Flying Dutchman or Dark Ages?
Flying Dutchman's chorus has a great hook, one of my earliest favorite parts of Stormwatch. But Dark Ages has such great instrumental sections. The heavy, palm-muted passages are pretty unusual for Tull, and the instruments sound really good, especially the lead guitar.
So it's Dark Ages for me, though both tunes are good. What about for you?

Flying Dutchman is a good song. Dark Ages is an earth shattering, highest rank, mind blowing Tull masterpiece.

Dark Ages is an earth shattering, highest rank, mind blowing Tull masterpiece. It sounds like it's shattering the Earth at times, when Ian's vocals are echoing or those low, heavy riffs are chugging along. Really good stuff.

Dark ages - one of my favourite Tull songs. Read somewhere where IA said singing this song contributed to his vocal problems.

Dark Ages is a bit too....blustery, dare I say. It's fast and a bit furious and it never really grew on me - yet - there's still time.
I do like the lyrics on the first line though -"Darlings are you ready for the long winter's fall?" and then they get a bit predictable.
Whereas...Flying Dutchman is a beautiful masterpiece both in music and lyrics - all the way!

I didn't enjoy Dark Ages immediately myself, and I think there are a number of songs on Stormwatch that have more going for them in the way of vocal melodies. Strong album.

A close call from the original album. But the early version of DA wins hands down.

I was thinking the same, that's why is difficult to compare. Each of them is good in its way.

I remember seeing Tull play Dark Ages live in April 1979. I felt the song went on way too long, and I never really warmed up to it. In fact, that was the concert where I thought my favorite band (that I had seen on 7 previous tours)was struggling and losing the magic. I FAR prefer the earlier version that appears on the Songs From the Wood box set.
