I don't believe they have ever made a perfect song, let alone album. There again other's perceptions of perfect may be different. Off the top of my head something like Miles Davis Kind of Blue nearly makes the bill, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, various of JS Bach's things, particularly small ensemble baroque type stuff gets in the neighborhood, as do various interpretations of his Brandenburg Concerto. Even the Beatles never made what I would call a perfect album, but somewhere between 8 and 10 perfect songs, with as many in the neighborhood. So personal, passionate and long standing is my relationships to Ian Anderson's music that I may have long since lost sight of what is perfect, only know it fits me like no other, pretty much regardless of era. Having said that, it dawned on me about a year ago that were I to somehow divine my favorite 100 songs, it is possible, though not probable, that there would be nothing from Tull in the top 50, though littered with Tull in the second fifty, he has so many great, though not perfect songs. In a moment they can be perfect, like the Flying Dutchman video someone made brings it up that next couple steps to me to perfection, ditto the one someone did of Fairport's A Sailor's Life. There are songs by people who on the whole I am not an enormous fan of that would make the top 50 and are likely at or near perfect to me, Summer Wind by Sinatra, Salty Dog by Procul Harem, Witchita Lineman Glen Campbell. One Tull record that almost completely completes its mission statement is the Christmas Album, sort of perfect for its intent, and visiting though not necessarily improving upon many of my favorite Tull songs, brought down a bit by that sort of creepy first snow on Brooklyn song. Ian had it real bad if he had taken to peaking in windows. But until recently little had changed with what I regard as their best, TAAB, SFTW and Stormwatch. And now and still...TAAB2. God knows before the seventies had even come close to passing I had had more perfect Tull moments than any individual has a right to expect from any entertainer, and very little has changed in all the years since save for getting alot older.

The closest to perfect, IMNHO, is MITG....I like APP better but it's harder to find a flaw in Minstrel.

I know what you mean re an album perfectly formed however you and I might have fisticuffs over this because MITG left me cold and even now it's only got up to lukewarm.
I'll be back too.

Always going to be subjective this I guess, but for me it is SFTW and HH. Not going to better that IMO!
My one big regret is that I never saw Tull during that era. Bit of a latecomer, I'm afraid!
Zob.

"Benefit" with Teacher is first up here: A nod to our friend john lennonist. www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=292133Yes, I stole the Perfect Albums idea...what's new? Feel free to steal from me, anytime. HEY! Three in a row, oh my, perfect to me, they fit so well together : Stand Up Benefit (USA or UK version) Aqualung I don't believe they knew that I was Long John Silver.
Saw Johnny Scarecrow make his rounds in his jet-black mac (which he won't give back) stole it from a snow man.

As high as the highlights are on SFTW and HH, the schmalz content, musical and lyrical, on Cup of Wonder, Solstice bells,Moths, One brown mouse and Fires at Midnight is a bit high for me.

What do you know? Excessive sentimentality or rendered animal fat? (The poor HH...suffering at your hands, the shame.) Do tell us more?
;D ;D two of us, the grins.

HH rules! Low Rider? Cisco kid? Spill the Wine? Me and Baby Brother? or Sliipin' Into Darkness ? You see, I was playing the Best Of War yesterday. Low Rider crazy. Spill the Wine, a summer ritual. Though I don't normally drink wine...and I don't normally play War. A perfect album for me is Supertramp, Crime of the Century, perfect sound, perfect songs. If not for Tull...let me say... Repeat - Three in a row, oh my, perfect to me, they fit so well together: Crime Of The Century Crisis? What Crisis? Even In The Quietest Moments...

Aqualung
There wasn't a duff song on it - or in 70's terms no running over to lift the needle.

Talking past. Toronto radio stations played War to death. Spill the Wine could easily be burned to the brain, it was played so much. Eric Burdon was quite obviously a god to T.O. radio stations.

Just got invited to see Dylan and Knopfler the night after Tull in October...had to keep Tull a secret cuz I'll be calling in sick that day to drive to and from gig...could i do both? Drive 300 miles after work on Wednesday to see Tull Thursday nite and drive back, thru the night, after the concert, in time for 8AM work on Friday and see Dylan/Knopfler that night? After a few days rest I get to see leon Russell in a small jazz club on the 24th...but three concerts in one week...I probably saw three concerts in the past year!

5 hours..I can't go fast...got nailed in not one, not two, but three speed traps last year with daughter in car providing 'are we there yet' chorus...so I'm one ticket away from losing my license to drive....California plates in other states ( nevada once, oregon twice) are police magnets in small towns that lost their whole tax base in ongoing recession, property value plunge and make up for it charging transit tax to out of town cars going .00000001 mile over the speed limit.

No No...not a jazz concert...i would surely doze at a jazz concert even without being exhausted from a Tull R/T and work...Leon Russell at a jazz club...a nice, 150 seat venue to see a cool oldster who filled stadiums circa 1973.

I would like to redeem myself well slightly MITG hits the spot with me with the sublime, the superior, the immensely melodic, multi-layered and very very clever (Good Old Days ??).... OWD - it's one of his best and yes I'm listening to it as I type

Okay...don't touch that dial...well, turn it up a few notches for Baker Street Muse. I don't know how to break this to you but it leaves me cold and always has. Something as simple as I don't like the tune I don't know.. but MITG is a mystery to me. Maybe I've never moved on from the horrible feeling of buying MITG and expecting the usual warm feeling from a Tull album and not getting it. Ian brings it up everytime we meet
