As Exclusive for The Jethro Tull Forum An interview with Martin Barre - XIV Tullianos Convention 2016 Saturday July 2nd 2016 in Castelldefels - Barcelona
PR: What are your recollections of the recording sessions undertaken by The Penny Peeps way back in early 1968. Do any of these tracks still exist especially Model Village and if so would there ever be any chance of a public release ?
MB: [Laughs all round] Okay..The sessions were bizarre because they were under the umbrella of two songwriters Les Reid and Barry Mason who were responsible for a production line of dreadful hip pop songs. They more or less provided the track for the band to play on and Model Village was the B side and that particular song was recorded live. It wasn't great because it was done in a hurry and we weren't very good as we hadn't been in a studio before. I had only been in a studio once ..ever so it was pretty bad. About a year ago in America, I was doing a radio interview in a tiny town... I cannot even remember the name of it.Just a tiny little town but they were unbelievable people. Their knowledge of music was incredible. I could mention a name from those early days and they would know exactly who they were and I mentioned these sessions and they not only knew about them but they found a recording of the same material and a couple of hours later the radio guy gave me the cd of these recordings.
PR: Presumably these were recordings you did not have yourself ?
MB:No but unfortunately they sounded dreadful so nobody will ever hear them. [Laughter all round]. They are truly awful. Who's going to tell Martin that the "cat's out of the bag" as far as the Penny Peeps are concerned ? The song Model Village regularly crops up on "freak beat" compilations and he should find out where he can claim his back dated royalties. Old Webby wrote a piece for Record Collector a year or so ago which highlighted the original Liberty Records releases of some of the seven Penny peeps songs that have surfaced over the years and as proof M'Lud I enclose the following scans

Sorry everyone for taking far too long to revisit the Forum especially after taking in the 14th Tullianos Convention at the beginning of the month. Gosh....I really feel quite humbled by Remy's comments and support of my input at this year's Convention in Gava, Barcelona. I have to say though that the opportunity to interview my favourite guitarist of all time was in itself an honour and to return to Barcelona for this year's Tullianos Convention was always going to be a highlight in the calendar as indeed it proved to be. In addition to interviewing Martin, I also had the opportunity to hang out with Martin and the rest of the band during the weekend.Great time was had by all. Anyway here is a review I have written of the Martin Barre Band live at Tullianos 2016.
MARTIN BARRE - LIVE AT TULLIANOS CONVENTION JULY 2 2016 Gava, Barcelona, Spain.
You have to hand it to Martin Barre. Now in his 69th year, he remains quite simply a brilliant guitarist capable of writing some great songs who continues to look forwards not backwards. Martin is currently touring across Europe and the States promoting his latest album ' Back to Steel' - a tour de force album of blues rock with touches of folk and a couple of cover songs and Tull renditions to boot.In my view the new album is Martin's strongest to date and benefits from a band who really are ' very together' both on and off stage. One of the additional elements within Back to Steel has been the use of female vocalists Alex Hart and Elani Andrea and their input is something that Martin wants to utilise live more in the future. With Elani unavailable for current live work, Martin has recently recruited blues singer Becca Langsford to accompany Alex. Headlining this year's 14th Tullianos Convention in Gava, Barcelona provided the perfect opportunity to present the new 'extended' band.
