classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2015-02-11/jethro-tull-unveil-minstrel-40th-anniversary-editionLa Grande version features rare and unreleased tracks plus bonus material Jethro Tull will reissue their 1975 album Minstrel In The Gallery to mark its 40th anniversary. The La Grande edition launches on May 4 via Parlophone and features rare and previously unreleased tracks including new mixes by Steven Wilson. It will be released on 2CD and 2DVD and is the latest remaster from the band’s back catalogue following last year’s War Child reissue. Along with the bonus tracks, the album comes bundled with an 80-page booklet featuring track-by-track annotations by mainman Ian Anderson, a history of the group and recollections of life on tour by road crew member Kenny Wylie, maintenance engineer Pete Smith and string section musician Liz Edwards. The limited-edition package also features lyrics, tour itinerary and rare and previously unpublished pictures. The second disc is a live performance recorded in Paris in July 1975 where the band showcased tracks from the album ahead of its launch. In addition, the album comes with a short film of the group playing the record's title track at the same concert. Additionally, on the same day as the La Grande edition launches, a stereo remix of Minstrel In The Gallery will be released as a CD single, on digital formats and as a limited-edition heavyweight 180g vinyl pressing. Anderson has confirmed he'll play a set of Jethro Tull classics at this year's inaugural Ramblin' Man Fair at Mote Park, Maidstone, Kent on the weekend of July 25-26. Tickets are on sale now. Every purchase comes with six months’ free membership of TeamRock+ which offers access to complete current issues of Prog, Classic Rock and Metal Hammer, along with 30 years’ of archive material. Its elaborate production is reminiscent of the band’s 1972 classic Thick As A Brick and its songs rock as hard as anything in the band’s vast and storied catalog . To mark the occasion of the album’s 40-year anniversary, Parlophone will present several new versions of the record. Minstrel In The Gallery: 40th Anniversary La Grandé Edition will be available as a limited edition 2CD/2DVD set on April 28th. Highlights from the set include: -Original album and seven bonus tracks (six previously unreleased), two mixed to 5.1 surround , and all to stereo by Steven Wilson -Flat transfers of the original LP mix at 96/24+ Summerday Sands -Flat transfer of the original quad mix of the LP + Summerday Sands -An eight and a half minute film of the band performing “Minstrel In The Gallery” in Paris from July 1975 -Presented in a case-bound DVD book that includes an 80-page booklet featuring an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson, recollections by roadie Kenny Wylie, Maison Rouge maintenance engineer Pete Smith, and string section member Liz Edwards plus lyrics, tour itinerary and rare and unseen photographs. Additionally on April 28th, a new stereo remix of Minstrel In The Gallery will also be released on a single CD, digitally, and on 180-gram vinyl as a limited edition pressing. When it was originally released, Minstrel In The Gallery became the band’s fifth consecutive US Top 10 album, peaking at #7 and #20 in the UK. It was also the last to feature the longtime lineup of Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evan, Barriemore Barlow and Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond. For this anniversary edition, the album has been expanded with the b-side “Summerday Sands,” several studio outtakes, as well as alternate session material done for a BBC broadcast, of the album’s title track, “Cold Wind To Valhalla” and “Aqualung”. The second disc features a live recording of the band performing at the Olympia in Paris on July 5th, 1975, a few months prior to the release of Minstrel In The Gallery. During the show, the band played songs from several of its albums, including War Child (1974) and Aqualung (1971), as well as an early performance of Minstrel In The Gallery. It was mixed to 5.1 & stereo by King Crimson guitarist Jakko Jakszyk.

Where did you hear that or is this just an assumption based off the other shows? I'd hope he didn't trim the My God segment for Paris.. You can trust in me. No assumption. Did you see my name in the liner notes of APP 40th & WarChild 40th? Yes, i regignize you :-)so, maybe you can Know : 1. Why did they left out the bbc version of Requiem. 2. Any chance the announced 8 minutes and half footage is a teaser for the future release of the Whole show on dvd/blu ray? :-) :-)

Why did they left out the bbc version of Requiem. 2. Any chance the announced 8 minutes and half footage is a teaser for the future release of the Whole show on dvd/blu ray? :-) :-) The usual reason for leaving a track off sets like this is that the master tape could not be located for a 96/24 transfer. Because I care about such things, from the information that I have gathered for several years now, it would appear that master tapes have been misfiled since the 20 & 25 year box sets were prepared. Unless the video from Paris 1975 is resurrected from the dead, I don't believe there will be a future video release.

