bestclassicbands.com/chrysalis-label-sold-6-2-16/NEWS PLUS: THE WIRE - BREAKING NEWS Chrysalis, Home to Tull, Benatar, Blondie Sold to Founderby Best Classic Bands Staff Pioneering independent label Chrysalis Records, once home to such classic rock hitmakers as Blondie, Billy Idol, Pat Benatar and Huey Lewis and the News, has been sold by Warner Music Group to a group that includes its founder and former co-owner, Chris Wright. He started the London-based record company with partner Terry Ellis (who he later bought out) in 1968 to release music by Jethro Tull. The label’s enviable roster in the U.S. and U.K. also included Ultravox, Procol Harum, UFO, Spandau Ballet, Sinead O’Connor and The Specials, among many others. Plans call for the label to be reactivated by the partners that have bought it, which include Blue Raincoat Music (in which former Chrysalis Music CEO Jeremy Lascelles is a partner) and former Virgin Entertainment Chairman Robert Devereux. Among the label’s current acts are The Specials, O’Connor, The Waterboys, Ten Years After, Debbie Harry, Fun Boy Three, Ultravox and Generation X (a number of which are obviously not particularly active at present). Chrysalis was distributed in America by Warner Bros. Records from 1972 to ’76, and then was independently distributed. The label had its most successful years in the 1980s when Blondie, Benatar, Lewis and O’Connor all enjoyed huge pop chart hits and album sales. The label and its catalog was sold to EMI in 1991, and the Chrysalis imprint retired soon after. Its assets became part of Universal Music when it bought EMI in 2011. Universal subsequently sold Chrysalis to Warner Music. “Now that we got the label it’s a diamond that needs re-polishing, which will be back to what it used to be: a label with a fantastic identity dealing with cutting-edge music,” says Wright, who does confess that getting back the company he sold is a “surprise. It’s not something I dreamed about. I sold the label in 1991 and I never expected to see it again. That’s for sure. It’s a really poignant, emotional day.” He’s hoping to again make the label’s name synonymous with cutting-edge artists by signing new acts. “We will have the necessary infrastructure whereby if we spot somebody who we think has got the kind of potential that we want to work with, we will be able to do the job for them,” Wright says. “I’m hugely excited about what this new partnership can do. I think there is no end to what we can achieve.”

www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/warner-sells-chrysalis-records-back-to-chris-wright-and-blue-raincoat/WARNER SELLS CHRYSALIS RECORDS BACK TO CHRIS WRIGHT AND BLUE RAINCOATJUNE 1, 2016 [Pictured: Robin Millar, Jeremy Lascelles, Chris Wright, Robert Devereux]Warner’s process of divestments to the independent sector appears to be officially rolling. Chrysalis Records, one of the most iconic UK label brands of all time, has been bought in a deal led by Blue Raincoat Music’s Jeremy Lascelles and Robin Millar CBE. The agreement sees the co-founder and original owner of Chrysalis, Chris Wright CBE – a partner and financial backer of Blue Raincoat – reunited with the label. Wright returns as Non Executive Chairman of Chrysalis 27 years after selling the company to EMI for around $100m plus debt. The sale of Chrysalis Records by is almost certainly part of an agreed $200m+ divestment package of Warner-owned recorded music assets going to the independents. The divestment deal, announced in February 2013, was inked by Warner and Merlin/IMPALA as a result of the major’s purchase of Parlophone Label Group (PLG). The pledged assets, which have been bid on by indies over the past three years, are believed to comprise around a third of the value of Warner’s £487m ($765m) buyout of PLG. Artists on the Chrysalis Records roster include The Specials, Sinead O’Connor, The Waterboys, Ten Years After, Debbie Harry, Fun Boy Three, Ultravox, Generation X, the Two Tone label and many more. “THIS IS AN HISTORIC AND EMOTIONAL DAY FOR ME AS CHRYSALIS IS BACK IN THE HANDS OF MYSELF AND MY PARTNERS AT BLUE RAINCOAT.” CHRIS WRIGHT However, catalogue signed by Chrysalis in the US, including records from Blondie and Billy Idol’s solo work, don’t appear to be included in the Blue Raincoat deal. These releases are understood to be owned by UMG as a result of its original EMI acquisition in 2012. The new deal comes into effect on June 24th 2016. Jeremy Lascelles, CEO Chrysalis Records said “This is a wonderful moment. Chrysalis Records is for the first time in many years, back in the hands of an independent. And I’m doubly delighted that we have got Chris