Well...I finally moved...and it seems I was moved by 'Murphy's Movers'...no DSL...it could drag on for days as the phone company and techs figure out how the last tenants butchered the wires...plumbing trouble galore...trick shelves and drawers as far as the eye can see...and my first load of laundry exposed a poorly connected drain pipe and flooded my hall. My stupid cat has gone back to the old house ( I only moved around the corner) 5 times, so far...everyday i come home from work and have to go to the old house with the kitty carrier and schlep him back.....my long fight vs the mortgage company ended with a whimper...I owed 497 thousand dollars...the bank bought the property from themselves in an auction and gave me a thousand bucks to clear out...and it's been listed for sale at 157 thousand...an amount i would have gladly paid to keep my home...fine...eff 'em...I'll slap my new place into shape in no time. Any hints on wet carpet solutions? so far I am just using the moving boxes as bridges thru the mess and changing them when they soak thru.

I'm sticking by my opinion about what you should do with the carpet!

Truly sorry to hear of your troubles bro but not surprised u seem to be surfing them just fine. Poor kitty has been taken out of his routine, a good squeezing will set him straight. I did not know that as fact about the Steelmonkey but I am occasionally surprised. I have also read of Jimi Hendrix' affection for who ever ZZ Top's main guitar guy, (and I do give ZZ Top credit for initiating some kind of Delta Blues Museum, they have probably always been alot better than I credit them for, I only know their hits, which strike the lame bell pretty clean) not sure there is one, and also that Jimi was very fond of the playing of Terry Kath, the original guitarist in Chicago who I think killed himself. I am only surprised because I have never been particularly fond of either band and would prefer if he had namechecked people I felt were groovier (man). I will take solace in Jimi's several interesting blues influences, T Bone Walker I think in particular, also influencing Jimi's early showmanship, sex basically. Good to see u sort of back monkey man!

Steel really sorry to hear about the house thing but at least the worry about it is over.. so upwards and onwards. How expensive are the carpet cleaner companies over there? They have industrial - size machines for that sort of thing and you will probably have to clean the carpets after ! But you have California sun to help ! ( I'm still being sympathetic- honest) The cat thing -I don't know - I'm not a cat person but someone once told me to put butter on a cat's paws I presume for it to sniff it's way back or maybe they were'n't cat people either Hope all settles down soon

Very soon it will realise that you are only on this Earth to look after it and will stay closley by your side to make sure YOU do not stray Worked a treat with ours when we moved. I still have the scars to prove it

Maybe room lockdown is the only solution...I mean, who can blame him for giving the old house a shot when i go to work or am otherwise absent for more than a few hours? I can't seal up the whole house...it smells too much of recently applied paint, random cleaning products and rotting carpet....ahhh...home sweet home...no wonder the cat relapses.

Bernie, I'm sorry it came down to that....I was really hoping you would be able to avoid losing the house. Hang in there bud, in time you'll settle in and things will be okay despite the problems you're having now. Jeff

Good news all around...the cat seems to be staying still, the phone company promises DSL by Wednesday and the carpet is drying out without apparent residual stink...unless I just got slowly used to it and don't notice...I'll watch visitors for expressions of shock and disgust when they walk in! Ian Anderson, as predicted, is adding somewhat reachable dates before and after SF...I have to figure out the time/money/babysitting/Tull lust calculus and decide if I should add Santa Rosa and Modesto to the tix I have for SF....Hey Bluehare? Would you drive to Modesto on a Sunday evening?

Never mind p***** off this week I'm p***** off this year STRAWBERRIES The promise of Summer since a wee lassie - my favourite fruit next to the mango et etc I bought a punnet and they were to excuse the Glaswegian "a right load o' sh***" Red on the outside -white the whole way through and definately, catergorically, absolutely no taste whatsoever! I could have been eating the plastic wrapper. After the second one I was actually wishing they had put artifical flavouring in them. What the hell has happened to our food? Can you feel my disappointment?

Actually, something did pi** me off this week...the proposed closure of 223 state parks in California. It costs 1/10 of 1% of the state budget to keep these parks open.

Sorry, I'm still pi**ed about this:o For every $1 it takes to maintain the state park, $2.60 in revenue is generated in the surrounding communities! Sounds like a no brainer to me. OK, rant over. Back to you

Doubtless I don't know all the facts, but I am with you on this rant Salamander, particularly if the facts you quote re 1/10 of one per cent of the budget are correct. I know more than a little about many of the state parks and likely no one can rival Cali for the amount of dead beautiful ones before you even get to the famous national parks like Yosemite or Redwood. I spent alot of time in my years of working the outskirts of pleasant society, now unfortunately many years past, in some of those places. Few things of nature get my heart going like redwoods and sequoias, Cali specials, natures unquestioned might in full flower. I sure miss the area around Point Reyes where long ago we recreated our own Acid test. Have another hit of sweet California sunshine, apologies to the Quicksilver Messenger Service.

We were reading over here about Arnie's cutbacks! Did he not say he was going to ban books in schools? !! In fairness I believe it wasn't an outright ban on books per se only on textbooks which I suppose makes sense. It is probably more interesting for kids to learn facts from the web (official sites!!) rather than a boringly long wordy textbook. I know that wasn't his main concern though As Rebecca asked "What are the plans for the land?" While I disagree with building on greenbelt land - over here in the UK there is also very much a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) attitude to new homes for the rising population. I know the UK is tiny tiny compared to US however it was always going to be inevitable (sadly) that land was going to have to be utilised for the future generatons.

Thanks guys for your support California has a 24 billion dollar defecit and that is why they are talking about closing state parks, among other things. They will just lock the gates and walk away. they will not be removed for any other purpose, just left to the elements. And by the way, we are having a real estate sale. If you are looking to buy a prison, San Quentin prison is for sale, as well as the Cow Palace in San Francisco and the Los Angeles Coliseum! The saga continues.

Sounds like they wanted to do something "cosmetic," that really doesn't really help but just let's people think they're doing something.

No cutbacks on prison building here in the Golden Gulag State...in fact, when Arnie was reminded that ongoing cuts in education, drug abuse treatment and resources for poor mentally ill people would invariably crowd the prisons he said 'break ground'!

I keep changing my mind about whether to leave this here or not, but I guess I will. I've got a sweetheart going into politics and that means we have to "take a break," he says.

It depends on why he thinks that there should be a break AND I'm not asking that you post this on here honey The fact that he's suggested it makes it an issue - just keep asking yourself if he's worth the wait.

He knows I would be with him if he wanted, and I know I've been more into this than he has been, so I guess it's the oldest story in the book. I don't like change, but what are you going to do? I won't wait, because for one thing I presume that if he wins (which I'm sure he will, he's very popular) the "break" will continue. But if he comes around later and my plate isn't full, I don't see the sense in turning him away.

On the other hand (continuing my self-absorbed thinking out loud) I don't see myself as the political type girlfriend or wife or whatever, probably anymore than he does. Well, maybe if he were a (straight) Harvey Milk type. But it's not that kind of community and I'm no doubt too bohemian for that. And I like my life and my lifestyle - I could compromise but it probably wouldn't be good for me in the long run.
I'm just going to miss him like f***ing hell!

Becca, you've got to forget about this guy, he was no good to treat you like that. And whatever you do, please do not "stay friends" with him. Cut him out entirely. If he calls you, don't pick up, if he attempts to contact you in anyway, do not answer. (You really have to be like Pharoah when it comes to this.) You realized it was probably going to be a short-live dalliance anyway. I know you will bounce back soon. Jeff
