Songs From The Wood is my all time favourite Jethro Tull album, closely followed by Thick As A Brick! One can almost smell the fresh scent of newly mown hay emanating from the speakers as these songs unfurl to the wind. When an album such as this keeps its mystery throughout your entire life, you know there is a magical quality to it. It truly is a 'timeless' album. Absolutely marvellous. My most played Jethro Tull album. I wish I had one of these posters. Did initial copies of the album actually include a poster? Anyone?

I don't think there was a poster.

This is my favorite JT album by some distance. Stand Up and Aqualung place and show, but they’re several furlongs behind (maybe I should’ve saved these metaphors for a review of Heavy Horses!). The songwriting is just so GOOD, not a weak moment IMO.
It sounds like a (relatively) sober Pogues at their very best. That’s a compliment in case you were wondering.
SFTW is a masterpiece. Full stop.

The first Tull album I bought on the day of release. And from that day to this, I've been stunned at its vision, verve and execution. An absolute masterpiece from start to finish - and one that's never been given the wider recognition it deserved. Tull were also better than any other band at giving individual albums a feel and a character all of their own. There's even clear water (in my view) between SFTW and Heavy Horses - you couldn't actually swap tracks between the two without disrupting or diluting the overall flow/mood of either - and that distinctiveness is the mark of genius. Agreed. HH is in my JT top 5 and is nearly as good as SFTW.

Agreed. HH is in my JT top 5 and is nearly as good as SFTW. SFTW is indeed a masterpiece. Each song is an adventure , and even after all this time I can notice a little musical detail that thrills the soul. Its an album somehow full of the joy of feeling alive when nature is in bloom. ("Solstice Bells" doesn't quite fit the "Summer" imagery, but still, its a great song ) I've told this before, but my Tull fanaticism was at its height at the time (aged 20). I took a day off work to buy the album on day of release . Frustratingly ,my nearest record store didn't have it. A phone call established that a store further away had just taken delivery, a 50 mile or so round trip. This was Winter (February I think) everything was frozen and blowing a blizzard. All I had was my motorcycle but I couldn't stop myself. So part of my personal memory of this album is being very, very cold with frozen fingers! (Should have been the "Stormwatch" album shouldn't it?) I love most of Heavy Horses too, but for me that album is let down slightly by "Mouse police" which I think lacks melody, and likewise "No Lullaby" which I have never been able to like, outstays its welcome ,and slows the album down . In answer to an earlier query, the book that apparently inspired this album is the Reader's Digest book, "Folklore Myths & Legends Of Britain", worth tracking down a copy, a treat in itself, even without the Tull connection.

SFTW was the first Tull album I heard - and remains my favourite. Every song is a joy. I see it as representing all the seasons, so I'm happy Solstice Bells is there (and a much better version than on The Christmas Album). Jack in the Green is also quite wintry, with references to holly berries and snowdrops, but with the promise of spring and summer. There isn't a single song I don't love.

Check out the poster that Maddog posted last March. Okay, Germany is not exactly Canada or Brazil but there are still hundreds of kilometers between many of the cities so whether by train, short flights or bus and with different rooms every night, sound checks, the whole production of touring, maybe a little promotion here and there...8 nights in a row reminds us that TULL WERE MONSTERS. It was a long set, too.

Too bad Aces wasn’t on the original release. IMO it was the best track recorded in these secessions. Cup of Wonder, Hunting Girl, Velvet Green and Whistler are great, SFTW and Pibroch very good but am less impressed with the others. The album is great by most standards but still a tad overrated as HH was better. The concerts were to die for.

Its always interesting to read someone else's opinion, especially on here with fellow Tull fans who know their stuff. Funnily enough I have always been convinced that especially at the time SFTW was very underrated, not only by the music press, ("Jethro Tull play Steeleye Span" ), but I also remember people I attended concerts with at the time saying things like " not sure about this folky stuff". As said before, I rate this album highly because (for me ) there is no filler the whole thing just flows, whereas HH just falls short of that. Luckily, we have both!

High standard Tull afficianado (spellcheck) club here. Not for the 'which one is Jet?' set. SFTW was like a whole other Tull universe unfolding.

I found by accident, a seller on Ebay (InnerSleeve Music) selling the SFTW box set for $53.30 They are located in North Carolina and have more than 10 copies available. I missed out the first time and I had not seen the set selling for less than $300-$400. I hope anyone who missed out the first time will get it (for Christmas, maybe?)

Steelmonkey very kindly sent his SFTW box set to little old me in the UK (I am forever in his debt) but appears to be on sale for £28 - am quite tempted to buy a reserve copy I've just ordered the Aqualung CD with DVD for £23- I'm not yet sure whether it contains a "book" but the track list looks very interesting. Also, The Minstrel in the Gallery (40th Anniversary La Grande Edition) is for sale on Amazon for £36. They seem to have slipped these out under the radar, or they fell of the back of a Jethro Tull tour lorry . . . Am still on the look out for A Passion Play anniversary cut - they're still selling for obscene prices on eBay - if they ever come up

I was on a 3 hour drive home yesterday. Having played The Zealot Gene and Rokflote on the way there, it was time for SFTW on the way home. Good job the roof wasn't down as I was having a good old sing along (despite having the voice of a braying donkey) My first JT album, and still my favourite

If I'm not mistaken, the very first Tull music video was for "The Whistler" in 1977. And this was 4 or 5 years before MTV launched.
