I see that on ebay they are now going for around £12 - £18 which is not a bad return on 3 shillings ;D Interestingly, a professional press photographer I met somewhere along the line, reshot the cover picture from my copy of the Beat Instrumental illustrated above as the original negative could not be found anywhere. Never did find out whether it was ever used. Ho hum

You know Mr Fagin Sir I don't know whether to "kudos you" or "smite you" so to speak for putting up Jethro Tull and Chris the Burger on the same line up ;D ;D My sincerest apologies and I will accept any punishment you hand out. In my defence may I stress that this edition of Record Collector had a very knowlegable article on Tull by Dave Rees of A New Day and helped to redress the almost nonexistant Tull articles in the popular press here in the UK at that particular time. Obviously now out of date but well worth a purchase should anyone find the magazine cheaply. I rest my case

The only one I remember from mid -seventies rambles in the village is Bleeker Bob's in the West Village, I think...huge Dylan boot section, of course. There's something else lost in the passage of time! Don't suppose any of these shops exist anymore. Wooden floorboards/posters/people who really gave a sh** about what they were selling. I worked in one as a Saturday girl selling the trinkets and patchouli oil and the interview went along the way of ; "Do you smoke dope?" "Cool!" Best interview I ever had - no C.V's no "role-play" no crap £'ssss of pounds spent on the next new customer services ideas(same as the last one)....sorry I just lost an interview for promotion and the person who got it has the worst team playing skills you could ever imagine Mr Bean meets Simon Cowell ;D ;D Ps these shops were more fun than ebay

Along with great second hand record shops in London, there was a shop in Croydon, soulth London, called "Beanos" which I used to spend time and money in when I lived there. I alway found something to buy and would go home and sit down, put on some headphones and relax to the eclectic selection of music I had bought.
Sadly, the shop has closed as far as I'm aware but I will always remember the seemingly genuine interest and knowledge that the shop staff had.
As Ms Nonrabbit points out, you don't get that kind of service on ebay.

JETHRO TULL War Child (Rare original 1974 US Chrysalis label promotional-only 21" x 18" plastic display featuring the shape of the 'Eagle' title logo from the album cover. This looks to have been the template for the rare grey wax candle and matches the look and the shape. Made out of a thin plastic which looks to have been silver but has been coated in gold and given a distress look, this could have been the prototype but we can't say for sure. The plastic has started to show its agewith a few minor cracks & splits where somewhere in it's past this has been displayed, still in quite respectable shape for 35 years old!). Chrysalis Promotional Box Set (1991 US prmotional-only 47-track 4-cassette album box set - The Chrysalis Fall Line-Up: a brilliant promotional box set, featuring the major players in Chrysalis' Autumn 1991 releases, includes Catfish Rising by Jethro Tull, Gump by Sons Of Freedom, Beatsongs by The Blue Aeroplanes and the eponymous debut from Follow For Now. Regarding the BIKER pic: Not to be maudlin but, if you notice, Ian , John, Marty and BB are all looking straight ahead at the camera. John look AWAY. John died soon thereafter. Reminds me of the WHO album (forget the title) where only Keith Moon's chair sayw "Not To Be Taken Away"..............and Keith died soon after that. Hmmmmmm......

The 'jethro Tull in Vietnam article, in the Cream magazine above, ended up in an anthology of Lesater Bangs writing called 'Carburator dung and psychotic reactions'. The actual article was divided with begrudging respect for Tull, at the top of their popularity, selling out a huge arena in detroit, in seconds (1972) and the usual lester bangs dribble about how cool it is to be lester bangs and how everything popular used to be better when it was underground blah blah. Worth reading but ultimately wrong....a few native flutes in Vietnamese folk music do NOT sound like Jethro Tull unless you could keep up with Mr Bangs in methamphetamine consumption.

Lester Bangs' review of Passion Play in Creem is . . . . Dear CREEM Readers:
Having been foolish enough to assign it to myself, I have listened to this goddamned thing ten times, in hopes that I could find at least 23 cogently reversible words to say about it. I found myself totally bamboozled. Other than remarking on some nice hopping-burro rhythms, how I’ve always wanted to hear Ian Anderson sing “Rice Is Nice,” and the fact that any album with a cover like this (dead ballerina wit blood runnin outa her mouth) is sure to sell like Miracle Pictures of Jesus on gospel radio (big bucks), I have absolutely nothing to say about it. I almost like it, even though it sort of irritates me. Maybe I like it because it irritates me. But that’s my problem. Anyway, I don’t have to review it because I’m making bets on the charts instead of writing record reviews this month. I bet a guy that works for Warner-Elektra-Atlantic 50 bucks that Passion Play was gonna be the number one album in the country. I’m gonna win, of course, so I got no problems except one: how to get this dog reviewed. Therefore, in the true tradition of democracy and buck-passing, I leave it to you, the readers, to assess the new Jethro Tull album for CREEM. We don’t care whether you like Jethro Tull or not, and this is not a contest. But we’re (I’m) sure that you have at least as much to say about J.T. and P.P. as any snootful rock critic. So in as few words as possible, please tell the rest of our readers, (a) why are Jethro Tull, and (b) What is Passion Play about: Many more Tull reviews at www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Underground/6181/table.html?20099Happy reading friends. Maddog

That was some line-up there! Never knew that about Barre To be honest IMO it's not an oustanding album, good and listenable, and one for Tull completist or Ten Years After fans. I've never seen an interview with MB where he talks at length about this album but I may be looking in the wrong places. Has anyone seen one?

IF I had a scanner...and IF I was smart enough to use it...I'd share the humble contents of my Tull Museum---nothing mind boggling but a good supply of backstage passes, tickets, articles and advertisements similar, but a bit different, from our usual memorabilia fare. I fully expect my daughter to drag me into the 21st century within a few years. ( cell phone, i-pod, music downloading, scanner, etc).
