Can anybody confirm for me whether the original German Vinyl Releases of these albums with posters were ...
Pink Island with the orange circle..?
or
Pink Island with the large white i label..?
I have seen both recently...over time I guess original LP's and covers are swopped around to make better condition pairs.

With the assistance of the electrocutas site, the original German Benefit release with the poster was on the pink Island "eye" label which would seem correct as that was the first pink variation design. This Was would have been the same.

Interesting ... as so many of these come up on ebay and all seem to have the pink letter i label which is the third variation after the second pink 'block' label, yes?
So people are paying out for a mismatched record and sleeve?

Yes that would appear to be the case. Difficult to be 100% certain as the German branch of Island followed its own rules and even when Tull and others had switched to Chrysalis in the UK (with initially an Island catalogue numbers and the "i" at the top of the label) the European issues were still on Island using all four "pink" designs. Have a look at www.my-generation.org.uk/island.htmand 45-sleeves.com/UK/island/isla-uk.htm both of which give a run down of the UK label variations.
