Sad is the word. As with most everything in life these days, money speaks, soft hearts lose. The truth only whispers. Damn!

well..at least the Scots have a sense of humor about the thrift reputation...our local grocery store chain, Safeway, labels the off-brand, in house generic items: 'Scot's Buy' with a little Scottish, tartan-clad cartoon character brandishing a fistful of pennies....I NEVER see that without imagining the uproar and protests if it was called 'Jew-buy' and maybe showed a Hasid on the label smiling about saving a few pennies!

I'm not surprised based solely on the TAAB2 idea and how/who is on it. IA has a tremendous ego - it's hard to stay humble after years of success and being 'front and center' as he has been. Too, after how many recent past years of having no new JT music it's not surprising.
But I believe MB - he has said what happened and really, what's not to believe? I'd say based on that alone, that JT w/MB and DP is over. Since I believe what MB said in the interview is true, the comment that IA had been planning things in advance of telling DP and MB is really pretty 'tacky'. If there is respect there - then why wait to tell them?
JT IS NOT JT w/o MB (and to a lesser extent DP) MB is the signature sound - yes IA's flute certainly/obviously is as well - but MB's sound is special - his talent is unique. I can say that I am not really interested in IA doing any kind of a 'rock album' where the guitar would have a big presence.

Made it to here; Reunited Jacksons kickoff tourwww.presstelegram.com/ci_20959244/steve-smith-reunited-jacksons-kickoff-tourGUITARIST MARTIN BARRE ON THE END OF JETHRO TULL Martin Barre, former guitarist for British rock-folk-blues-prog rock band Jethro Tull, tells industry publication Goldmine that it was group leader, singer-flutist-guitarist Ian Anderson who broke up the band he co-founded in 1967 and that Barre joined in the first months of 1969. "Ian just got Doane (Perry, Tull's drummer since 1984) and I in a room and said he didn't want to play in Jethro Tull anymore." Anderson apparently had been planning to record a sequel to his 1971 Jethro Tull concept album, "Thick as a Brick," but he didn't want the rest of the band to play on it. "When Ian announced on the American tour last year that he didn't want to do any more Jethro Tull shows, Doane and I had no idea that he was planning to do 'Thick as a Brick 2."' Anderson recorded TAAB2 with the members of his solo touring band between March and November last year. The album was released to considerable acclaim in April. Anderson is spending the summer touring Europe and Israel with his band, performing both "Brick" albums. Then, he'll bring that show to America from Sept. 18 through Nov. 5, including concerts on Oct. 17 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, Oct. 19 at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, and Oct. 20 at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre. Barre spent June touring the U.K. and Europe as a member of The Legends of Rock with Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood and a surprising member, former Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer; Asia singer-bassist John Wetton; former Yes singer Jon Anderson and members of Supertramp and Barclay James Harvest. He says there's talk of bringing the tour to Canada in January, and if so, he sees no reason why they won't tour the States. He also leads a band that plays nothing but the music of Jethro Tull called Martin Barre's New Day. Former Tull bassist Jonathan Noyce is a member. This band plays loud rocking Tull songs Anderson deleted from Tull's set lists for years, often for decades. "I've also spoken to other guys, like (former Tull drummer) Barrie Barlow on the possibility of putting together a Jethro Tull band for America, which would have some interesting people in it, like maybe (original Tull drummer) Clive Bunker. I quite fancy the idea of having the lineup of Jethro Tull from a long time ago performing again. It would be hard to get some guys, I know. John Evan (Tull's pianist during the '70 s) lives in Australia. It wouldn't be an easy task, but it would be good fun trying."

The legends tour is what rightly belongs in the wretched casinos that Ian has booked for TAAB I and II.....if you ever need some bubble-bursting feedback on Ian/Tull's place in the current rock hierarchy...check out some of the other acts booked at places like the casinos in New Jersey, Connecticut and California that will host Ian and chums this Fall......and who knows who else plays at the corner stores they are slated to grace in Florida.

I just have a horrible feeling, and I do hope I'm proved wrong, that Martin is going down the wrong road in all this. As much as I liked and appreciated his "New Day" three date mini tour in April, he seems to be stuck in a rut which Ian Anderson appears to have got himself out of with TAAB2 after all the greatest hits tours of the past few years. I'd just love to go to a Martin Barre concert and see and hear his own compositions, perhaps a nod to his Tull heritage with a couple of numbers, some covers as he did with his Summer Band and some cracking guitar instrumentals of which we all know and love. Ditch the second guitar, bring in a keyboard player (Andy Giddings or Maartin Allcock) and really take the guitar hero "thing" to a new level.

