Cheerio 1:07 Following the end of the Stormwatch tour in early 1980, Jethro Tull would undergo its largest line-up shuffle to date, resulting in Barriemore Barlow, John Evan and Dee Palmer all leaving the band. Jethro Tull was left with Anderson (the only original member), Martin Barre and Dave Pegg. • Tull's first album of the 1980s was intended to be an Ian Anderson solo album. Anderson retained Barre on electric guitar and Pegg on bass, while adding Mark Craney on drums, and special guest keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson (ex–Roxy Music). Highlighted by the prominent use of synthesisers, it contrasted sharply with the established "Tull sound". After pressure from Chrysalis Records, Anderson agreed to release it as a Jethro Tull album. Entitled A (taken from the labels on the master tapes for his scrapped solo record, marked simply "A"), it was released in mid-1980. • Jobson and Craney returned to their own work following the A tour and Jethro Tull entered a period of revolving drummers: Gerry Conway, who left after deciding he could not be the one to replace Barlow, Phil Collins (as a fill-in for the recently departed Gerry Conway, played with the band at the first Prince's Trust concert in 1982), Paul Burgess (for the US leg of the Broadsword and the Beast tour) and permanent drummer Doane Perry. • 1981 was the first year in their career that the band did not release an album; however, some recording sessions took place In 1982, Peter-John Vettese joined on keyboards, and the band returned to a somewhat folkier sound - albeit with synthesisers - for 1982's The Broadsword and the Beast. The ensuing concert tour for the album was well attended and the shows featured what was to be one of the group's last indulgences in full-dress theatricality. The stage was built to resemble a Viking longship and the band performed in faux-medieval regalia. Among Jethro Tull’s very finest shows on this tour was their concert at the Stadthalle, Freiburg, Germany, on 30th April 1982, a performance also recorded for live FM radio broadcast. • Previously unreleased, this superb show is now available in its entirety on this new CD, allowing fans a chance to hear a quite dazzling gig from Jethro Tull from almost 40 years ago

Thanks for info ,will be buying this cd,looks like a great setlist. The Swirling Pit ,ha ha ,what a title!!,cant say ive heard that one. It's been unofficially released as a bootleg a few times, the most recent I believe is this one: I can't comment on the quality but by all means report back if you do get a copy and let us know what it's like. Of interest, the following is a Tull boot being issued shortly with a great "steampunk" cover

Its pretty much what I expected, suspecting it to be another unofficial release that seems to be swamping Amazon at the moment. Negatives . ...Cheap thin paper sleeve, poor print, sleeve notes that ramble (the "A" album bizarrely takes up much of the narrative). Worst of all for those of us who care about these things, the inner sleeve and back cover are from a different band era altogether (74/75) which I always hate. Positives. Sound quality is generally good, there is too much reverb and echo in places, but I remember that from my cassette of the original broadcast and for a stereo radio show it wasn't the very best to start with so to be fair this is no worse . At least this one doesn't mix and match concerts from various years and call it something else . Its worth having for those who need a "Broadsword" show for the collection ,but as a package we have better put together b******s than this.

Many thanks for the review adospencer - I might just get a copy for my archive. Shame about the poor quality sleeve, images and sleeve notes though

I must agree with you and I'm sure that TullCentral will have a copy as a reference. It would have made a good legit release or, saints preserve us, a release via the website as some musical combos have done.

I am guessing this boot was put out now to cash in now, before it becomes obsolete

At least this 1982 recording is taken from the same concert. I have a bootleg supposedly from this tour ("Clasping the weathercock at midnight") which although better sound quality (less echo) is rather spoiled (for those us us who care about these things), by having some live tracks from the "A" tour mixed in with it. Apart from anything else it leads to inaccurate listings of the songs performed on a given night. As bad as the "Hard times" sleeve is (rambling irrelevant text, wrong era band photo) at least the Anderson Martin Barre joke during the band intros isn't picked up here. I have seen credits for recordings of this tour that list "17 year old Alexander Lancelot Barre" as a real member of the band!

I have seen credits for recordings of this tour that list "17 year old Alexander Lancelot Barre" as a real member of the band! From the Ministry of Information 8/4/82 Congress Centrum Hamburg, Saal 1 Hamburg, Germany Not the Clasping The Weathercock At Midnight bootleg, which was taken from a KBFH recording misattributed as being of this show. It wasn't (this has now also been confirmed by an audience member). The Beasties boot is definitely from the same source recording, which suggests Clasping... is from the 28-30/04/82 shows. The following is the correct 8/4/82 setlist, not that of the bootleg. The KBFH recording contributed a track (Seal Driver) to the '25th Anniversary' box set and five to the '20 Years' box set; the latter's booklet claims the show also contributed 'Fallen on Hard Times' to that release, but there's no record of it having been played here! Intro, Clasp, Hunting Girl, Pussy Willow, Broadsword, Jack-In-The-Green, One Brown Mouse, Seal Driver, Heavy Horses, Weathercock/Fire At Midnight/Keyboard w.Drums/Sweet Dream, Flying Colours, Songs From The Wood, Watching Me Watching You, The Swirling Pit, Pibroch/Black Satin Dancer (inst.), Beastie, Too Old To Rock'N'Roll..., Aqualung, Minstrel In The Gallery, Locomotive Breath/Black Sunday (inst.), Cheerio