on board as well. For him to be reunited with a company that he started nearly 50 years ago is pretty special. “Chrysalis is an iconic brand with an incredible catalogue containing some of the great songs of its era – the likes of Ghost Town, Nothing Compares To U, The Whole of the Moon and Vienna, still sound as relevant today as they ever did.” Chris Wright, Non Executive Chairman, Chrysalis Records said “For me this is an historic and emotional day as Chrysalis is back in the hands of myself and my partners at Blue Raincoat. We’ll run it as an independent, revitalising the catalogue for the digital age. We believe it can become a new home for many established artists to sit alongside the incredible acts we already have.” Robin Millar, CCO, Chrysalis Records said “There are reasons why great artists sometimes get through and sometimes don’t. A great artist needs time, constant support and a strong team. That time and teamwork has been conspicuously absent in recent years. “It’s no coincidence we don’t have enough artists that change the thinking of a generation today. We’re letting the air back into that room and re-igniting the genius that resides in the Chrysalis vaults which is a big part of that process” Chrysalis was co-founded by Wright and Terry Ellis in a student basement flat in 1968. Under its new incarnation, the label says it will look to sign new artists. In April, Beggars Group quietly acquired a significant chunk of the Radiohead catalogue from Warner – but this was never confirmed as part of the official divestment process.

September 24, 2015 Waterside Wedding TERRY LINK September this year gave me a lovely little waterside wedding – on many levels! Very local to me is the famous Waterside Inn in Bray . This was a small wedding and the Waterside Innwas the perfect venue for James and Kim. The faces seemed familiar… Now, Father of the groom Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull) and Father of the bride Terry Ellis are legendary founders of Chrysalis Records – Rock & Roll Hero’s for me and I was to photograph their children’s wedding ceremony! My privilege in deed! Proud Farther of the bride Terry Ellis and Kim – This is a happy days portrait!

Incredible how the world "works." Little did they know that their future children would once decide to marriage. Life is strange... Terry Ellis and Ian Andersons children married... The legendary heroes who fought together so long ago... Sometimes life moves in mysterious circles... (and I'm not talking about the crop circles...) but what about this storie... One of my very old acquaintances, an onetime friend of mine, works as a teacher. We lost track of each other for about 20 years. My oldest daughter comes home one day and shows me some pictures of her school, and in one of those pictures is my old friend... He is her teacher...

www.ncl.ac.uk/alumni/news/item/alumnewschatstoterryellis.htmlPublished on: 13 November 2015 AlumNews chats to Terry EllisAs co-founder of Chrysalis Records, a former record producer and manager, Terry Ellis's contribution to music on both sides of the Atlantic – and around the world – is huge. On a busy day during Freshers' Week, Terry went back to the Students' Union where it all began. Amid the bustle of new and returning students, we caught up with the music mogul to find out about his time here… 'My first very strong recollection is standing outside the Students' Union, just like today,' Terry smiles. 'It brings back so many memories.' In 1963, Terry was responsible for kick-starting the Students' Union's reputation for having its finger on the pulse when it comes to booking exciting and upcoming bands. That reputation continues today as students up and down King's Walk hand out flyers for upcoming gigs. 'I wanted to make the most of being here,' he explains, 'I wanted the full student experience. 'I went to the Students' Union and asked for a job. The one job available was Social Secretary, so I gave it a crack. Usually they'd book the college jazz band and a local dance band for the entire year. It was the first year of BeatleMania, so I knew the students wanted pop groups. 'I did my research and I booked The Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, a popular local band, for my first two nights in charge – they played for two and a half hours for just £25. That was just before they changed their name to The Animals and became world famous!' The experience of working with up-and-coming acts was just the start for Terry. Throughout his career, he guided the career paths of the likes of Jethro Tull, Blondie, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Roxy Music, King Crimson and many more. The résumé of bands he has worked with reads like a dream playlist for any music fan. Coming to Newcastle Terry's time at Newcastle almost didn’t happen at one stage though. 