I have made it perfectly clear that I would have liked that all "Ian Anderson's" solo projects should be named Jethro Tull, but I also know when defeat is at my doorstep... We can't disinvent the car, and the name of Ian Anderson clearly adorns one production after another...
I would have liked that Ian had kept it simple, but unfortunately that's not what he has done... This is of course just one opinion among many, and I am not here to convince anyone that I have discovered the philosopher's stone...
I have created this thread in order to discuss the pros and cons of this development...

What's in a name?
Much more than a means of ID. It's image, influence and power. A band or a Company for eg will take great care in choosing the 'right' name to fit. As a side note -look at how the web has made a name even more intriguing. We can give ourselves all kinds of fantastic identities and hide behind them by not having to reveal who we really are.
Ian choosing to call the band Ian Anderson is similar to what I've done recently in calling myself by my pre-married name. A sign that things have changed,I'm moving forward reinforcing who I am now and making a fresh start.

I've no doubt that IA, and MB as well, have been advised to keep their respective names at the forefront of all "solo" musical ventures - the name is the selling point to be able to put bums on seats and the cyber space tills ringing with album sales. Even Paul McCartney after the breakup of The Beatles prefaced his musical activities with his name. IA could have released Homo Erraticus without using his name and a fair few people would not have known he was involved until the rumour mill sprang into action. It's all about selling your wares and making people know who is behind it.

I agree with my learned friends - its all for marketing/promotion purposes. The one bit that annoys me is the line of......... the name being stolen and giving it back to its rightful owner.....blah de blah, then using continuing to use it with Ian Anderson attached to it. Oh well he's the boss. Times change, at the end of the day we are getting all the new goodies by our favourite musicians. I'm going by to my pre married life to. Down the pub, eating food I enjoy, driving a boy racer, having a bet on the football, going to live concerts, swearing, chatting up the girl in the fish and chip shop and wearing hats. The pros & cons of Tull wandering. Searching for flute music expands to the A section. Ian Anderson filed under A, J or T Jethro Tull filed under J or T Problems with the name...? No Martin Barre. (I kid)

And if you think I'm joking, then I'm just a one-line joker in a public bar. And it seems there's no-body left for tennis; and I'm a one-band-man.

I wish Tull stayed with Candy Coloured Rain (some "Rain" songs might be in the EMI vaults) "The Man" & "My Green Tambourine" were other names considered. Oh, but the rain wasn't made of water

Derek Lawrence's idea for the group's name to be Candy Coloured Rain from the song by Traffic, I understand. jethrotull.proboards.com/thread/1419/holy-grail?page=1

My line, as far back as during line-up changes in 1976, has always been ' face it, If it's Ian and the janitors, it's still Jethro Tull'...Maybe that's why they did the broom and jacket schtick before TAAB I/II.
