Everyone loves Broadsword but me, right? ( The song, not the album...I love the album)....well. I would like to like Flying Colors but don't.
I love the lyrics and images and whole idea of Wooten Basset Town but I wish I was a teeny bit happier to hear it when it comes up in its turn....a little bit same for Power and Spirit....maybe it's impatience to get to Shunt/Horses/Confession/Kismet/What If?
Most of the other songs i don't like, I don't mind not liking but i feel bad about those 4....good thread idea, separating just dont like from wish i liked more, know I'm wrong.

Cup of Wonder is Kitschy somehow and does not rate my guilt for not liking enough. I want to like El Nino more

OneSundayFeelingDuck There are no rules ma leetle Duckie if you want to share your feelings about why you don't like a song you go ahead and share - we're here for counselling as well. I think Said She Was A Dancer starts off well and then gets a bit boring and predictable in the middle. Funnily enough the same as Enter .. It gets off to a good start then gets spoiled with the talking bit. That's why I liked John's video (I hope he's doing) as Enter ...should maintain a darker feel both for it's subject matter and for the way it starts. Totally ruined the atmosphere when he starts talking.

Yes agree Cup of Wonder isn't in the wish list. Broadsword I love and I think it does it's job ( on that special album!) as the first track and it's all rather majestic! Suppose the emphasis is on the 'biggies' rather than on the album 'fillers' in this thread? Hence my next post

A Passion Play
It goes without saying that any views on this thread are open to persuasion and could change over the course of my life.
Some day sitting in a rocking chair, resident of the Living In The Past old fogies home, APP played in the background (incessantly)on a decent music system kindly donated by Ian, with my fellow ageing Tull fans I might have that Eureka moment.

No easy answer.....I have sat beside the most well meaning, open-minded, good attitude Tull and non Tull fans willing, for that hour at least, usually in exchange for unspeakable, innumerable and very cumulative good behavior, attitude or totally unrelated heroics on my part, or just worn down , really try to understand, if not share a teeny percentage, what i hear during APP. They hear: Bombast, discord, franticness, mis-matched instrumentation, under-developed fragments, thematic dead ends and musical discomfort. I hear the nearest thing to perfection Tull or any music group ever did. There is no explaination, as far as i can tell. I mean, it's obvious that APP requires many, many, many listenings to crack....but when that doesn't work, .....? Let's leave it for the old age home. So back to the health regimen to make sure it happens.

In fact, the few musical compromise triumphs around Tull I have engineered ( an ex wife who really like Crest, Rock island and Light Music and a healthy percentage of other Tull, a lover here or there who understood why Velvet Green or Acres Wild deserved a post-coital spin now and again, an ongoing policy of allowing maybe one Tull CD out of 5 or 6 on a road trip to keep me energized....but all Tull tolerance came with very specific condition: NOT APP...not now, not ever....listen to it on your own time, thank you. Think it might be the spastic fist pumps during Overseer Overture that i can't control?

Puer Ferox builds up and flows so beautifully. Same should have happened in Enter..instead of an awkward break with the talking and listening bit. He could have still given an ' advancing marching' feel without that.

Enter could be longer and better but I don't think the recited bits ruin it...I think they do the job of describing American pop/crap influence on the more staid but curious old world.

Cool topic.
The whole Stand Up album -- All of the songs are good, but none of them are particularly special to me.
Wind-Up -- Just because I don't feel it's quite at the level of all the brilliant numbers that precede it on Aqualung.
Baker St. Muse -- Great for a while, but it loses me a bit during some of the later sections.
The Whistler -- It starts off so well, but the chorus disappoints.
Black Sunday -- I wish I could see what everyone else sees in this one.
When Jesus Came to Play -- Seems cool when I think about it, but lets me down when I play it.

I rather think "The Whistler" may have been an attempt to get a top 20 single in the USA, judging by the fact it was accompanied by a promo video, which failed in that objective. It used to be one of my favourites but has dropped down the "must listen to list" in recent years. I rate Stand Up highly although it's over shadowed by Benefit which in my view is a far superior album. But as is the case with all Tull albums we all have our favourites which is as it should be. Must agree with you about When Jesus Came To Play - a "filler" track if ever there was one.

I liked the idea of Wind Up and the name suits too however I always thought it ended too suddenly. The explanation for Black Sunday '...wish I could see what everyone else sees in this...' sums up well what I thought and still do about a few songs. I know you can't like all of the output but there must be (for me) certain bits of his music that puts me off. I know that some of the sudden jumps (don't know the techy term) have put me off and it looks like they still are aka Enter The ... Back to the thread Son - irritates me.

Stand Up = Great Album, Back To The Family, Look into The Sun, We Used To Know ( Hotel California ) For A Thousand Mothers ( love this track live ) Classics. Love all the 'B' side of Minstrel ( well I would ) and lyrics on Wind Up are immense. The Aqualung Live Studio version has a great version - really like Jonathon Noyce bass - really groovey ( can I say that on a JT forum? ) Black Sunday takes me back to The Albert Hall in 1980 when Ian Anderson waved to me - honest. Great Intro. Jesus/Whistler..... Well Blah.... Kissing Willie - forgetfull - I think they opened with this in Oxford Apollo 1990 ( Tull 90 Tour ) OneshoulderedDuck

I've long wondered if I would have a different opinion of the tune had I ever gotten to see it live. I bet performances of it were very energetic and exciting, and I could see the energy and excitement offsetting the repetitious use of the main melody that I take issue with when I listen to the album version.

The mind's eye video for 'Jesus Came to Play' is a great one...One of the few songs on that album I never get tired of.
