I was there at a number of those early Marquee gigs. I have a letter somewhere from Ian correcting my spelling of Marquee. Funny what sticks in your mind. I thought the gigs were with The John Evans Blues Band mostly. John G ran the Marquee if I remember correctly. He was mentioned more by Ian than any of the bands that played. I also don’t remember a single other band. I remember too a particular performance at the Marquee from Ian which I thought was spectacular. Afterwards I found it surprising how little he realised how good he was. Quite self critical. I also remember talking with Ian one time when the performance was over and a young man came up and stood right in front of me to tell Ian how brilliant he was. It was the first time I witnessed the sign of things to come. Most people had been shy up until then. I can’t imagine why these rather irrelevant memories stick with me.

Yes yes that’s the memory. It’s like going back in time. She smiles affectionately. I love that look of Ian as he was back then. Of course Mick Abrahams looking great too. That gig must have occurred before the gig at The London School of Economics. I remember being there too. It took place shortly before Mick left the band.
Never seen those photos before but I remember well. I wonder who took the photos. I wonder if they were taken at one of the marquee gigs I attended with Ian. If I hunted out his letter that made reference to our meeting outside the Marquee entrance, so that he could get me in as a freebie I presume, I could probably date at least that particular gig. I won’t go letter hunting however. Despite being a keen photographer I regret not recording so much that I could have done in those early years. Just one grainy solitary photo I took of Ian outside my house and a picture of Jeff and me with my humped back teddy bear. All the other rather lovely photos I have, Ian gave to me himself. Is the last photo of John G ? Introducing the band? Great stuff !

I would have only been 13 years old in 1968.........but that was about the time I was hearing the kind of music that affected me then......it would have been awesome to see that young band then
