Hello!
Newbie here.
After a long search on eBay I found a U.S. promo copy of Living In The Past / Driving Song in Stereo. I read about this years ago and was starting to think that it did not even exist.
This was a Reprise promo release from July of '69, not the later stereo remix released in conjunction with the compilation of the same name. That collection included a remix with a slightly different edit for the last sixty seconds or so of the song.
The mix is certainly different.
Does anyone know if this was ever released commercially, or on any other release, analog or digital?

Thank you. I made an attempt to upload the photo here, but something went awry.

I've been after that release for some time but without any luck but I keep looking. Have a look through the memorabilia section here on the Forum and you'll see lots of vinyl and cd items, some of which are fairly common, but there are some rare items amongst the items that have been posted. Cheers Maddog

I looked for this one for a long time on ebay. Key was to check the images for the STEREO on the label.I think most sellers would not have a clue that the stereo copy was scarce. I was quite shocked that I was the only bidder, although a look at the history will show three bids. Once to make sure I would have a reminder, once to see if anyone else would test the waters and one last bid to cover the snipers. The seller was someone who had not been active for years. This disc was buried among a bunch of glassware and barbershop quartet records. I did contact the seller after the sale just to get a little background. The disc looked untouched and a spin would prove that may be true. Vinyl too, not styrene. The seller got back to me and said her husband was a college DJ back in the early 70's. The disc had been sitting in a "metal box" all of these years.

Finally, after months of searching, I've got hold of this seemingly elusive and rare pressing of the US stereo Living In The Past/Driving Song promo from 1969. As Muzyck posted on the Steve Hoffman Forum Oct 5, 2012: On the '69, some of percussion on the right is on the left in the '72 version .
On the On the '69 mix the guitar is centered. On the '72 (based on the CD version I am familiar with), the guitar is in the right channel.
The flute seems to be mixed more up front on the '72 mix.
At forty one seconds into the '69 mix, there is a hard pan of the orchestra from right to left. The '72 seems to be more centered.
The '69 mix also has the orchestra in the left channel. On the '72 mix, it is centered.
The edit at about 2.20 on all stereo versions of the '72 stereo mix I have heard used a different flute overdub than the original 1969 single.
The '69 stereo has the same flute section heard on the '69 single. In stereo.
McLover replied I don't think this was commercially issued. I think the commercial single would have been mono in that era. Reprise was forward looking in the sense that they realized FM needed current singles in Stereo for airplay. Remember that most FM Top 40 formats needed current singles in Stereo to succeed. And most singles in that era were still mono only or Stereo side promos. Often the single would get released and be in heavy rotation if popular and then a Stereo LP would get issued. So many a Stereo FM Top 40 or Rock format would be stuck with no Stereo version to play until the LP came out 6-9 months later. Which meant then the tune was a recurrent or even an oldie by the time Stereo LP was available to play. Until 1975, there were a few holdout labels who did not issue Stereo 45 singles commercially, Bell and London labels major examples. I think Reprise went Stereo in 1971-1973 on commercial stock 45 singles along with Warner Brothers.forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/jethro-tull-%E2%80%93-living-in-the-past-%E2%80%93-stereo-mix-from-1969-promo-45.298420/

On another board today (SH Forums) a member pointed out that the stereo promo mixes I have on this were released commercially in Spain and Portugal on a 45 in 1971. Island 14.972 Can anyone here confirm? I found an image tonight on ebay and it does have "stereo" on the label. (By the way, I tried to log on with my user name and was not found. Figured I was on the wrong forum so I registered again and found out that my user name was unavailable so I created another. Kind of a taboo so if a mod can help me get this sorted, I would appreciate it)

As for your user name question - it's one of the mysteries of Proboards that glitches like this happen from time to time. My suggestion would be to use the account you've created for muzyck2 and the next time that you're logged into the Forum click on your user name > View Profile > Edit Profile > Personal > and then edit your user name back to muzyck in the box provided. Click on save button and your account should then show you as muzyck

No updates from our members in Spain? Anyone? I'm still of the opinion that the US stereo white label promo disc is a unique mix.

I agree. A resident "expert" on another forum claims otherwise without any claim to own or have even heard a copy of the Spanish 45. My bet is that the conclusion is based on the "STEREO" image on the label. I will hold out hope that someone here can confirm one way or another. It is a rare item as it is and I don't want people spending large amounts on a fake.

I managed to get a copy about a year ago which I posted here and over on 45cat ( www.45cat.com/record/0845 ) and the images there show the difference between the mono and stereo copies so that anyone trying to get a copy knows what to look for. As for this mix, I was told about this many years ago, if memory serves me right, at one of the UK Conventions by a highly respected American collector and even he, at that time, didn't have a copy but knew of it's existence. Other collectors have also mentioned it so it's out there but I believe in very limited quantities.
