www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/feb/21/roads-less-travelled-brings-former-jethro-tull-gui/‘Roads Less Travelled’ brings former Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre to the BingThu., Feb. 21, 2019, 11:40 a.m. Martin Barre recorded a majority of “Roads Less Travelled” at his home with engineer James Bragg. (Courtesy photo / Courtesy photo)By Azaria Podplesky Guitarist Martin Barre can’t remember the last time he was bored. Barre, who spent more than 40 years in Jethro Tull, likes to spend time with his wife and children and go for walks or runs. He likes to sail and snowboard, though he also likes tennis and table tennis. He also loves watching movies. He recently saw “The Favourite” and praised the costumes, locations and Olivia Colman’s performance. “There’s a lot of things I like doing in life, which have nothing to do with music, but for me they’re very, very important,” Barre said from his home in England. Even still, he’s unable to partake in these hobbies as often as he would like. As it turns out, being a legendary guitarist is quite time-consuming. The latest addition to Barre’s extensive discography is “Roads Less Travelled,” which was released in November and brings the Martin Barre Band to the Bing Crosby Theater on Friday. This time around, Barre wanted to pay special attention to his songwriting and arranging. Writing music comes naturally to Barre, but he still considers himself a beginning lyricist. He doesn’t want to, in his words, throw out “I love you, you love me” lyrics and then repeat the chorus 20 times. “I think the lyrics have to stand up to the same standards as the music, so I spend a lot of time,” he said. “It’s never going to be what I want, but I guess it’s as close as I can get.” Barre recorded a majority of the album at his home with engineer James Bragg, though Barre said the days didn’t feel that long. When it was time to record drums, Barre and Bragg headed into a local studio. “I don’t use expensive high-tech studios at all,” Barre said. “Just a computer, good quality mics and, hopefully, good playing are the main ingredients.” “Roads Less Travelled” is Barre’s eighth solo album. Listening back to his previous releases, finding them to be “complex and bitty,” Barre realized that his music has to be accessible to listeners. His goal is to write music that has a flow and a rhythm, an emotion that runs through it. “It doesn’t have to be complex time-wise or really intricate music,” he said. “It’s got to be very harmonious, tuneful, and you can put work and musicality into it, but it can sound simple. I like to think that my music sounds simple but if you scratch the surface, you’ll find as much as you want to.” Like he’s come into his own musically, Barre has also taken to his new role on stage – front and center, instead of stage left. It was a difficult transition at first because Barre never really spoke while performing with Jethro Tull; lead singer Ian Anderson had that part covered. He didn’t know what to do or say, he just knew he wanted to say something. “I think when you perform a concert, the music has to be top quality, the playing has to be top quality, but people are watching, so it has to be quite visual,” he said. “It’s an occasion.” Over the years, he’s grown to enjoy the banter between himself and the audience, and he doesn’t shy away from awkward moments when the audience doesn’t laugh at something he says because those moments make each show different. “I want people to know that every show is a special show,” he said. “There’s no nights when we’re going through the motions. Wherever we are, however many people we’re playing to, every show is a one-off and it’s very important to us.” At this show, Barre promises audiences will hear a mix of his solo work and Jethro Tull tunes “they haven’t heard for a long time.” “We don’t have an agenda, other than to play really good music and put on the best show we possibly can,” he said. Loosely speaking, 2019, Barre said, is the 50th anniversary of the first time Jethro Tull came to the United States. To celebrate, he’ll perform a Jethro Tull show later in the year on the East Coast, though he’s sure he’ll eventually bring it to the West Coast as well. In the beginning of his solo career, Barre said some people would expect to hear nothing but Jethro Tull music at his shows. Over time though, they’ve grown to love the combination of Jethro Tull songs and Barre originals. “It’s a very healthy balance,” he said. “I think people are really getting to know me. With YouTube and Facebook, they’re pretty sure of what they’re going to get.”

I'm on Martin Barre Band countdown..ticketed for nearby Mill Valley on Thursday and I might be able to go to same venue Wednesday depending on work realities that will reveal themselves by late tomorrow. Sadly I cannot attend on Friday...truly a shame because I trust Martin 100% to keep his promise to deliver a very special night at that venue to repay fans who got railroaded by an early gig with a strict, club-clearing time limit last time he was here and allowed himself to be booked as an evening show before a later show by another band. He was unhappy and embarrassed and promised to make it up 'next time' which will come to pass on Friday.