What does he remember of Tony Iommi's time in Jethro Tull? Send up your questions by noon, Monday, February 23 to uncutaudiencewith@timeinc.com. Always nice when your hometown newspaper speaks Tull. Under: Kanye, Joni, Dylan and great musicians who say idiotic things -Sometimes they need to just shut up and sing Toronto StarFollowing last year’s 40th anniversary reissue of War Child, the Jethro Tull catalogue revival will continue with 1975’s more adventurous and, perhaps not coincidentally, less successful Minstrel in the Gallery. It’s due out April 28.

I'm confused as to CD2 of the new MITG release: regarding the 24/96 versions of the songs, are those being released only as from the original tapes NOT remixed, and the newly remixed versions are only going to be those which have been reduced in resolution to 16/48, the CD standard?
Any clarification would be most appreciated!

Am I being ungrateful?
Was there not a piece of Passion Play from this Paris show released on the 25th anniversary set?
As it's not included in this release.... what other tracks played (recorded) could have been included?
Is there a setlist from the night?

It's there..listed as Critique Oblique right after Wind-Up.....It was so amazing and so Tull to start 1975 right where they left off in 1973...with Wind Up of all things...brilliant surprise...and it segued directly into 'lover of the black and white...it's your first night'.

As it's not included in this release.... what other tracks played (recorded) could have been included? Is there a setlist from the night? The Ministry of Information has no set list for the actual night but one from the previous concert: 3/7/75 Sportsgalle Böblingen, Germany Minstrel/Wind-Up, Passion Play (Critique Oblique), Thick As A Brick (excerpt), Wond'ring Aloud/Again, My God (incl. flute solo), Cross-Eyed Mary, Minstrel In The Gallery, Skating Away..., Guitar Instrumental/Ladies (w. Drum Solo), 'WarChild Suite' (piano & strings)/Instrumental, SeaLion, Bungle In The Jungle, Aqualung, Guitar Solo, Back-Door Angels, Minstrel In The Gallery (Intro), Locomotive Breath/Hard-Headed English General/Back-Door Angels (reprise)
5/7/75 Palais des Sportes Paris, France Recorded (audio and film). Contributed a track (Passion Play Extract) to the '25th Anniversary' box set.
6/7/75 Palais des Sportes Paris, France Not a concert: the band recorded retakes in the empty venue. www.ministry-of-information.co.uk/setlist/75b.htm

Critique Oblique is the same edit from the 25th year set.

There has been a long ongoing discussion that other members of Tull had not given their permission to release this concert. Has something changed, or was there already permission to release the audio? It's a little confusing. Now that effort has gone into remixing the audio, it seems silly to leave the video on the shelf to collect dust... do we anticipate a separate DVD release of the video? I would love to see it!!

You know what .. I used to have a bootleg of the full BBC session of Minstrel, Cold Wind, and Aqualung ... and if you thought you couldn't bear to hear yet another version of Aqualung -- if my memory serves -- this version blows everything else into a cocked Alpine hat. In fact, all three tracks are *white hot* -- so for this alone, I'm looking forward to this release ... best Tull boot I ever heard.
Plus an almost-full 1975 concert? After all this time? Mustn't grumble. Maybe they cut the TAAB excerpt because it wasn't up to scratch, or maybe they didn't play it those Paris nights (though that would be odd ..).
Funny thing, though -- listened to the War Child anniversary edition and decided I didn't want it ... found most of it annoying, and one orchestral track in particular ruined by Ian playing some 'wretched' flute instead of leaving it to the orchestra's flautist. Too much of a vanity intervention. And far too many claggy 4/4 songs on the album and outtakes.
But I'll buy this one.

The concert was about two hours long, the recording we'll get is 70 some minutes, so a lot more than Thick as a Brick is missing - Ladies, an orchestral section, the drum solo, Warchild and Sealion are all left out although they were played that night in Paris according to the Ministry of Information, just like every other night on that tour. More than 40 minutes of the concert did not make it onto the recording.

I would suspect that it could be the case that to fit on a dvd in good quality, some of the "rougher" sounding track were left off. Not sure if I've got the boot of this concert but there was a good quality audience recording in circulation a few years ago.
