There are two types of peaks to consider: style and content. TAAB was a peak of content and style, while I think APP was a peak of style much more than content. SFTW was a peak of style, but I think HH surpasses it as a peak of style and content, though SFTW was excellent on both counts. Aqualung strong on both counts. There are certainly arguments to be made for Minstrel being the highest of both peaks.

I am in the position of not really being able to make a similar judgement, as on any given day one of my least favorites is suddenly my most favorite, with a somewhat blind stab that TAAB 1 is my favorite, the style points to me would be an unvarying constant from the first note of This Was until now.

To me, every album is still it's own entity - I consider them on whether the instrumentals match the meaning and 'content' of the lyrics - in their entirety as a complete story.
Most of the JT efforts (to my ears) are successful when considered that way - I may like one more than another, but then it's just a matter of listening to a different album, then I return to considering the JT catalog as described above and I'm back to neutral territory.

In the 40 odd years I have been listening to Tull, I have to agree that my favorite Tull album changes. I appreciated the comments about content and style. Been listening to War Child lately.

My instand reply is always 'A Passion Play', but then I think about it and, hmm, must be Minstrel In The Gallery. Of course I'm sure I've listened to Aqualung more than either of them. Maybe picking a favorite decade would be easier?

I would like to vote for 3 or 4, but given that I can give the nod to just one, would have to say TAAB. APP (and the Chateau D'Isaster Tapes) is right up there too. Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung and MITG following close behind

What about Living in the Past? I know it's a compilation but it's pure brilliance from start to finish. If I can't have that though, I listen to Stand Up most.

Aqualung, hands down, followed by Thick as a Brick, Stand Up, Songs from the Wood and Minstrel in the Gallery.

Passion Play Thick as a Brick Minstrel in the Gallery War Child Benefit Heavy Horses Aqualung Under Wraps Songs from the Woods Crest of a Knave Rock Island Dot Com
Except for top 4 this changes daily. If solo albums were included both TAAB 2 and SLOB would be top 6.

Passion Play Benefit Heavy Horses Thick As A Brick Crest Of A Knave This Was Songs From The Wood Aqualung Nightcap The Broadsword And The Beast
The top two are sacrosanct and immovable. Everything else including those albums not listed get regular appraisal - yes even Too Old . . . .
For the various solo albums: Thick As A Brick 2 Walk Into Light Divinities Stage Left Any, and all, of Mick Abrahams' work both solo and with Blodwyn Pig

Aqualung, hands down, followed by Thick as a Brick, Stand Up, Songs from the Wood and Minstrel in the Gallery. Tough to argue this. I'm in with Stand Up listed first. Not necessarily my favourite album these days, the others would fall into that category with Minstrel in the Gallery leading the way. The acoustic guitar playing on Gallery is most enjoyable.

Thick As A Brick 2 is old news for now. Adding: TAAB2 makes me want to reach for Dot Com, & when I do I prefer Dot Com. I prefer Martin Barre in this comparison. I miss Martin Barre.

Passion Play Thick As A Brick Songs From The Wood These are my top 3, then there are many who may be behind as Minstrel In The Gallery, War Child, Heavy Horses, Benefit, Crest Of A Knave, The Broadsword And The Beast, Nightcap, Rock Island and of course Aqualung which stood at separate section for all what it means for the band TAAB 2 I consider it a Tull album, because it sounds like Tull, probably would be in my top tens. On this tour I have not found wanting at Martin, I have focused on the present and I enjoyed both concerts of TAAB 1 & 2 in 2012 and 2013, one of the best Tull concerts in my opinion in the last 10 years or maybe more. Martin of course I consider the most important guitar player of Tull, underrated in the world of rock in my opinion, Martin is probably for me one of the top 5 guitarists at this time, and has improved over the years, probably due to the large number of tours that Tull has offered over its history, certainly one of the groups with more live performances in history, but if we compare Martin with Florian, we have to compare Martin with 30, then I think Florian has a great future ahead and you have to give him his chance. think I voted too many albums, but behind the top 3 all varies by day...

Admirable and correct top three...as well as bubbling under.....SFTW has a few songs I don't like so I usually take HH from that era. I think it would be very hard to devise an permanant top ten....except the top few, it much be always changing for elite Tull fans. I like the idea of pulling Aqualung out of the pack and giving it a seperate category. TAAB 2 is in my top 5, currently.

My Sunday Feeling is certainly one of the finest songs to start an album and I still get a "buzz" when I play the song.
Glad to have another This Was fan here MD

Hello, cornick70! I, too, like This Was a lot, especially Dharma for One. My Sunday Feeling is a great album opener. As soon as it started playing, I knew I was in for a really strong record.

I could listen to APP repeatedly just for the drums, keyboards and inventive compositional textures going on. And lots of subtle chord changes going on.

A Passion Play is better than sex. It NEVER gets old, less collateral drama, less danger of dire consequences and more chance of something new each time.

APP ages little over time, the thing is just not made of iron oxide. Geological Survey of Canada has rated it "not the hardest of rocks but the lack of interstitial attentive gaps leaves it quite resistant to random trend collisions and clinical acid spills. We did not test the hare."
