"Fireball' was one of the first big boy albums I ever bought...you know, part of the tramsition from kiddie rock and light stuff to real rock and roll for big boys...probably got Fireball about a year before i found Tull...oddly enough, I first heard Dep Purple on eight tracks in a car piloted by a mean Black guy who was my boss on a job going to new areas in fast growing Denver and earning as buck each for signing up homes for newspaper subscriptions....we drove all over town in his big car...about 6 of us 14 and 15 year old workers....on a steady soundtrack of 'War', 'Ohio Players' and Deep Purple...it was years later that I learned that Richie Blackmore was a Tull fan....geez....71 years old....how can guys be 71 and passing away who milliseconds ago were med twenties rock stars in prime of life....I don't get it...

Was really sad to hear the news today. Seems like he was a nice guy and a big big part the Deep Purple sound.
A few years back he wrote some music that was performed in Durham Cathedral. After the concert there was a meal for the musicians and other guests in Durham Castle. My daughter worked as a waitress in the castle. She came home that night to tell me that she had met this really nice old man from some group called "Deep Purple". He had apparently been very nice to all the staff, left a good tip and spent some time talking to them....
The first big concert that I ever went to was the DP "Burn" concert in the Apollo in Glasgow. My ears hurt for days after that... but what a group.

Me neither.........I don't usually quote those" quotes" you get on the internet however...... "Inside of every older person is a younger person wondering what the hell happened" Although Tull is the sound of my youth (TAAB2 - the songs in the key of my mid- life?) Deep purple songs were vying for a place too. Fireball etc and this one..........

Sad news indeed or though not entirely unexpected considering his illness. Another one joining the great gig in the sky.

This is sad news indeed.
They are building one helluva band in the sky Maddog. Makes you realise that we have to appreciate what we have, while we have it!
Cheerio Jon Lord.

In this strange world of coincidences...
1. the Beeb had loadsa footage on Beeb 4 just over a week ago where they had mucho Jon L interview footage (heavy Metal Brittania etc)- I had only just seen these (I suppose) repeats when I set off to play a festival last w/e.... and there came J Lord mention no.2 for me within a week...
2. Backstage I met Richard Digance for the first time ever (he who supported Tull on the Heavy Horses Tour) and I mentioned my youth which was filled with 'heroes' in many bands... He told me tales of Tull and other bands/personalities of the day (Rich is highly amusing and interesting to talk to!) And there it was... Rich was recording at Barrie Barlow's place - was having trouble with the middle section of a version of 'A Nightingale sang in Berkely Square' (If i've remembered what song it was correctly! - anyway - it was an old music hall 'standard') Barrimore got on the phone to Jon Lord and he says - I'll be round in ten mins (he lived that close). Rich panicked and told Barrie 'but there's no budget for this!' - Barrie said he'd 'sort it'. Jon duly arrived - played all the song with no trouble at all - easy fodder for the fab keyboard man - and they hung out awhile - Jon eventually and reluctantly accepting a bottle of vodka (or suchlike) as payment.
3. Sadly then, the third part of this in a week, the news that Jon has passed. May he rest in peace.
As a footnote - it might be an idea for the forum to contact Richard D and ask if he'd be up for an interview on here? Mebbe a Q & A regarding the HH Tour? If he accepted, the forum would get a good insight, put by a most amusing character! How bout it then you administrators?

I am from Ayr (an honest man through and through) and went to uni in Edinburgh but saw loads of concerts in Glasgow. Tull seemed to give Edinburgh a miss of a couple on a couple of tours...
The concert details you linked to remind me that it was that concert I went to.. remember Elf being the support.
It is quite likely we were drinking in the same places.. were you the lady standing on one leg with the Tull tee shirt? We generally just went to the pubs nearest to the Apollo..
Good days though - I remember being offered a parachute for my seat in the gods at the Apollo. It was some place..

It would have been dependant on what part of the evening I only drank in the town when I was going to a concert, occasionally, I would listen to bands in the Howff and actually met my husband when he was playing at the Maggie in Sauchiehall St - he was the singer in the band ...awww ;D I'm surprised the Apollo stood for as long as it did. The balconies were ready to collapse however that wasn't the reason why people kamikazed over them - they were just mad. No health n safety in those days.

Lovely tribute to Jon from Anna Phoebe who worked with him annaphoebe.com/content/read.asp?ID=95&title=Jon-Lord"...anyone who has ever met him will understand what I mean - anyone I have ever spoken to about him only has positive words to say about him. After me gushing endlessly about Jon and his music, my partner finally met him backstage at the Sunflower Jam at the Albert Hall last year (which I think might have been Jon's last public performance). Afterwards he turned to me and said "NOW I see what you mean. I've only just met him and I love him already!". He just had that special effect on people..........."
