This question is for people who've seen either Jethro Tull or Ian Anderson play live in concert over the last couple years:
Has Ian Anderson been using the new Guo composite material flute he's been photographed with over the last while?
If yes, did you notice anything different about the sound?
The Guo flute is not silver-coloured, and Ian's been photographed with a gray-coloured model. It may have black keys instead of silver.

Not being able to play the flute or even knowing the maker's names etc., this is the type IA's been using recently.

Thanks! That's a silver flute. Shiny metal throughout, what's he's always used live then. Hope to hear the Guo flute from Ian at some point, he gets a different tone from the way he plays. Here's a student playing a standard light jazz approach, on a Guo flute (made of non-metal, available in various colours). It has a tone that's a little richer in the lower and mid-range, not as bright in the high notes. Ian Anderson wouldn't sound quite like this using the same flute, I'd bet. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lwNYd5jyqw

When Ian played at the Flutewise concert back in May 2009 he was presented with a rather ornate and intricate flute which, if memory serves me correctly, was either black or dark grey. The exact specification of it escapes me now but I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere on the web. The only time I've heard him play it was at the presentation itself.

I don't know if this is the flute in question futureshock. This is from the "flutewise" presentation from 2009. Part of the concert report and photo by ash. I was at the Flutewise event in the foyer about 4.00pm on and there were loads of flute players of all ages playing various music. Before the big flute choir at 6.00pm there was a presentation by Flutewise for their Flute players of last, this and next year. Each were presented with a flute in the colour of their choice; Ian went for the Black one with gold keys "nice choice " well it was that or red or blue ;D. Ian Clarke went for the red flute. IA then played the a few bars of Bouree and the flute choir played the rest, not the Tull version Read more: jethrotull.proboards.com/thread/408#ixzz2cE10H24H

I just spent an hour or so chasing down "plastic flute" and found a few leading models: Guo is one maker, I'm not sure what models they have available. There's an inexpensive "Nuvo" model for about $200US that seems to have an adequate beginner level tone, but here is a Tocco model (not sure if Guo makes this one) that has an amazing tone. It's running around $700US, but if the tone is this good, it's something I might get. I also found a video of Canadian flutist Bill McBirnie playing it and it sounded similar; rich tones throughout, and seems to be clear and loud! So far with the use of plastic, beginner level is where it stops, but the Tocco model is a step up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4iCh5ts9oMHere's a short clip of some guy in Brazil playing the Nuvo, illustrating the waterproofness of the design, and nifty sound effects available when playing the damned thing in a pool. www.youtube.com/watch?v=P--EQFRyAUA

I saw Ian play the Guo flute at The Stables Milton Keynes on 5th Sept 2011. I didn't realise at the time what it was but was lucky enough to ask him about it by the stage door after the show . They do sound very nice but more like a wood flute than a metal one, so not as powerful. They are very light and come recommended for anyone with RSI. www.justflutes.com/guo-grenaditte-flute-product71093.html and more here www.justflutes.com/guo-brand128.htmlFunny thing was at the time seeing Ian playing it I didn't remember I had picked one of these up at the Flutewise concert on the All flutes Plus stand which was there during the daytime. That's old age for you The flute Ian was presented with at Flutewise was not a Guo but a cheap beginners flute and these come in many colours to please the kids Fun but not much good www.justflutes.com/b-stock-just-flutes-tutti-fruity-flute-productJM5103.htmlHang on Graham ;)That's my picture taken with my old Olympus camera LOL

Thanks for the video links. So far, from what I've seen and heard, the Guo New Voice is my favourite sound of the bunch, with the Tocco second, but obviously the New Voice is better construction. The New Voice sounds like a wood flute but with a clean high harmonics, well balanced throughout, definitely not the silver sound. When I heard the Chieftains live in concert, the ebony flute I could listen to all day, and the silver can get a little thin. I can listen to Chinese flutes all day too, as long as they're not too high pitched. The New Voice seems like a great balance as a permanent option.

It was a good, if somewhat surreal concert but good none the less.

Yes the New voice looks like the best option and the grey one looks like the one you see Ian holding. Ian Guo flute by Ashley.R.G, on Flickr ian Guo flute 2 by Ashley.R.G, on Flickr
