Jethro Tull, ode to progressive rock By Metaljournal on October 23, 2022 LINK JETHRO TULL Euskalduna, Bilbao October 22, 2022Jethro Tull arrived yesterday at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao to perform an ode to progressive rock, although the free spirit of the band has displayed many styles over more than half a century of history. To progressive rock they have added pop, folk, electronic music, hard rock... Andagainst all odds they even won Metallica the Grammy for 'Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance' in 1989. The paths of Jethro Tull have been varied and have always had the guidance of Ian Anderson, undoubtedly one of the great living legends of rock.
To access the Euskalduna Palace there was an unexpected obstacle for those who came from outside the town. Yesterday the 'Bilbao Night Marathon' was held, which meant streets and highways turned into rivers of runners that practically paralyzed much of the center of the Biscayan capital. Some even had to risk crossing on the run and dodging 'runners'.
Before the concert began, a representative of the Palacio Euskalduna requested, at the request of Ian Anderson, that the public not take photos or record videos during the performance, so as not to disturb the artists when they performed their complex music or other spectators. Curiously, photos and videos were allowed in the final ten minutes of the encores.
A huge screen projected the motto 'The Prog Years' when a projection began in recognition of the style and naming many of its most distinguished representatives: Yes , Rush , ELP , Pink Floyd , Marillion , Van der Graaf Generator ... and of course Jethro Tulle . The band came out to the sound of For A Thousand Mothers , from their second album ( Stand Up , 1969) to immediately recreate other songs from the sixties, which appeared on the compilation Living In The Past : Love Story and Living In The Past .. That last one defined as progressive pop by Anderson himself.
All eyes were on the emcee, Ian Anderson. Obviously, at 75 years old, his voice is not the same as that of yesteryear, but his form is better than expected. Especially when in 2020 he confessed that he had been fighting COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) for a few years. During much of the performance he moved decisively and did not stop performing the classic posture of him playing the flute with one leg raised and also with his arm extended.
The Jethro Tull concert had video images that weaved the narration of the songs. Hard rock rose with Hunt By Numbers , a song from the late nineties. Instrumentally the band sounded compact to perfection. In fact, some of the musicians have shared the solo group with Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull . The biggest surprise was the fine arrangement of young guitarist Joe Parrish, who teamed up phenomenally with keyboardist and bandleader John O'Hara.
Anderson joked that in the 1960s and 1970s drummers would do solos for hours, days, and even weeks, a practice that according to him no longer exists. On the instrumental Dharma For One drummer Scott Hammond had his chance to shine. In addition to Hammond, the rhythm was also marked by David Goodier with his powerful bass. Those from Blackpool looked back to 1982 with the album The Broadsword And The Beast to interpret Clasp , the frontman 's favorite theme as far as that album is concerned. Talk about the "greetings you don't need ," Anderson introduced, going so far as to mention Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
Jethro Tull has released his new studio album, The Zealot Gene , in 2022, his first in nineteen years. They chose Mine Is The Mountain as the first of the new songs, whose lyrics talk about God's being fed up with receiving so many requests and petitions from people. In Black Sunday the guitarist Joe Parrish was added to the second voice with Anderson.
They closed the first part of the concert with Bourée , a recreation of the Bourrée in E Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach , “the best composer” , in the words of Ian Anderson who gave a master class during the concert on how to integrate the sound of the flute. in the universe of rock.
After a quarter of an hour of rest, the band returned to the scene in the second part of the performance with Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll , Too Young To Die and The Zealot Gene , the homonymous song from their latest album. Another of the great moments of the concert came with Pavane , inspired by a piece by the composer Gabriel Fauré in which Anderson even recognized flamenco influences. The third and last new song played last night was Mrs. Tibbets with an unfortunately topical background: the atomic bomb. The choirs dominated in Song From The Wood , a step prior to one of the most anticipated moments: the quintessential Jethro Tull classic ; Aqualung, with an intense instrumental phase.
They announced on the screen that photos could already be taken at the beginning of the encores, which started with Locomotive Breath , another of the band's great emblems in which they once again showed off their great musical tune. They closed with The Dambusters March showing numerous flags on the screens, which converged on joined hands with a Ukrainian flag in the background. The farewell was also striking, introducing each musician with his name and photograph.
In total two hours of a great musical show with the break included in which Jethro Tull with Ian Anderson at the head left evidence of the class of one of the great rock bands. The absence of guitarist Martin Barre in this last stage of the band and the choice of musicians who had already accompanied Anderson alone raised doubts in some of his followers when they returned to the fray in 2017. Doubts that Ian Anderson dispels in each performance .
