I tried to hear Van the Man's Moondance on utube and apparently he has taken it off there.
I know Prince did the same thing too with some/all of his songs.
Does anyone have an answer/theory to this?

Actually, I do, sort of.
There is an organization called "Web Sherrif" that was hired by Mr. Morrison to round up all errant mentions of him on the internet. It has been pretty ugly, with major fan sites being shut down - sites which have helped spread the word and given him the best kind of free publicity. Imagine the whole Tull Ring being shut down - that's pretty much what we're talking about. Why? Who knows. My guess is that he really doesn't know much about the internet and doesn't have the savvy to distinguish between those whose interest helps publicize and support him, and those who want to rip him off. There has even been talk that he's going to go after the fan email lists (which is where I found all this out), but that hasn't happened yet. The YouTube videos being yanked is a part of that. For a short time, on his official site (quite inferior to at least two of the longstanding fan sites) there was a "wall of videos" which had officially sanctioned clips from recent shows, but now his site is gone too. Part of THAT might be the fact that he's just started his own label and it might be a business-type thing. So...hope that helps.

Yeah...a lot of artists...or their record companies and lawyers, seem to randomly yank stuff off you tube...Prince put his foot down some time ago. The irony of artisits who spend the first part of their careers begging for exposure of any sort then turning around, when they are rich, and squashing harmless stuff liked shared videos on You Tube, is appaling.

right on, rebecca. ------------------- Might find the answers in the link below, nonrabbit ---------------- There are a (relatively) small group of artists that have made it clear that they dont want their music shared - some are rather specific about the circumstances/sources of the files they object to, some more arbitrary. Dime a Dozen is a large music sharing/audiophile site that is one of the net leaders in terms of keeping an updated list of these artists. While Dime is membership only, Tapecity maintains the same policies as Dime regarding the artists in question, as well as publishing a publicly viewable copy of the Dick List (otherwise known as the 'Artists/Bands/Venues Not Allowed List' ). You can check out the details here: Tape City / Dime Do Not Trade ListThankfully, Tull [et al] have always been cool about the trading of live shows, bless 'em.

Thanks all Agree with all said - it's madness to deny people the chance to hear songs on utube. Mind you Van Morrison has always been an individual in the muso business so I suppose it's part of his "Mystic..que".sorry

Partly I think the thing is that these folks really might not understand what music on the internet is all about - clearly, a lot of what's being done in their name is not actually in their best interest. At least I want to give them credit for not understanding it.
As for music sharing, the irony is that all the active fan lists trade quite openly and are always putting music files up and everything. There is even a YahooGroups list called "Vantrades!" The links to most of these lists was at one of the fan sites that was shut down, so if Web Sherriff was truly on the ball, he'd have pursued all that - I mean, if they wanted to really stop illegal activity! So who knows what the heck the real story is.

The whole youtube aspect is soon to get worse I'm afraid... Last week as I was preparing for the online premier of that Rush Fan video I produced, I learned that youtube updated their recognition software and as soon as I uploaded my video, it rejected it. It recognized the song (la villa strangiato) and immediately denied the video. Human eyes ever even saw it. Now, since my project is called "the Rush Fan Film Project", you can imagine that most of my original videos make use of Rush music in the background. a couple have actually been pulled, but most of them remain for now. Can't get any more posted though. Any song in their restricted copyright listing is instantly shot down. Luckily I did end up finding a way to get it hosted without using my own server space, but visibilty will obviously be lower directing people to my site rather that youtube. - and for anybody interested, here's my shameless plug to my site with the aforementioned video rushfanfilm.com/videos.html

By the way, somebody posted an article to my Van list about the man who is Mr. Websherrif - turns out he's the guy behind Prince's stinginess also, so that explains a certain common behavior, doesn't it? I'm too lazy right now to look up the link.

Prince was, from my completely unscientific experience as a you tube user..the very first to suddenly disappear his videos...many followed suit ( no pun intended).

Good Evening NonRabbit: Have you ever logged on to Wolfgangs Vault? Great site by the way, tons and tons of artist, Tull included. This is one song by Van Morrison that I really liked and I just happened to catch a concert on Wolfgangs Valut. If you are not a member, its simple to sign up. Well worth it. Here is the link for this Van Morrison concert that was taped live at the Filmore East in San Francisco on 4/16/1970. concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/van-morrison-concert/1141-8350.htmlEnjoy. Wolfgang is the middle name of Bill Graham..the SF promoter who generated a lot of controversy, being a tall tree in the forest blunt guy...but very smart and ideatlistic...no doubt the reason one of his legacies is the huge music sharing 'vault'....On one Tull tour, contracted by Graham in a number of West Coast cities, he noticed that the bands' wine demands were not prodigious...but quite specific and expensive...in each city Tull requested three or four bottles of rare and $$$ wine...so Graham sent in a roadie with a corkscrew...shouting 'let's party', into the dressing room and a Tull henchman quickly explained....'don't touch those...they get shipped to England for Ian's wine cellar'....just as Graham suspected...neverhteless...Tull and Graham remained friends and Graham always used Tull as an example of professionalism and commitment to audiences....

I no longer have a playlist on myspace due to a complete ban and removal of co-operation between Playlist .com and Myspace due to ..........copyright blah blah I wondered how folks got the music for TheirSpaces; I didn't know if it was something people just turned a blind eye to like YouTube or if there was an arrangement of some sort...so, if this is stopped, is there another alternative for putting music on or is that it?

Song for Jeffrey has been pulled from Youtube now- well the song has but the visual is still there! As someone posted recently - Youtube is a great way of introduction to a band/musician - NOT a negative !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea all the copyright removals on youtube are a shame...however, call me old-fashioned.. but too many people are missing out on the amazing experience of actually purchasing a physical CD with Jewel case and all because they are getting stuff online.. I love the internet, but somethings just cant be replaced digitally!

These are 2 different tunes on this video. The Lawsuit has no merit except to grab money from a band that made it while the other one did not. Similarities YES Stolen musical chord progression NO !

I beg to differ - I think the similarities between the two pieces of music, at least to my ears, are far too close for comfort. I'm willing to accept that any infringement is coincidental and possibly a case of constant hearing of one piece of music over the duration of the tour but if one accepts other similar cases - the Jethro Tull/Eagles case for example - then there is an argument for such proceedings. In any case both parties will let the lawyers have their day in court and earn vast amounts of wonga in doing so no doubt .

No Memory Of That Night i65.images obliterated by tinypic/2j691xh.jpg[/IMG] " Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant has told a court hearing the Stairway to Heaven copyright dispute that he has a dim memory of the time it was written. He said he could not remember meeting the band Spirit, who claim the band stole their guitar riff for Stairway to Heaven in the 1970s. "I don't have a recollection of almost anyone I've hung out with," Plant said, causing roars of laughter in the court." www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36592517
