Woohoo, Tull are back on the road and we have a 2009 thread!! Col, we certainly do have a Tull-on-the-road-2009 thread. What we don't have are any new songs. As of today, Tull are down to do 1 show in the UK, that's the Weyfest thing. I see from the min. of inf. web-site, the US dates are advertised as an IA solo tour. That's not really Tull is it. It's more of a Tull tribute band IMHO.

I know it sounds a bit cheesy but I'm just grateful we still have a touring Jethro Tull that plays a bloody good show! Of course if we do get a new Tull release sometime in the future I'll be jumping up and down with joy too but in the meantime I still see them as a great night of music. Alot of the set is now very familiar, maybe a bit over familiar. I wouldn't miss Brick, Aqualung, Loco breath, LITP, Bouree etc if they were dropped for a while but they do always put in a few new / old songs each tour that I haven't heard live either for ages or ever so that keeps me going along. I also think that doing only the one or maybe two shows in the UK this may not be a bad idea either. We have had regular tours here over the last few years so maybe missing them for a while wont be such a bad thing!

It's more of a Tull tribute band IMHO. During the glory days (1970-80) we had what I like to call "Big Tull." The Big Tull era ended with A, and then starting with Broadsword we had "Little Tull" (with a resurgence of Big Tull from 1987-1989), but they were still great. Since Dot-Com, we've entered the "Multi-Tull" era. Jeff

www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY-i4HYa9BYThis one to be filed under mildly interesting is the British rep, maybe consul general to Armenia speaking in glowing and highly respectful tones, including something along the lines of happiest day of his life, of some sort of fete he had arranged for Tull, apparently some sort of welcome to Armenia, and allowing lot of Armenian musicians to coalesce with the old pros. Good stuff.

blog.oneworld.am/2009/05/22/jethro-tull-in-yerevan-armenia/While this is apparently off You Tube, maybe it is only available in Europe or Armenia specifically, I found it on this guy's blog, but could not find it on You Tube. I tend to find merit and humor in pretty nearly all interviews with Ian thru the years, enjoying it nearly as much as his music. I am pretty sure I am not the only Tullie who thinks IA would have made a wonderful politician, maybe an oxymoron to some, but I don't hold them in the universal contempt that many do, and occasionally there are gold bar politicians, and I believe IA could have been one, and I took great delight in his, I think I can say friendship, with Gorbachev, a gentleman I have great fondness for, and I believe both these guys, IA and Gorby, reek common sense. Anyway I would mark this as a particularly good interview, although most with IA are, and would move me to admit something I would never say to his face, and that is I Love You. And that last line about a blind date with Armenia, I believe could only have come from the fertile mind of IA.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjKs4pYni2Y One of several very good quality videos from last nights show in a country they had never played before, I am so glad they do this, thereby performing for people who truly appreciate. Re I loved the responses on video from the South American shows in recent years, I think when the second violin player, that sweet cutiepie who's name slips my mind, was sitting in with them. Such as I have heard I notice no voice "problems", and I truly wonder what percentage of the people who have this assessment are over the age of at least 50, which I believe you have to be to have any true assessment of the effects of damned aging. As one also who collects live recordings from all the years of Tull, its not as if their "glory days" were entirely devoid of pockmarks, though they were few. But, personally, I find some of that stuff, like Martin's early ten minute solos, often quite boring and all over the map, (though I don't recall ever thinking that at the time) and some of Ian's early mid seventies singing like the end of Wind Up, that ay, ay, ay, thing no thanks, same for the live rendition and end of Back Door Angels back then, sounds, frankly, like he is full of himself, anyway, here it is, loads of em up there, from last night, the live and mighty and cultured Jethro Tull, a breathing force 35 years passed their "heyday."

Selection of the youtube videos from Armenia. Selection of the youtube videos from Armenia. Unfortunately a lot on the web are snippets and are cut off mid-song but hey, it's Tull These videos show that the new line-up is very tight and can kick some serious ass. Ian's voice is obviously shot, it lacks the beauty and power that it used to have, but oddly enough, I still like his singing, and Ian for the most part carries it off....this still sounds and feels like Tull. And his singing on Mother Goose was actually pretty good. When they play basic Tull like this, without cover versions of Queen and Led Zep, or material written by their guest female violinist of the month, or yet another performance of Griminelli/s Lament, or 80% of the show being instrumentals, that's what I want to see. 14/3/09 Uni Halle, Wuppertal, Germany Dharma drum solo (I like the Doane backdrop!) Heavy Horses Fires At Midnight Tull backing Soari Jo (Don't know the song!) I have to say, Tull are sounding great this year. Ian seems to be choosing songs that are more suited for his voice, like Fires at Midnight (which he sings very nicely here), Heavy Horses and Beggars Farm. I wish they would continue in this vein, i.e. basic Tull (with a new album of course), but it seems that the latter half of the year will be solo Ian and/or multi-Tull and/or Chirstmas Tull, with no new studio album once again.
