Released 10 April 1982 (UK) 19 April 1982 (US)
Video by Brad Bridges "BROADSWORD" is the first song on side two of Jethro Tull's 14th, studio album "The Broadsword and the Beast" The first side of the album is titled "Beastie", and the second side is titled "Broadsword". It mixes electronic sound provided by keyboardist Peter-John Vettese (a characteristic that would further be explored on the next album Under Wraps) with acoustic instruments. The album is a cross between the synthesiser sound of the 1980s and the folk-influenced style that Tull had in the previous decade.

You know what I think? I think they really should have kept 'Lights Out' on the original Broadsword single album...it fits the theme and mood so perfect...almost 'part II' of Beastie....and to make room? Give Another Christmas song the boot.

The Broadsword & The Beastis is IMHO a very rare example of 80's album where a successful all-out rockin' album blended perfectlly with electronic gimmicks.

Remix coming out later this year or early next year. Can’t wait. Tonnes of songs. Lots of strong compositions. Some with not so good production. Wilson can turn this into a ripper

According to my latest copy of AND, arrived this morning, The Broadsword And The Beast box set is likely to be early next year (which figures, fair enough), although I see a dark sail on the horizon: David Rees cast a doubt on Steven Wilson's availability for remixing duties. Would be a damn shame if he wasn't.
That's not to impugn the ability of anyone else having a go — other adept remix/curators are available — but it would be a pity if Mr Wilson, having come so far, were to drop the ball he has, up till now, handled so expertly and with consistent sympathy for the music. Continuity is all, isn't it?

Continuity is all, isn't it? The way things are going I think Wilson will get time. He said he hadn’t been asked to work on broadsword yet. Ian needs to get onto it lol. Hopefully he works on it over the next 6 months then he can take 2 years off remixing Tull. 2024 for Under wraps is ages away

Here’s hoping. I know Mr Wilson has gone on record as saying that Broadsword is one of his favourite Tull albums... I daresay he’d not want to pass on it after everything else that he’s done! Also, 2024 is a long enough way off to get that drum track recorded, should THAT Under Wraps rumour hold true...

One of the many reasons I hated the "On track" book by Jordan Blum. He described Broadsword as a "bland relic" consisting of "paltry song writing"! I reviewed the book on Amazon UK and would have given it no stars if I could! Do read the review and see if you agree with me. "Off track would be a better title.

He doesn’t want to spoil the surprise lol. I don’t think he’ll be doing another concert or album for a while. He needs some work . I hope they keep the under wraps drums. They will sound good with some toning down

Ian has confirmed Wilson is remixing Broadsword Excellent news. I always wanted some of the songs from these full sessions to be altered in production. Hopefully Wilson continues with his methods of reducing reverb and outdated ideas

I got the confirmation about Steven involved in BATB back in November, so it might be that he actually has already done it

Great that Ian has confirmed that Steven Wilson is onboard for the remix. I would assume we'll see a more significant remix with this album(Like Wilson described about "A")because of the 80's production. The good news is this album has a wealth of quality associated recordings to include in the remix. To be honest, I actually prefer some of the rejected songs from "20 years of Jethro Tull" and "Nightcap" to the actual songs from the original album release. It will be interesting to see if there is a "Early version" of "Mayhem Maybe" that featured Ian vocals from 1981/1982 instead of 1986. I think the 1993 remix of the song Broadsword is an example of the great possibilities.

The Broadsword and the Beast (1982) The cover art is by renowned artist Iain McCaig, long time fan of Jethro Tull. The art was made after a talk with Ian Anderson, and tried to capture the concept of the music. McCaig has stated that he intentionally drew hidden "easter eggs" in the album art. The runic symbols around the edge of the cover are from the Cirth rune system and are the opening lyrics to Broadsword: "I see a dark sail on the horizon, set under a black cloud that hides the sun. Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding. Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman." The album was going to be called Beastie, responding to the first track on side one. But during production the band deliberated over the preference between Beastie and Broadsword, the first track on side two. In the end they decided (as on Aqualung) to give each side its own title and thus its own identity, and this time to combine both in the album title. As the artwork also puts much more emphasis on Broadsword, many owners and fans also refer to it as the Broadsword album.

Sounds like 3.5 studio albums worth plus a few early versions. Wilson will be busy with this. More songs and lots of sound improvement to be gained. Wonder what songs will have early versions

Hopefully if there is a live concert included in the forthcoming box set, it will be from the USA leg of the tour later in 82 with Paul Burgess on drums. He really powered the shows along whereas Gerry Conway struggled to keep up.

All these years, I have not much liked 'Broadsword' ( the song), which I always found bland, bombastic and sub-par till yesterday when I heard it on headphones during a bike ride and it revealed itself as an amazing first cousin of 'Seal Driver' from one side and 'Clasp' on the other, songs in my Tull top 15 (Seal Driver) and 25 (Clasp). Silly me. Of course, sudden appreciation of historical Tull while in early days of new Tull on palate, is a known phenomena.

The 1969 single Living in the Past, got me into Tull when I was 14 and still at school, then saw them on the Brick tour 72/73 and never looked back. Broadsword and the Beast is one of my fav albums.

I could never describe Broadsword as "bland"..with that pulsing riff, and the amazing Keyboard/guitar solo in the middle... Not to mention the great vocal and the cool lyric Glad you've came to your senses mate

Now THIS I can get excited about. Broadsword is one of my most favourite tracks and, along with Songs From the Wood, was my first introduction to Tull. It wasn't until I bought the CD that I realised Broadsword wasn't the first track which confused me greatly. I just love the build up, the pulsing, brooding sense of dread. It still gives me goosebumps. I was very much into Lord of the Rings and all things Arthurian (well, I still am, if I'm honest) so it was a perfect background to those. In addition, my then boyfriend who owned the LPs, took a dislike to one of his flatmate's girlfriends, so would play Beastie whenever she arrived. So childish

When I used to play the remaster with bonus tracks I always wish I could remix it. This was 20 years ago. This is the one I’ve been waiting for. I wonder if Wilson would have done A and Broadsword if there was no covid. Lucky for us it gave him time. With a 2 year gap until Under Wraps let’s hope he continues.

Amazing vibe on this record. Jethro Tull were always a big influence on me and had a lot to do with my learning classical music. I think this is one of their best and went unfairly unnoticed."

So shocked was I to read that steelmonkey found Broadsword "bland" (you've clearly not been playing it loud enough - it needs to be at least at 12!) that I've had to self-medicate by ordering this T-shirt I hope it helps quell the feeling of trauma Attachments:
