I am not one of the Paul McCartney "haters" and I think his new album is really very good. But I was at a party the other night and that "Wonderful Christmas" song of his was playing on the radio and a friend said "God, I hate that song! Is that not just the worst Christmas song ever?" And oh yes, I agree completely! That song will send me leaping for the dial to change it. They play it endlessly, they put it on every Christmas compilation album, and who actually likes it? It's like somebody said to him, "Paul, we need a Christmas song in, say, ten minutes? Can you do that?" "Sure, okay, no problem, get right on it"
It reminded me of a story I read about a year ago that said that kids don't like clowns - everybody thinks they do, and kids know they're supposed to, so they don't say anything, but actually, as a rule, kids don't like clowns at all and in fact often find them quite disturbing. But, everybody keeps exposing kids to clowns because they think they like them, and the kids probably all think there's something wrong with them that they're the one kid in the world who hates clowns. Maybe that's why this "Wonderful Christmas" song is everywhere, because those who decide what songs to use think they just can't go wrong with Paul McCartney, even though they probably hate it themselves. So what do you think?
Is this possible? What holiday songs do you hate, or if you prefer to be more positive than I am today, which ones do you love? Do you like clowns?

^ I couldn't agree with you more regarding that wretched McCartney song....It's as if it was designed by some (particularly cruel) military psy-ops division to send us all completely insane. It's awful... Maddening! Every time i hear it drills straight into the pain receptors in my brain, remaining there until some other song eventually manages to drive it out (Oh, and we aren't alone.....A quick Google search reveals that Sir Paul's godawful contribution to holiday music makes a lot of people's 'Worst of' lists). Though it has no real competition for the top of the Tremendously Annoying Christmas Songs list, i would have to say that 'Little Drummer Boy' and '12 Days of Christmas' are close on it's heels... based on their repetitive nature, if nothing else. Clowns are creepy. A good friend of mine is an outright clownophobe ( <-- Okay, maybe that isn't a word...)....Can't even see a picture of a clown without getting the heebee jeebies As to your theory....That has to be it. To believe otherwise suggests that there are large numbers of people that actually like this song....and i just refuse to believe that's true. War....famine....disease......i can face 'em.....but this? No.....i refuse....it simply cannot be........

Then there is Elton John's "Step Into Christmas," which is almost as bad. And I say that as a huge fan of pre-80s Elton. Seems to me that some of these folks for who have a facile talent for melody (in my opinion anyway) get a bit lazy sometimes and maybe think we won't notice!
"Just put a little jingle sound in it, it'll do!"
And I haven't yet found anybody who likes clowns. Some make an exception for a particular clown, but clowns in general, no takers, so far.

I have to join the "clowns creep me out" club as well.
And "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has a very high ick factor for me...no matter who sings it.....

Clowns are creepy, I get the jitters just thinking about them. Worst Christmas songs have already been mentioned, I agree bluehare/rebecca/cbwaltzer, you got it dead right - yeeuch to all of them. 2 best Christmas songs ever: (1) Stop the Cavalry - Jona Lewie

I think I like best the good times, non-preachy ones (that sound good to me, that is) and the sincere religious celebratory (as opposed to preachy) ones. This is one I love, in fact, I have never heard a bad version of it -

^ Like both of those "(1) Stop the Cavalry - Jona Lewie (2) Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon" Def agree w/ the Lennon choice - but i've never heard number 1, i'll have to check it out. Always loved 'Fairytale of New York' as well (though i have trouble enjoying any live/recent versions w/out Kirsty MacColl)....Might not be considered an actual 'Christmas Song', but still......
