I am so happy right now and so pleasantly pleased and SURPRISED at the 2 great shows I just saw Sat & Sun.
There was another poster here who had my same sentiments a few months ago because I think we were both at the New Jersey Pac show last November, and it was the only time, after some 45-50 shows that I actually walked out of a Tull show. I was just totally disgusted at that pont and never thought I'd go to another show. It was the last straw for me. I disliked it so much that I, too, didnt go to Hammerstein (a venue I luv) just a few days later.
I dont know what possessed me to go to the Jones Beach show Sat nite except that, on the day of show, a few scattered great seats became available and off I went. Damn!! I could not believe what a great f**kin show they put on! OMG!
I was the guy here initially getting totally on IA's case, so disgusted with his vocals, the types of shows Tull's been putting on the last 10 yrs., a total "oldies" retro-type act. Even the many snippets from this tour on video looked and sounded like the same old $h1t.
Then, Saturday happened. I dont know what happened?! Tull were amazing. Ian was more dynamic, energetic and just plain sensational. I swear it's the best I've seen him/them.......since the 1995 "Roots......" tour. No bull$h1t . And I must concur with peeps here who said his voice (even tho it's still what it is) is stronger than it's been in a long time. Martin was on fire. And Doane is so good.
Plus. Ian looked in great physical shape and genuinely "possessed".
For those of you who dont know, The Jones Beach Amphitheatre holds 20,000 people. And it blew my mind because Tull's played there many times and , for at least the last dozen yrs, it's been about (at the most ) 3/4 capacity, usually quite a bit less.
But Saturday EVERY seat----TWENTY THOUSAND- was filled.
I even wonder if this had a glorious effect on Ian cuz he sure played gloriously. And maybe Frampton as the opener brought peeps out, too. But, whatever. I dont think Tull plays places this huge anymore , am I right? I mean, Jones has the same # of seats as Madison Squre Garden. And it's been, easily, 25+ yrs since Tull could sell out the Garden.
So....went again last nite to Mohegan Sun. Just as great a show!
They were so tight! Ianwas soooo good that nothing perturbed me at all. The same lame prostate jokes, the same exact choreographed moves, Ian's vocals....all did nothing to dampen the phenomenal 2 shows I just saw. I was sooo skeptical but it's like Tull were possesed with a spirit & energy I thought was long gone. (Tull to me is still Ian, Matin & Doane, who's a real trooper.)
What 2 extraordinary shows:
"Reasons For waiting".... Sossity"... A FULL "Heavy Horses" etc. The Calliandas.
Gorgeous.
Bye for now. from Bronx, New York