Former Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre heads down own 'Roads'BY CESAREO GARASA For The Californian Feb 26, 2019 Jethro Tull might be better known for arguably making the flute a legitimate hard rock lead instrument and in stealing a Grammy win from Metallica. But when it comes down to it, the band has always been a bit belittled. They wore their eclectic, mysterious broadswords and minstrel image proudly on their medieval shirt sleeve, and no doubt influenced Spinal Tap’s “Stonehenge.” But the band was much, much more than that common generalization and it had superb material with sonic and thematic weight. The 1971 album “Aqualung” was a massive success and its title track, along with Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” and Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” is in the pantheon of “classic guitar riffs anyone can play.” From 1969 to 2012, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Martin Barre co-piloted the group through worldwide success and sustained popularity. He will perform with his own band at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace this Saturday. Since leaving Tull, Barre has concentrated on his own solo career as a guitarist, but more specifically a songwriter. His latest album, last year’s “Roads Less Travelled,” shows the 72-year-old guitarist playing with a sense of fluid youthful intuition and a craftsman’s bold confidence. “It’s the first album that all the songs I’ve written myself,” Barre said in a phone interview on the road from Everett, Wash. “My solo instrumental music is quite established, but as a songwriter I’m still fairly learning as I go. It’s an important exercise in trying to get the best songs down on record that I could.” Songs, like the odd-time “Out of Time,” the lovely acoustic instrumental “Trinity,” “Seattle” (the most “Jethro Tull” of all the songs) and the flowing “For No Man,” show Barre’s evolving maturity as a songwriter as well as his strength in editing. He’s kept his songs lean, powerful and engaging. Barre’s guitar sound also changes character from song to song; toggling between intricate, delicate and muscular while retaining an almost sweet clarity. Fans of Jethro Tull will enjoy it, but so will fans of prog-rock bands like Yes and especially solo-era Robert Plant in the 1980s: adventurous music, solid — almost terrifying — musicianship, uncluttered production and an opulent range of influences. It’s a balancing act between instinct and discipline. Solo material aside, Barre is aware of playing to the audience so the majority of the show will be Jethro Tull material. The set-list will include fan-favorites as well as some older, unexpected material. “That’s really refreshing,” Barre said. “They’re important tracks historically and they sound great because most of the early material was written around guitar parts, so there’s nothing missing sonically. It’s a strong set. It’s a good balance of music.” “It’s an exciting gig, and that’s what I want music to be.” The audience can also expect interaction from the thoughtful and pleasant Barre, who champions communication between performers and the audience. “I think, in many ways, people don’t know me. They know Ian (Anderson, Jethro Tull’s frontman) so well because he always traditionally did all the chat onstage. And I just think, 'I want them (the audience) to know me and the guys in the band.’ I guess now, after 70 years, to sort of get up there and not say anything, wouldn’t work.” As to that previously mentioned Grammy upset, this year marks the 30th anniversary of it: Jethro Tull winning the Grammy for the inaugural category of best hard rock/metal performance vocal or instrumental for their album “Crest of a Knave.” They beat out a list of hard rock, punk and heavy metal heavyweights that included AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Jane’s Addiction as well as that year’s frontrunner, Metallica, who had just delivered an electrifyingly intense performance of its song "One." The award was as good as theirs. The stunned reaction of attendees and viewers everywhere when Alice Cooper said, “and the award goes to … Jethro Tull?” reverberates to this day. The win was seen as proof of an out-of-touch Grammy selection process when it came to hard rock and heavy metal music. Barre is thoughtful in his place in Grammy history, only being able to acknowledge his side as bittersweet. “I think we deserved it, in retrospect," Barre said. "It doesn’t matter about categories and controversy. I think my only regret was that I wasn’t there to receive it. But the record label (Chrysalis) said, ‘No. You’ve got no chance of winning so we’re not going to fly you out to L.A..’ I felt really bad. I thought it was quite rude that we weren’t be there to actually say ‘thank you.’ I can’t change it, but it’s a big regret.” "It means the world and I’m sure I’ll never get another one. I’m just so glad that we had that one window of opportunity and I’m very proud of it.” Link