They've been doing 'greatest hits' for far longer than the past few years...when it's billed as Tull, it's been 'Beach Boys' nostalgia since the 25 year tour with the sole exception of 'Roots' which had 7 or 8 new songs....Dot Com, in California only had 3 new songs: Title cut. spiral and hunt by numbers....it was still greatest hits. Ian solo tours and rubbing elbows had some surprises and the orchestra tours had radically new arrangements and new Rupi songs but Tull has been guilty of greatest hits for a long, long time

Not exactly true. When we saw them at The Wharf out of nineteen numbers about half were Tull songs and the rest were Martin's instrumentals, one was a composition by Pat O'May and two were sung by Maggie Reeday, one of which was a composition by MB.

To that I can only reflect that Jeff Beck takes a "guitar" tour on the road, with a talented band, has an eclectic set and it works for him. Martin has his guitar playing to show, some Tull tunes, his own tunes. Nothing holding him back.

Martin has the talent, has the contacts and has the musical knowledge to build up a great band. In my opinion, he has to get a keyboard player to strengthen the sound and, as he was when he was in Tull, Andy Giddings would be the ideal person to fill this role. Perhaps one major "problem" that Martin has is that for 40 plus years he was perceived by many to be the right hand man to Ian Anderson and it will take a fair bit of time for him to convince non believers that he has flown the nest and is his own man.

Right...Martin has to identify his audience...the people who buy tickets to see Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani for example...crappy legends programs and second rate Tull cover bands are destined for derision but a guitar evening in correct sized venues would result in respect and recognition.

Man, I've been doing a low boil thinking abot how IA basically gave the 'shaft' to DP and MB. Again, that's assuming that MB is being straight up about what happened...and again, I believe him.
Really, after all the years of playing together, IA has gone and truly pulled a 'one-off' with this 'stunt'. Having for years respected the music, the efforts, both on stage and in the studio, to me, it's all been disrepected by IA and his monumental ego. I say that because truly, you mean to tell me that was/is his way of putting an end to all JT has been? Too, writing lyrics like a 'Change of Horses' as a way of saying it was time for a change???
Really??? I'm supposed to take his TAAB2 effort seriously after the way he vaulted MB and DP into the nether regions while he waxes poetically about fictitious Gerald? The whole effort that is TAAB2 got a lot less serious to me when MB took the EFFORT (IA are you listening?) to set it straight. Come on IA, grow some b----s, as you said once in song, "....come clean for once and hit us with the truth."
Because at least for me, MB, whether his tour idea or format is the best way or not, at least isn't hiding the truth. As JT fans/followers/loyalists, don't we deserve that much? What a friggin' pisser'.

While I agree Florian is a gifted player and Martin has the expertise gained over many years we will have to accept that IA has chosen this line up for a reason - talented musicians who do not have pre-conceived ideas about the music. Whether we see and hear Jethro Tull play again is doubtful imo, at least with the present shenanigans going on but at least we have IA and his band and MB and his band on the road. A final thought - the Forum youtube of MB's New Day band performing the Passion Play piece has had over 2500 "hits" since it was first put on our youtube channel 2 months ago - now that must mean something to both MB and IA I would have thought.

Don't get me wrong snaffler, I love the stuff Martin has done within Jethro Tull all these years, and nobody could've done it better, but outside of that his stuff doesn't do it for me. I have his three solo albums, but can't find anything really great on any of them. A Blues for all Reasons from Trick of Memory probably one of the few tracks I've played more than a few times. Am I alone in thinking those solo albums were pretty bland.... He has performed some awesome solo's within Tull over the years granted... ..I would nominate the solo in Sparrow on the Schoolyard Wall as one of them....

Tend to agree re the solo records Jack, having said that I do like nearly all of the material, was not crazy about the female singer in the summer band and I think his first solo record. Not a fan of the whole lotta soul Martin though I am a fan of some of the music that inspired it. Probably my favorite non Tull work is with Willy Porter. Still laying 23 to 1 odds that they will play together again, in part because nearly all speculation, some time reported as hard fact, has come from fans. It would be a trip to see Martin in FC, but I do not think it is what either is looking for, though Maartin Alcock did perform a similar role in FC for 10 or so years. Martin singing a verse in Walk Awhile would be pretty cool.