Having experienced at first hand the wonderful friendship, camaraderie and respect of the Tullianos team in 2015 when Cold Flame performed at the Spanish Jethro Tull Convention,I was always likely to come back this year whether the band were playing or not. With Martin Barre announced as this year's headliner, the opportunity to meet up again with new found friends from across the seas sharing a love of all things Tull was just too good to miss. Apart from seeing the world's greatest living guitarist performing Jethro Tull music as well as tracks from the very splendid 'Back to Steel ' album , the trip also afforded the chance to relax on the miles of sun kissed sandy Spanish beaches under a hot sun before retiring to to the pleasant surroundings of base camp - The Hotel Flora Parc and a 'few' beers or more with like minded folk from the Tullianos team. This year, the Convention line up included a very good Jethro Tull tribute act from Valencia called Jethro Sur as well as young local band Underground, rock n rollers 5:50, Cristobal and Friends and the unusual choice of acoustic jazz from Catalan based Oriol Tramvia. The venue as always was the Marc Grau Auditorium in Gava just outside Barcelona. This is a top open air venue with a good sized stage and wonderful views wherever you choose to sit due to the natural incline of the hill on which the auditorium is situated. As it never rains in Spain, it really is a terrific venue whether you are on stage or in the audience. Starting in the early evening as the sun cooled to a mere 23 degrees, the various warm up acts took to the stage and kept the large crowd entertained throughout though I missed the invitation to sing Life is a Long Song with Cristobal and Friends early in the evening due to a late taxi pick up from the hotel. Shucks...maybe next time guys. Martin was due to start his set around 11pm and the band comprising Alan Thompson on bass guitar and vocals, Dan Crisp on lead vocals and guitar, George Lindsey on drums with Becca and Alex on backing vocals waited patiently behind the stage ready for their big entrance. Sometimes things don't quite go to plan...earlier sets seemed to lengthen and as Martin and co walked on stage, I checked my watch. Yep...12.15 am ! It is to Martin and the rest of the band's credit however that despite the lateness of the hour, their professionalism and respect for their audience and the occasion shone through. No compromise...the set agreed was the set played. Big surprise then when Martin began by introducing Alex and Becca on stage to perform five songs on their own though Martin did accompany the girls on a couple. Becca has recorded an album 'Big Surprise' and songs from the album were featured. Martin would like to take the girls to the States on tour. I can see why. Lovely harmonies, strong melodies with a slight American feel. These girls can sing and they were warmly appreciated by the audience and definitely by yours truly. Briefly the girls left the stage and all was set for the headliners....The Martin Barre Band. Opening up with Hammer one of Martin's powerful trade mark instrumentals and a track you can find on the new album, the band moved through the gears in double quick time. This is not just Martin with a backing band. This is a band in its own right with Martin as leader. Straight into two Tull classics - To Cry you a Song and Minstrel in the Gallery. It's always a real treat to hear Martin play Tull material. Lets face it he is the guitar sound of Tull and the crowd loved every minute of it. Martin might still be stage left yet he dominates the arrangements with searing guitar work supported by what is a terrific band. Yet for me some of the best songs performed during the two hour set were several of the pieces taken from the new album Back to Steel including the title track, Bad Man , Moment of Madness and the Tullish sounding Sea of Vanity. Accompanied by the lovely duo Alex and Becca, these songs displayed the growing talent of Martin Barre - the songwriter. The finale of no less than five Tull classics inevitably completed by Locomotive Breath sent the large Spanish crowd into seventh heaven. Checked my watch again as the band received a standing ovation following Loco.... Well after 2.30am but what a great gig. Having seen Martin perform several gigs across the UK with varied line ups during the last 5 years, I can honestly say that the current MBB is arguably the strongest line up to date . For those of you out there contemplating a Martin Barre Band gig...get out there and buy your tickets whilst you can. The word is that Martin plans to take things easier in another ten years.
Final word relates to the full Tullianos team and especially Remy, Albert and Jose Melon.. I cannot praise the members of Tullianos highly enough. They are a lovely bunch of human beings brought together from all walks of life by the music of Jethro Tull. Next year, Tullianos will be arranging their 15th consecutive event. I strongly recommend those of you out there who have never been to one of their events, you really should come along and who knows you might even bump into AND main man Dave Rees who has been strangely conspicuous by his absence as well as the ridiculously young looking ex civil servant turned intrepid photographer/ interviewer Old Webby who has also been strangely conspicuous by his absence.
SETLIST: Hammer/ To Cry You A Song/ Minstrel In The Gallery/ Steal Your Heart Away/ Back To Steal/ Eleanor Rigby/ Love Story/ Misere/ Sweet Dream/ Thick As A Brick/ Blackest Eyes/ Smokestack Lightning/ Cross Roads/ Sea Of Vanity/ Bad Man/ Moment of Madness/ A Song For Jeffrey/ Teacher/ Fat Man/ A New Day Yesterday/ Locomotive Breath

Well after reading this great review, I can not be impartial because I consider Pat a friend, also outside the small world of Tull. Without your help, (really almost all the work is yours, I put just the idea), the interview could not have been carried out. Tullianos is a group of friends who carried out the crazy idea to bring each year to the idols of his childhood, and this has been going on since 14 years ago, but this is possible thanks to people like Pat, Martin Driver a friend with great friendship with Ian and Martin, worked with Tull and in general is friend of the whole band and very close friend of Peggy (10 years at the convention) Rui Vasco Godinho Mendes of Portugal and so many and many people who selflessly help to this crazy idea go ahead . When I say that Tullianos is different is because you will be taking a beer on the terrace of the hotel with their "idols" nobody bothers we are together and have fun together, of course there is a time for autographs and photos but overall is a weekend with friends of many years. All I can say about Pat is little compared to what it really is, a friend, a great musician and composer besides great writer, and..... another year, I forgot to bring my Cold flame CDs to be signed Thanks again, not only in my name but also on behalf of all "Tullianos" R.T.
