Steven Wilson Has “Passion” For Jethro Tull’s “Play” With New Box SetRead more: theseconddisc.com/2014/06/18/steven-wilson-has-passion-for-jethro-tulls-play-with-new-box-set/Jethro Tull continues its series of deluxe reissues with producer/engineer Steven Wilson on July 1 with the release of the (slightly belated) 40th anniversary edition of 1973’s A Passion Play. Following the reissues of Aqualung and most recently, Thick as a Brick, the deluxe A Passion Play: An Extended Performance will include 2 CDs and 2 DVDs – containing new stereo and 5.1 surround mixes of the original album and previously unreleased material – along with an 80-page book. As with Thick as a Brick, the set is priced affordably; as of this date, it’s available for pre-order at a cost of less than 30 dollars. A Passion Play was the band’s sixth album, and arrived on the heels of the U.S. chart-topping Thick as a Brick. Whereas that album featured one lengthy, continuous composition (split on two sides of vinyl, of course), A Passion Play featured separate songs, though the original LP did not identify them. Part I occupied Side One of the LP, with Part II on Side Two. The same line-up as Thick as a Brick played on its follow-up: Ian Anderson on flute, acoustic guitar and saxophone, Martin Barre on guitar, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond on bass, Barriemore Barlow on drums and John Evans on keyboards. The quintet began work at Château d’Hérouville. The studio, located near Paris, was the Honky Château of Elton John fame, and was also utilized by artists from Cat Stevens to Pink Floyd. Yet the band found that it was not the ideal setting to bring their new album to life. Despite recording roughly an hour of music, the band was dissatisfied with both the studio’s technology and its living accommodations. The group returned home to the U.K. where work began on an all-new set of songs and recordings. Recorded in a whirlwind of activity before the band was set to begin a new tour, A Passion Play was composed (primarily by Ian Anderson) to explore the notion that choices might still be faced in the afterlife. Taking the form of a four-act play, it began with the character of Ronnie Pilgrim’s death and funeral (which he attended in spectral form) and followed him through the afterlife, to Heaven, Hell and beyond. Par for the Tull course, it combined poetry and rock, and melded rock, jazz, and folk sensibilities into an intricate whole. Though it didn’t meet with critical acclaim at the time, the prog-rock opus followed Thick as a Brick to the top of the U.S. charts upon its release in July 1973.

APP deluxe - a quick review: WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL APP in all forms. Phenomenal 5.1 The Foot Of Our Stairs with (2 extra verses found on the end of the multi-track reel that have been added back in is quite jarring after all these years. ...trying to decipher what's going on with the bomb in his pocket. The bonus material on CD is all very natural since the echo that is on Nightcap is gone from the stereo version. The album in 5.1 is phenomenal to say the least. Château d'Hérouville Sessions material in 5.1 is a joy to me, too. Impressive is Steven Wilson's new stereo mix. All sound great including the original mix flat transfer of the album. A WINNER!

Ok TooTull....take a deep breath, calm down and back away. We need some real details here man! You pointed out the jarring addition of the two discovered versus and I had anticipated exactly what you experienced. I'm sure we all will. Undoubtedly the mixes are fantastic, as they all have been. What I'm really interested in is the difference in the true, original Château d'Hérouville sessions from the overdubbed one from the 90's. Does it sound complete? Are there vocals where the new flute overdubs were added? Is there even original flute lines or did Ian add those in the 90's because it was so unfinished? I suppose I could just wait another week but if the Château d'Hérouville sessions are very unfinished, I'm afraid I'll be disappointed as I'm almost looking forward to the bonus album more. Let us know! Thanks!

Let us know! Thanks! I'm not overly familiar with the true, original Château d'Hérouville sessions. ...always interested to learn more. Spoiler is not usually my game . Without comparing directly to Nightcap - all overdubs on Nightcap appear to be gone. IMO, no Tull fan should be unhappy with the Château d'Hérouville sessions as presented here. From what I know it's as complete as one could hope for at this stage of the APP game. Calm down... that's impossible with this in 5.1. Oh man...I'm freakin' out at how good Martin Barre tears it up in 5.1...Homo Erraticus stand back. Another view: forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/jethro-tull-a-passion-play-deluxe-edition-due-june-2014.346420/page-10#post-10682379 "I've played the cd's from the deluxe. This is my first Steven Wilson remix experience. The APP remix is cool. Only played it once. The Chateau stuff is different. I'm used to the 20 Years and Nightcap versions with all the overdubs and backwards reverb. The SW is really dry and will take some getting used to. I do like hearing the original intended running order. It does peter out and meander a bit without the overdubs. Will listen again today many more times. The book is cool too." "APP is the best Tull album ever." tspit74, Today at 8:24 AM (never calm) CHEERS!

Thanks for the link TooTull. Sounds like there was flute added on where there otherwise was none to begin with (Nightcap). Bummer. I sure hope that Scenario, Audition and No Rehearsal had no overdubs added on the 20 Years box set. I had always assumed those songs were in their original form. Favorites of my wife...she will be sad if they are not in complete form yet glistening in HD 5.1. Sounds like Ian really tried to polish up those original tapes and add a little spice and what we have now is a pristine copy of a very unfinished album. A Passion Play will no doubt be nauseatingly good. I can't wait to...get ill from audio overload.

APP For The Unversed, Uninitiated and Uninterested
According to the Tull annals and the oft used Tull cliché APP was an album that 'divided the fans'
I was in the 'he's gone to far up his prog a*se' camp so for those of us who didn't get it
What makes APP so good?

THIS IS THE BEST JETHRO TULL ALBUM EVERThe album is full of superb musicianship, powerful creativity and features some of IA’s finest vocals and acoustic work. John Evan's keyboards are inspired, sublime and entertaining. Martin Barre’s guitar is subtle and intricate. Barrie Barlow and Jeffrey Hammond take the composition through a bewildering and impressive number of time signatures. It may not suit those with a short attention span or those wanting wailing lead solos but they can go back to other albums for that. To me this is the Peak, The Holy Grail, The Pinnacle, The Unparalleled Greatness that is/was Jethro Tull Right thats the plagiarist homework done Off for some lunch OneMarmiteDuck

Tie me to the length of everything OWD said about Tull's pinnacle, best album ever, peak of all human art and music. The energy, the depth, the muscle, the strength, the contrasts, THE PASSION PLAY.
APP was the achilles heel of Tull...too far, too soon and too unsurpassable. No Tull album since or ever can survive comparision....
