Congratulations Celtic'm sad today ... but Barça is still top of the group, I wish pass the two Tull and the beautiful game seem to go hand in hand. I know Dave Rees follows West Ham, Old Webby supports Spurs (why?) and this old dog is a Crystal Palace fan - saw my first game at Selhurst Park in 1959 and my loyalties haven't wavered since then. Hell, it's been a ride. Not sure about Tull band member's teams. IA supporting Dunfermline or Oxford United ?

Barça win to Spartak in Moscow and qualified for knockout Goals: Alves and Messi (2) Messi has now 75, so it is only 5 record of Gerd Müller, who scored 80 in a year Some russian fan around here? ;D

Thanks for the post Graham, but as I am a big hooligan Barça I'm going to do a little history about this Real Madrid... In Spain everyone knows that Real Madrid won their fame thanks to the help of the military regime of General Franco. For any Spanish that is not Madrid, Is known that titles earned between the years 1936-1975 are unfair, because Madrid was used as an advertising of the regime to give a good image abroad. In Spain was used the R.Madrid and the Sun as advertising, when in fact it was a third world country without freedom. The FC Barcelona was the opposite, the club was hurt by the regime because Catalonia is the oldest democracy in Europe, and also spent years fighting for independence. During the Civil War, Catalonia was on the Republican side, and Madrid was held by the fascists, unfortunately fascists won, and history is written by the victors... One example is that many referees, have acknowledged that they were obliged to favor Madrid, also the signing of Di Stefano was a ministerial order, FC Barcelona signed him before, but a ministerial order forced him to play for Madrid. The last case was that of Johan Cruiff, was delayed six months without being able to play for Barcelona because work permits are "lost" despite that, Barcelona won this league (1973-74). I would sum it up well, Madrid is the Spanish political right wing team, the Barcelona team is the democracy and freedom. Although now (with democracy) things have changed ;D

I would sum it up well, Madrid is the Spanish political right wing team, the Barcelona team is the democracy and freedom. Although now (with democracy) things have changed ;D Rather similar in some respects to the political divide that involves Rangers and Celtic in Scotland. In England it's more a case of local rivalry such as at the Spurs and Arsenal matches and the two Manchester clubs. Crystal Palace (who everybody knows are the best team in the known universe ) don't like anybody so the rivalry between Palace and teams such as Brighton, Millwall, West Ham and Charlton are stuff that legends are made of. As for Real Madrid, it was still a great thrill to see them play back in '62 - especially against Palace who were not in the top division at the time. The political side of the game as you've posted above was unkown to me and, I expect, many others and hopefully things have changed over the subsequent years. Friendly rivalry amongst football fans is one thing - using the beautiful game for political ends is another.

I agree with your comments Graham, but in Spain it still endures, though increasingly less

I hear there's a job going in Cornwall. From The Devon and Cornwall Sun: Martin O'Neill joins Sunshine Desserts. "I didn't know I'd like custard so much"Martin O'Neill, ex Sunderland manager, will be joining Sunshine Desserts in Cornwall as a custard tart and apple crumble operator. Martin, an acknowledged Jethro Tull fan, replaces another Tull fan who left the company after nine years and is now working for the government. "I hope he does well at his new job and I wish him all the very best in his new employment" said Graham M. "and I hope he gets to grips with all the paperwork and the long hours". Graham, 165, is off to the Post Office to complain about the cost of stamps.

Here in California, where evolution has lead to sports where use of hands IS allowed, The local basketball team, The Golden State Warriors...are marching toward a championship and finishing one of the best years ever by a team in the league...equal to the Michael Jordan years in Chicago.
