliked the song, I second that. Although I haven't had that My God boot in about 35 years I do recall the inclusion of 17 and it being even worse than the hideous, slightly slow recording. The best part of that was Ian saying, and I still remember it, Whats this football matches at the back, eh? Football games? I see that Martin, who has better ears than me, says that they are saying sit down a little bit, squat upon the floor, make sure whoever you sit on is clean. Now uncovering on Dime and elsewhere all these choice recordings from Stockholm, Fillmore e and w, Chicago Opera House, San Bernadino, Berkeley makes me wonder where these things were 35 to 40 years ago when I would have appreciated them even more, although I am not a fan of many of Martin's guitar solos in this period, Martins tune certainly excepted. While I am a huge Martin fan I would never say improvisation is his long suit.
