I did a quickie search on the forums only not to find a thread dedicated to the ladies who rock out with the boys (sometimes even better than the boys . Shall we carry on ?? Ever since I started moving 'away' from the males in rock, I've been into Wanda Jackson, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Suzi Quatro, Helen Reddy, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, Beth Hart and so on down the line; then there are the all-female rock bands I like such as: Fanny, The Pleasure Seekers, Runaways, Girlschool, Crucified Barbaras, Cockpit, L7, Tits of Death etc.

For me, Patti Smith ranks as one of the all time greats....she has the magic of Dylan, Lou Reed, Keith Richard and who know how many other sincerely digested and respected influences....oh yeah, don't forget Allen Ginsberg. Her books are brilliant, too: Just kids, M Train and Year of the Monkey are transporting reads.

Ty for the heads up on this

I do like the "what's yer favourite..." Threads
Maggie Bell
Dolores O'Riordan
PJ Harvey Ann Wilson Grace Slick
Speaking of labels, "Ladies" in Rock - bit olde worlde and dare I say condescending - in a nice way:)( double sarcasm) Couldn't see 'Gentlemen Guitar Players in Rock' as a heading.
I'm old enough (unfortunately) to remember the 70's and the attitude towards women in music and in particular rock music. Folk music was okay - women were allowed - goes back to tradition but rock was firmly a man's world.
Sexism was used as a marketing tool for Suzy Quatro. What, a woman rock singer AND she play's guitar?!
I worked in a Virgin record store in Glasgow in '72. It was clear from the start that I was there not to be behind the counter advising and selling the music but to sit in the corner selling beads and patchouli oil. In my place. That wasn't a revelation, I spent my time in flats listening to music and knowing that to really understand rock music you had to be male... and have a wall of albums, all plastic wrapped and in alphabetical order...to really appreciate and understand the guitar licks, the chord changes etc etc
We've moved on.

I like to think about women in rock as "ladies", because that's what they are......don't get me wrong, I LOVE WOMEN in general, but I do not fall into the trap of considering sex as a tool for women to get into rock and be appreciated. If women are sexy AND talented (90% of all women in rock !!!!!), why not accept a LADY who sings, plays guitar and is SEXY to boot ? Olde world are men who still behave as male chauvinists when talking about the world of rock.

"Ladies" as a Thread title sends out the wrong message for the Forum. Women in Rock - more appropriate. eige.europa.eu/publications/gender-sensitive-communication/challenges/subordination-and-trivialisation/patronising-language

I disagree.....but whatever, you can change the title of the thread....makes no difference to me....because I didn't confuse 'sexy' with anything....I stick to the etymology of the word.

Suze de Marchi of Baby Animals, one of Australia's coolest rock bands.... Excellent band indeed !!! LINK Baby Animals spent the second half of 1993 touring the USA, including a lengthy support slot with Robert Plant and returned to Australia in 1994 for their ‘God Shave the Queen’ tour.
In August 1994 DeMarchi married Nuno Bettencourt from American band Extreme and moved to Boston, Massachusetts. The couple separated in 2009 and divorced in 2013.
Baby Animals officially disbanded in 1996.

^^^^ YES, UNFORTUNATELY THE BAND split up too soon for my reckoning. I saw Suze and the band live for the last time at Towradgi Beach Hotel quite near where I live in NSW Australia and they kicked a mighty ass that nite. I talked to Suze and the mates backstage for nearly 3 hrs non stop and I learned so many things about on the road and rock music that were unknown to me....and I'm a veteran rocker at heart