'I was working in London trying to map out a career in computing,' he explains. 'I hadn’t done well enough in my exams to get into university the first time round. I was looking at job adverts and the penny dropped – I realised I needed a university degree.' From that point onwards, Terry began focusing his attention on coming to Newcastle. 'I was born in Hertfordshire, but my family are from Newcastle, so I was interested in studying here,' he explains. 'I came up for a visit and talked to the science department. They liked my enthusiasm, but having failed in my exams, I knew I had to retake them and get better results. So that's what I did.' Terry committed himself to his studies, while simultaneously holding down a full-time job. 'It was very challenging,' he says. 'I worked nine to five and had to travel three hours every day too, so I was studying on the train to and from work. Every waking hour outside of work meant studying.' This tenet of hard work and persistence would not only follow Terry throughout his time at University, but also throughout his long career. Upon graduating, Terry sought to have his own booking agency and he teamed up with Michael Jeffery, who managed The Animals and Jimi Hendrix. After a short period of time, Terry began to discover how competitive the music business was. 'I had youthful enthusiasm, but no contacts and no power,' he recalls. 'After a year I wasn't making any money, so I had to give it up. I was really upset, I felt like I'd failed.' When most people would have quit, Terry remained focused on carving out a career in the music business and it wasn't long before he – quite literally – got back into the driving seat. 'My mother helped me put a deposit down on a car. At weekends I'd drive to colleges and persuade them to let me organise their entertainment,' he says. 'I began to build up a roster of colleges who booked their bands through me. After a year I found I was making enough money to leave my day job as Computer Systems Analyst. 'I had found myself spending all my time on the phone to colleges booking bands. I used to go out at lunchtime from work with a pile of coins for the phone box. I would call the agencies and colleges and leave messages knowing it was lunchtime and everyone would be out. I'd then go back to the office and field the incoming calls!' Charting success Terry's career would see him co-found Chrysalis Records and turn it into one of the world's most successful independent record companies, chair both the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and serve on the committees responsible for awarding Grammies and determining the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 'Our philosophy at Chrysalis was different to other labels. We got into the business because we loved music and wanted to work closely with the people we admired,' says Terry. 'As time went on, I recognised I could handle more of the business side of things, which allowed the artists to devote all their time to their craft. It was exciting to do and meant I could positively impact an artist's career with the decisions I made.' Almost 50 years after those tentative first steps into the business, Terry acknowledges just how much the music industry has changed. 'Over the last 30 years, record companies became very powerful, sales soared and the dominant thing in the industry was record sales,' he says. 'From my point of view, the music industry is about artists getting on stage and performing. Record sales are a lot smaller these days, so musicians focus on becoming great performers, as that's how they make their living. As the emphasis is now on live performance, there are many more opportunities for people.' In spite of all his achievements throughout his career, Terry still recalls his first foray into the music business during his student days. 'I remember I booked Jimmy Powell and the 5 Dimensions, whose harmonica player was Rod Stewart,' he says. 'Then I booked The Graham Bond Organisation, which included Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, who later formed Cream with Eric Clapton.' 'I looked for what I thought were quality bands within budget. Agents would call and try to sell you what they had, but I always listened to the radio, looked at what records were out and tried to book groups who would go on to be successful – but always at a good price. I had exposure to some really great musicians at Newcastle!'

