Ian Anderson On Ginger Baker’s “Hissy Fit” At Jack Bruce Tribute Show
All was apparently not sweetness and light during the weekend's tribute concert for the late Jack Bruce, which took place Saturday (October 24) in London and raised money for the East Anglia's Children's Hospices.
A roster of stellar performers -- including Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson, Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, Living Colour's Vernon Reid and more -- played in honor of the late bassist, but Anderson tells us that Cream drummer Ginger Baker, who was part of the all-star finale, nearly spoiled the proceedings:
"Ginger Baker decided to grace us with his presence and then unfortunately disgrace himself because he failed to complete a rehearsal on Friday or Saturday without walking off in a hissy fit, and he was basically impossible to work with -- I mean, very, very rude to the rest of us musicians who tried to be supportive. I for one went to Ginger on two occasions and was going, 'Ginger, come on. How are you doing? What can we do? How can we make this better for you?' But he's just a man who's in a very bad mood all the time."
"We then went on to do 'Sunshine of Your Love,' which for some reason as yet unexplained to me he played the first verse, and then in some state of anger just walked off the stage and disappeared, not to be seen again...Bit of a letdown and a bit of a sad, dark side to what should have been a very joyful celebration of Jack Bruce's life and work. But just as in Jack's lifetime, Ginger was often the cause of Jack's dismay and, I guess, heartbreak is not too strong a term because there was kind of a weird, dark love between Jack and Ginger but marred by this just awful, disagreeable clash of personalities...Even after Jack's death, unfortunately, that dark stuff came back to haunt the proceedings once again. Jack wasn't on the receiving end of it; the rest of us were."
Bruce is the subject of a new compilation, Sunshine of Your Love: A Life in Music, which came out October 23.
Anderson, meanwhile, begins a short North American leg of his Jethro Tull Opera tour on November 1 in Chicago.
