It always seemed a bit strange to me that Tull were not recorded by request of the japanese record label in the 70's. Many bands recorded shows over there like Deep Purple (from mwhich Made in Japan was made), Led Zeppelin (whose multitrack recordings have always considered of inferior quality by Page), Queen etc. I know that if Tull had been recorded in Japan in 1972 or 1974, at least something should have leaked or released by now. Curiously, Tull played Japan very shortly before Deep Purple in 1972. Anyway, I wonder if any rumours of Japan tapes have ever existed in the case of JT.

I was always surprised at the lack of official live releases by Tull throughout the 70s. Until "Bursting Out" we had nothing at all (if you don't count the rather boring drum /piano solos on "living in the past") My Tull fever was at its height during the mid seventies , I and others were crying out for a live souvenir of the incredible shows we saw, and all we had were bootlegs (usually of poor sound quality). The record companies always made a big deal about how the bootleggers were stealing from Tull (and other bands) and yet an official live album from each tour would have sold by the bucket load and made bootlegs redundant.

Haven't any knowledge about a recording but that is not to say one doesn't exist as it seems a bit strange that some enterprising Japanese radio station didn't produce a legit recording. Maybe one is lodged somewhere in the Tull archive gathering dust ?

The so called "official sources" certainly missed out which allowed the evil/naughty bootleggers a free hand and the shows in '72 and '74 are widely available if you know where to look. Artwork for a couple of them from '72 are below and more examples are out there as well.

Yeah thanks MAddog, I have known about the japanese bootlegs, but anyway my curiosity concerned possible multitracked shows. It seems that nothing was done for the all important 1971-1975 period. I am left with the question of what had been if the 50 for 50 compilation had included the disc of live material that IAn mentioned was in the plans.