variety.com/2019/biz/news/reservoir-strikes-deal-for-chrysalis-records-blue-raincoat-music-1203318874/AUGUST 29, 2019 4:17PM PT Reservoir Strikes Deal for Chrysalis Records, Blue Raincoat MusicBy JEM ASWAD Reservoir has struck a deal to bring UK-based music company Blue Raincoat Music and its subsidiary Chrysalis Records into its portfolio of offerings, according to an announcement from the company today. The deal includes master rights to Chrysalis Records’ entire catalog, which includes Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Generation X’s “Dancing With Myself,” and more. Founded in 2014 by former Chrysalis Music CEO Jeremy Lascelles and Grammy-winning record producer Robin Millar, Blue Raincoat Music is home to a standalone operating record label that houses the Chrysalis Records catalog. The Chrysalis Records catalog represents more than 20,000 recordings ranging from the 1960s to 1990s. In addition to Sinead O’ Connor and Generation X, the catalog, acquired through divestment from Warner Music Group in 2016, includes recordings performed by The Specials, Debbie Harry, Suzi Quatro, Lucinda Williams, The Waterboys, Ultravox, and Everything But The Girl, among many others. Founded in 1968 by Terry Ellis and Chris Wright, Chrysalis was one of the dominant independent labels of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with hits from many of the above artists as well as Blondie, Jethro Tull, Pat Benatar, Billy Idol, Huey Lewis & the News and others, although it has not retained the rights to all of its releases. Ellis and Wright sold the company to EMI in 1990 and 1991; its publishing was purchased by BMG Rights Management in 2010. Reservoir was founded as a publisher in 2007 and has grown to represent over 110,000 copyrights and 26,000 master recordings dating back to the 1920s, ranging from songs by Hoagy Carmichael, and John Denver to Sheryl Crow and Phantogram. Lascelles and Millar will maintain their positions running the Chrysalis Records label, as well as Blue Raincoat’s day-to-day business operations, including overseeing a staff of nearly two dozen based in London. Blue Raincoat’s management and publishing arms are not changed by this deal and will continue to operate separately under its existing structure led by Lascelles and Millar. “Reservoir is committed to being a full-service music company, bringing the highest-quality and most diversified offerings to our growing roster of songwriters and artists,” said founder and CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi. “From the first meeting with Robin and Jeremy, it was evident that we had found the right partners to expand into the independent label business.” “It goes without saying that this is a turning point at Reservoir and we are thrilled to be working with Robin, Jeremy, and the entire Chrysalis team towards the seamless integration of our two companies,” added Reservoir President and COO Rell Lafargue. “Given Reservoir’s platform and resources, we saw an immediate opportunity to bring all the synch work in-house and have already secured significant noteworthy synchs with Fidelity Investments, Lionsgate’s 3 From Hell and FX’s Pose..” Millar explains, “The choice was an easy one on both sides. We each have huge respect for the other’s great team and how they operate. The shared dedication to supporting independent music with a global reach made the joining up the businesses ideal, with like-minded individuals and two companies respectively looking to expand their platforms and service offerings. Our relationship with Kobalt/AWAL is still in place for distribution and we will look to reignite that relationship with our new partners in Reservoir.”

Q&A with Terry Ellis of Chrysalis Orchestra Founder and CEO Principal Series:Chrysalis Orchestra LLC plans a forty-piece orchestra, playing dynamic orchestral reinterpretations of the great compositions of the rock era: songs like “Stairway to Heaven,” “Hotel California,” or “Satisfaction;” the music of everyone’s favorite rock stars, the likes of David Bowie, Queen, or Fleetwood Mac.
Chrysalis Orchestra would comprise forty young classically trained musicians, selected for their musicianship, for their love of rock music, for their ability as performers and for their ambition to succeed as individual stars.
Chrysalis Orchestra would have the typical instrumentation of a symphony orchestra but would be more like a forty-piece rock group. The musicians would be colorfully dressed; they wouldn’t be sitting reading charts, they’d be standing and when they’re not playing, they’d be clapping, dancing and interacting with the audience.
A Chrysalis Orchestra performance would be an evening of music and stories, perhaps enhanced by the presence of a star guest artist.
There would be two MCs on the stage between musical pieces, discussing the songs, putting them into context and illustrating them with anecdotes about the writers and performers. Initially, founder, Terry Ellis, plans to be one of the MCs with Grammy winning producer Peter Asher; between them they know, or knew, most of the stars of the rock era and have great stories to tell.
The MCs would introduce the musicians to the audience, add some humor to the proceedings and bring the evening together as cohesive piece of entertainment.
