Some of the songs on "MU" seem to be collapsed quad mixes. "Aqualung" is unmistakably the same edit used on the quad lp. One of the "Stand Up" songs, I think "Nothing Is Easy", comes out differently in a quad QS decoder, I don't recall which song it was. The album was announced for a quad release (but only released in stereo), and my guess is that a few songs were mixed into quad in addition to the Aqualung songs already just mixed for quad release. - thanks to Lord Hawthorne - Currently Untitled - Location: Portland, Oregon

I would say M.U. is my least played album but as you've gone to the trouble of starting this thread Mr. tootull I'll listen to it tomorrow. I remember getting this album as a present from my sister in law and she said " I know you like Jethro Tull so I bought this for you." Happy listening.

That's an interesting point about some of the songs being collapsed quad mixes, certainly Aqualung and Locomotive breath sound like they are. Anyway thanks for prompting me to listen TT, you've made an old man very happy and it helped me get through the ironing

It has aged well with me, I don't skip it these days. Two (best of) sentimental favourites that flow very well.

Are you guys being Ironic ? Some of my best Tull moments are when I've got an iron in my hand. I can do 14 shirts while A Passion play's on the gramophone.

We're all becoming quite responsible in our dotage, well some of us anyway. Nothing wrong with a bit of ironing and general housework - well that's my excuse.

History of man...

I grew up loving the poster that came with M.U. At twelve years old, I just thought it was the coolest thing in the world to be at that little dinner party. www.cupofwonder.com/lastsuppermu76.jpg

Not massively fond of 'MU'. Much preferred 'Repeat'. For instance, how could 'Fat Man' make it to the top eleven Tull tracks, while 'Minstrel' and 'Mary' (among others) didn't? Also, I don't think the edits from 'TAAB' and 'APP' that were included on 'MU' really gave a clue as to the majesty of those two works. On the other hand, the inclusion of 'Teacher' and 'Rainbow Blues' (for me, possibly their best 'unreleased track', alongside 'Silver River Turning') was a masterstroke. Actually, the only minus with regard to 'Repeat' is 'Glory Row', which I've always found less than stellar. Shame they couldn't have dusted down 'Lick Your Fingers Clean' (the third in my holy trinity of unreleased Tull masterpieces).

Perhaps, this 12" L.P. release in the year 2019 to whet one's appetite for the new album....

Somewhere I'd certainly add "Budapest" and as a nod of appreciation to the new guys "Change of Horses".

I play these albums a lot when I fancy a 'best of' listen. I always loved the covers of these two albums especially 'Repeat'. (Definitely suitable for framing).
I wish I still had the poster from the MU album though!

I wish I still had the poster from the MU album though! The poster was probably the first real visual access I had to rock and roll bands, other than the fronts and backs of album covers. I think M.U. came into my house about summer '77. I remember asking my older brother, "Do you suppose Ian Anderson listens to his own albums?" I was 11, at the time. His reply, "He doesn't need to listen to them. He can play them." Then, my Father said, "They look like druggies." My brother said, "Ian Anderson hates drugs. Never took them." When I heard that, I was hooked right away. There was something counter to the counter-culture going on, and I knew I liked it. A musician who appears to people like he takes drugs, yet despises drugs. I'm in. A week after M.U. came home we started buying Tull albums every month until Heavy Horses came out the next year. I always loved it when albums had posters in them. Such albums where my favorite posters were included were, The White Album, Kinks - One for the Road, one of the Kiss albums, can't remember, probably Love Gun.

I could never understand why these two 'best-of' albums didn't sell more copies in the UK when they were first released.
'Repeat' didn't even make the Top 100 in the album charts. They both did better in the USA though.
I suppose the musical climate in the UK at the time had something to do with it. The dawn of 'Punk' perhaps?

Glory Row is one of the best early Tull moments I can think of!

Remembering myself as a penny pinching college student, I am happy to say that I was more glad to get Rainbow Blues and Glory Row for $3.99 each than bothered that I had to buy two whole albums of songs I already had, The pot was sweetened a tiny bit by the extra tambourine on Locomotive Breath