martineztribune.comMartin Barre lives in the past & looks forward at The Sweetwatertribune-admin 12 hours ago Arts and Entertainment, Life Leave a comment BY DANIEL GLUSKOTER Long-Time Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre, fresh off the release of a new solo album, kicked off of a brief two night stint in Marin with the first of a pair of shows at The Sweetwater in Mill Valley Wednesday night. ©DANIEL GLUSKOTER Martin Barre gestures to the audience during a performance at The Sweetwater in Mill Valley Wednesday night. Barre, who spent 43 years as the lead guitarist for Jethro Tull, is touring to support the release of “Roads Less Travelled,” his recently released seventh solo album. The 72 year-old Brit played beside Ian Anderson as lead guitarist for the groundbreaking progressive classic rock band for more than 40 years while selling over 60 million albums. Barre is touring in support of his newly released solo album “Roads Less Travelled,” his first new material in three years. Barre’s touring band, featuring the animated Dan Crisp on lead vocals, Alan Thompson on bass and Darby Todd on drums, delivered an outstanding near two hour set for the standing room only crowd in the intimate hall. While Crisp can sometimes be an imposing, although jovial figure, often showing facial mannerisms similar to Anderson himself, Barre came across as a uber-talented sweetheart, joking profusely with the crowd between songs throughout the evening and detailing how he first met his original future band mates on Christmas Eve in 1968. The new solo album, Barre’s seventh, provides a fresh and invigorating view of his diverse musical talents. It’s songs mix a combination of rock, jazz, and blues along with a touch of folk. Crisp sings lead on seven of the discs 11 tracks, including “Lone Wolf,” the opening track described as being inspired by An American Werewolf in London. It was one of three songs from the new release performed Wednesday. Another new track, the rocking Tull-like “(This Is) My Driving Song,” also stood out, but you can’t truly talk Barre, or attend one of his concerts, without a healthy dose of his long-time bands heritage commanding significant attention. Not remotely shying away from his roots, the guitarist’s set was close to 75% Tull material. A cover of The Beatles “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” one of the more obscure tracks from Abbey Road, was priceless. One can only hope that Barre will find a place for his interpretation of the song on a future release. But still, it was the Tull material that pretty much owned the night. It was literally a trip down memory lane to be treated to songs like “Nothing Is Easy,” “Hunting Girl,” “A Song For Jeffery” and “A New Day Yesterday.” The set closing “Aqualung” was nearly as fierce as the original that solidified the bands legacy back in 1971, and “Locomotive Breath,” the encore, continues to be near the top of any short-list of the most songs of the classic rock era. At the top of any educated list of the most glaring omissions from the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame, the Tull legacy, which Anderson himself stated “Without Martin Barre, Jethro Tull could not exist,” will be further enhanced with yet another upcoming album from Barre. A double album celebrating 50 years of Tull’s music has already been mixed and is scheduled to be released later in the tour featuring original Tull members drummer Clive Bunker and keyboardist Dee Palmer. In addition to tonight’s show, the Martin Barre Band will also be performing tomorrow night at Yoshi‘s in Oakland. Great concert last night. Martin his usual, amazing self and his band always getting better...Hey, how about Dan Crisp helping Ian? I know some night include a bit more of Tull's SLIGHTLY later stuff ( Back Door Angels) and deeper catalog ( Nothing to Say) By why is Martin going down Ian's tried old road of This Was and Stand Up songs ALL NIGHT? I was hoping Martin would find his way to truly, latter day Tull songs....like from Dot Com, Roots and Catfish...but...No...the newest song was Steel Monkey, the next newest 'Hunting Girl'....two from War Child, one from Minstrel...and all three the most predictable and Tull played...and TONS from the first two albums. They played about ten songs from Tull's first three years. If Martin isn't gonna play El Nino and Seal Driver and Black Sunday...who will ? He complained bitterly about same old setlists over the years and is falling into that pattern. I would so happily trade Aqualung and Locomotive Breath for well arranged stabs at rare songs.

Sorry but tbh Martin is playing songs you wouldn't hear again Nothing to say, Sealion, Hymm 43,Minstrel,Cry you a song, Thousand mothers etc etc Great classic Tull songs that later stuff didnt match end of The stuff of Roots, Dot com, Catfish is weak as piss in comparison Thats why Martin is focused on the golden years, his band have a passion, instead of being a robot I wish Ian would hire a decent singer and a TASTEFUL guitar player Thats what in seriously lacking in current IA shows The other 3 guys are passable no more, weak lineup in reality Never mind Stormwatch 40 is coming

Dont be silly Martin cant sing, he will admit that. Dan Crisp is the best you will hear copying Tull classics thesedays but he is no IA in his prime. Ive already said Ian needs to hire a singer end of His flute playing /acoustic guitar playing is the best, end of no argument His current band is crap compared to every lineup of Tull ive seen since 1975 Passionless, going through the motions, its very sad to watch being a true fan.
